I've been skimming threw some of the player stats for insperation and to calc damage and so on, and i came across in their some people whos cards at the bottom read private, I take that means only they can use it right?

Correct, private cards are exclusive to that Navi only.

So what about other cards that are not marked private, but I don't see a price on them or them in a shop anywhere? can we get/earn/buy them?
