It was good to see Joker recovered quickly, even cracking a small smile as Joker cracked his joke and chuckled.
"Your resilience is nothing to scoff at. I am glad to see you are alright."
As Joker tapped his generator, he couldn't hep but nod, admitting that it was quite the ability that Joker had.
Turning to face Grom, he replied to his remarks.
"To each their own belief on the subject. I didn't just mean physically, either. As one of your... position, remnants of your thoughts and what you stand for shall echo forward, too."
He was quiet for a moment.
"Just as Joker is learning and surpassing his programming, I have my own goals to leave behind in the future too."
He spoke softer this time. He turned to look at Joker as he finished, somewhat a sense of pride in his companion.
But the sudden change in Joker's demeanor was surprising.
"Joker? What's ---"
His face registered confusion before Joker's large hand shoved him back to the side, putting himself between him and Grom.
He quickly regained his footing after a couple of steps, suddenly sharpening his guard, and assessing the situation.
He listened intently as Joker spoke, his mind considering the words that were said. It was then when he made a connection.
Grom knew about the Apollo Flame. Considering that the name of this... "game" was collecting titans. But it was more to it than that... Grom's words finally clicked. He had a thing against beings with exceptional skills and abilities.
He furrowed his brow for a moment at Grom's response to Joker's words.
"Three questions. What exactly do the NIA stand, believe and fight for? You say that you know that your actions will run against ours, but how do you know even what ours are? Lastly, when I first spoke to you, you said that you "knew all about me." What exactly do you think you know?"
His posture remained neutral, but he held up his guard. He couldn't help but snort at his next retort.
"I have no doubt I'll run into Forte again, unfortunately. It is indeed likely that I will die, too. But at least I know I won't go down like last time... without a fight."

So Merrill was considering the memorial that would be left after one's end instead. One way or another it would echo regardless given what he was going for. No one would bother forgetting him as it was difficult to do so for those that would have caused such an upheaval. But it was for him hold his own beliefs on that. Grom wasn't someone who was trying to have that echo forward. It would be better if he was forgotten with the rest of them. And when Merrill finished, he would respond just the same.
"You have been following this group and fighting your enemies all this time, but what have your solutions been to those enemies? If you pay attention to those around you, it would be that their answer was gathering strength. Strength that has time and again become the benefit of someone else. Even if that isn't your desire, you are surrounded by people who will always seek out power that will continue to break the world around them."
They would argue that one day it would not be the same result. But how much of the world would they need to destroy before they were satisfied with success? The definition of madness was repeating a result and expecting a different outcome. Because they could only repeat that result, they were locked into a loop of madness that they were forced to repeat. And try as they may to grow beyond that with learning, how much would need to be dust before that lesson was learned?
"What the NIA stood for, though past tense doesn't even work given what occurred just now, is rectifying that continued problem. A problem that everyone else continues to perpetuate. Their need to prove themselves and test themselves become the ruin to those who fail to meet those power checks. The desire to pursue those goals and remain unbidden leads to that need for power. Still, the world we live in is just a step removed from the judgment that will be coming. It's basically your instincts as it is."

He had to admit that strength indeed played a role in all of this. Unfortunately those that sought power often lost sight of their original goal, too. But there was more to it than that. Lalonia had seen to that, no, proven that more than once already in the short time that they had all been together as a group. She de-escalated two situations that could have easily turned into the shedding of blood.
"And yet, Say you remove the benefits of strength, what becomes a measuring force? Beings of all kinds wonder what it is to be tested against one another."
But that wasn't all there was to it.
But Grom wasn't wrong that the cycle of power kept repeating itself. People from all over had their need to test themselves. Even himself.
"While yes, people gather strength and band together to survive. Sure, "Survival of the fittest" is one major belief that is employed, that doesn't mean that it is the only belief of why one gathers strength. There will always be those that believe that strength is the only answer. But strength doesn't always have to be used to do harm...
... I am aware that all sorts of groups of people are gathering power."
He put his hand on his chin.
"That being said, say that you succeed at removing strength. How does that solve the problem? if strength is no longer a determining factor, what then? That doesn't answer how to stop people from hurting one another? How could you actually protect others, if no one, yourself included, had the strength to do so?"
He raised a finger, as if a lightbulb went off.
"Unless you suggest that the NIA had held the strength? But then what stops the group from abusing it, should they have it? What would stop any one person with strength from using it? What stops them from killing others endlessly, or because others are weak, just as Forte does?"
He paused for a moment, to let his questions hang in the air.
"I may not agree that power is unneeded, but we live in a world where possibilities are endless. Power that can be achieved is endless. Limitation of knowledge that can be acquired is also endless. What is there to say that if strength isn't a check, what becomes is? One of the other choices? Some other measure?"
He rubbed his temple.
"I can't say I have an answer. That much is true. Quite frankly, being the one on the outside looking in, I just asked out of curiosity. I am aware that other groups have banded together and exist, such as the ONB and WWW and the like, but I know little about them. But funnily enough, I am often threatened and attacked before I can learn."
He sighed. He looked around, his eyes resettling on Grom.
"We all have judgement to face, Grom. Including you and I. But, I'll take your comment as praise, I'm rather fond of my instincts..."
He crossed his arms, looking back between the two.

Ah, that was a logical conclusion to deduce from what he was after. If you removed the power it meant that you likely wanted it for yourself so that you could then use the power as you saw fit over others. Of course that would make him no different than everything he had spoken of thus far. But it was good that he wasn't taking his words at merely face value. At the very least he shouldn't be so easily deceived by others if he kept up that sort of nature.
"That's simple to answer. What if I succeeded at removing strength? Then no one would be holding power. Not the masses, not the destroyers, not the NIA. That is why I said I do not need an afterlife. You should understand the implications from there. And that is why we will stand opposite at the end of the day."
The strength to protect was equally unrequired in his case. But that was only if he truly understood what that meant. Now then... he had some work to do. These two would have to learn what they wanted to do themselves after. And who they were willing to work with in order to do so.
"Let your instincts lead you then. I'll let history lead me. And if you survive the reckoning that comes to bring about the end of this perpetual problem, then you can say that your answer was correct."
With that he would beam out, leaving them in the ruins of what was. And what they could do with what they were left with.

Joker had much to say, but took a step back, and allowed Merrill to talk for a moment. Seeing his perspective, and how he handled basically being informed of his impending doom, was something of a lesson for Joker to learn from. Despite the clarity in Grom's statement, how sure he was in saying it, Merrill didn't seem all too phased by it.
The age old debate of power begets power, and demands more power to deal with it, sprung up, then. And if you were to decide who holds the power, how would you do that, and to what ends? Joker was by no means an expert on this philosophy, but he understood enough to follow when Merrill began asking the questions that this train of thought eventually lead to and broke down at, to which Grom, for his credit, didn't back down from.
Grom's answers were . . . telling. Joker narrowed his gaze as he considered his words, Grom hinting time and again that his true alignment wouldn't be discernible if they didn't understand the true depth of his choice of words.
It was a game of gathering titans, and as they gathered titans, it made it easier for the enemies to find them. But if they did not, was their option, then, to simply bow down and accept defeat where it was given to them? If they did nothing, if they sought for no answer to the power that rose against them, then they still lost. To fight against something, even if it was in vain, was a fight worth fighting. Even when his own survival was never assured, to simply stop pushing forward as though it were already lost . . . that mentality ensured that all efforts were pointless.
In a way, Grom had already given in to that ultimatum, but, with the nail in the coffin of his final words, Joker's analytics confirmed that he had taken it even a step further.
". . . You want to destroy it. The only way to completely invalidate power is to ensure that there is no one to hold power, and that there is no one to lord power over.
"A desolate land knows no rulers, and no slaves. That's your answer to this?" Even as the answer escaped him, Joker couldn't believe the analysis. The last time he had doubted his own analyses, however, he had lost his Crimson Satellite rather fantastically. No . . . he was right, this time.
Grom was mad.

Merrill listened to Grom's response, nodding at a couple of points, accepting that there was a very good chance that at the end of the day that they would be standing against one another. Merrill muttered softly to himself, putting more pieces together for himself, especially as Joker spoke out.
"The biggest difference being, that there are those who wish to exist, regardless of your beliefs. I suppose that in a way, this comes down to a couple of factors..."
"Even as all beings meet their end, to willfully chose a destructive path to end all life... That's not how I wish to deal with souls..."
"To end all life as we know it... But to what end? To have someone else restart? Even should he believe not in an afterlife of some or any kind... That it should all just... End? That is a scary thought, indeed..."
Merrill said nothing as Grom finished his thoughts and beamed out. He stepped forward, arms behind his back as he walked back up to Joker.
"Well, that was enlightening, to say the least. It is unfortunate he chose to leave now though. I did have a couple of other questions. He gave us some answers, but in his wake left just as many questions."
He couldn't help but wonder for a moment, looking towards the sky.
"I cannot say I fully understand why or how he came to such a conclusion, or what lead him to it. I cannot imagine what his existence entailed, nor did I get a chance to ask. It seems that he has made up his mind, and that's fine."
He sighed, placing a hand to his temple.
"As is, there are multiple different factions at play, and we are lucky that we have survived the recent encounters, especially Forte. I am sorry that you were targeted so. At least we have learned where those two stand in all this, for now. While we may disagree on how things should be, he isn't wrong that the past has been bloody, over and over. We have no perfect beings with perfect answers. We may never actually find the peace we so desire, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try."
He shrugged.
"It doesn't mean we all deserve to be judged just for existing. But that is what I think. But I also think that people, humans, navis, wave beings, whatever beings... Can all learn and grow. That violence does not always need to be the answer."
He raised a finger.
"But I also think there is several other things that we can take away. For example, yes, power is acquired, and used and in many cases, even abused. "Absolute power corrupts, absolutely." But, not everyone wants power to rule, or to impose on others. But, I cannot deny that there are those out there that get a thrill from battling and fighting one another. Some take joy in the carnage, others in killing or with the intent of killing. That being said, there are those who desire desire power, in all sorts of various forms, for other purposes. Including those who just want the ability to protect others... For those who cannot protect themselves."
He then hovered up, closer so that way his head was closer to Joker's.
"But what I can say that sparring or fighting seriously... There is some enjoyment of the unknown. To test yourself against another in combat... To take your words from earlier, IF there was a way for us to go all out, against each other, without causing damage to the worlds around us, and with no repercussions, I cannot deny that thought... would be exiting... and fun"
He cracked a small smile.

Not all was as it would seem. They had a tragedy this day in managing to field test the likes of such a weapon, but a strangeness was in the air. It gave a feeling that it was foreign, alien in nature and all around them. But it wouldn't be long before the root of it all became apparent, as at last from the crater that remained was there something rising up. It was distinctly some kind of rift, a vortex of some kind that was swirling in place. Nothing appeared to be happening from its presence here and even the alien feeling that once permeated the air had vanished, leaving it as an unsolved mystery now.

They would not get direct confirmation of their conclusion to Grom's implications. Beaming out, they left them alone with nothing but their thoughts. While his own mind raced, Merrill turned away from it and began looking back at it all, commenting in a way that confused Joker. Was he not concerned about Grom's decision? Surely, such a blatant threat to all life should be contended with, shouldn't it?
It seemed that Merrill was content with allowing what was to be, however. Like he knew this information, and was building upon what he already had, but was not set to act on it, yet. Joker kind of equated this to not quite executing a query just because he had new data, but rather waiting until the data was more refined before executing it. Was that the difference in Merrill's way of thinking and his? He took the information he had and immediately acted on it, as opposed to seeing it from multiple perspectives, first?
While his face was still stern, Joker allowed himself to calm down from his frenzied thoughts, and considered Merrill's words more carefully. It was a small victory to still be standing after all of this, he supposed. That was one way to look at it. Based on his next comments, Merrill went so far to as admit that he didn't quite judge Grom. Grom saw the information at his disposal, and he made a decision, based on it, as well. The past was a bloody debacle . . . as was once said to him, though, just because the viewpoint could be rationalized, did that excuse it, or remise it from its consequences? Sure, Joker didn't have the answers, either, but was this an appropriate response, even given his own inclination?
The Crimson Titan listened carefully to the next bit . . . about violence not always being the answer. That all could learn to grow. He was trying to apply that same logic to his own life, even now, but it still seemed that it was always simpler, easier, to fall back into what he knew how to do, and what he was good at. His exposition on the nature of 'absolute power' was a telling maxim, and the additional applications of power were insightful, as well. What he had tried chasing after power for . . . the power that Merrill displayed, that encouraged him to fight onward, and raised his combat prowess, was the power necessary to protect others. To not only ensure his own survival, but to protect those alongside him . . . it was still something he was coming to terms with, but he could see the nobility behind that stance.
He closed his eyes a moment and just huffed out air. ". . . A noble consideration, assuredly. All living things understand the simple pretenses of survival, however . . . my natural instinct is to fight. For that reason, when I am met with a challenge I cannot overcome, my programming only knows the response necessary to meet the need to overcome that challenge. So often has it been a power gap, or at least most easily solved by the acquisition of more power, that it has become second nature to presume its necessity. Given the choice between meting out annihilation or succumbing to it myself, the option I would choose is far too easy to foresee."
He managed to get his statement out before Merrill lifted himself eye to eye with Joker, and Joker met his gaze with stoic resolve as Merrill inadvertently gave unto him a challenge. His perpetual scowl rose up into a smirk at the thought, and Joker raised his hands and cracked his knuckles against his palm. There was one thing he understood, and it was battle, and even with how much he was pushing past his programming, he couldn't deny that it was still within his design to test his mettle and improve against any potential adversary.
". . . There is surely no danger to that right here," Joker said slowly. "The world has already been rent apart . . . whatever else remains, we ourselves would not be able to destroy," he answered, his excitement evident in the fire that burned behind his eyes, and the coiling energy that even now began to roll off of him.
Before anything more could become of their shared interest, however, Joker felt that alien presence and turned. Watching as something swirled into a strange vortex, he immediately recalled the strange, unwelcome and unnatural presence at the top of the Sky Tower, and the rift that led into the lair of the Cybeast from before. Turning away from Merrill and towards the rift, Joker considered it, and then turned to look back at Merrill.
"That . . . it is like the rift atop the Sky Tower. It feels just the same, and was formed at a place like this. You remember my report of the incredible combat energy displayed atop the Sky Tower, leading us to that rift? While not direct combat, the incredible energy unleashed by the Reality Core's explosion . . . I gather it created this rift, alongside the lives it decimated in the process," he quipped, considering the connections and easily seeing them. ". . . The others are occupied, and the last we encountered such a thing, what was inside was of great importance. Should we press on and investigate, you and I, or wait for others to join us?"

Merrill listened as Joker began speaking. He listened, still floating, hands behind his back.
"Your natural instincts are good. And right now, unfortunately, it seems that the factions at play want to gather power..."
He nodded as he followed, agreeing with a couple points and responding quickly as they looked at each other, a small laugh escaping his lips.
" And you continue to evolve beyond your programming. Even as we speak. I must admit, I cannot deny that a part of me enjoys the fight... Not something I want to admit, but still. It is a thrill. For some, their emotions are connected to fighting. In addition, I will also agree, that I don't plan on rolling over in the face of annihilation."
As the waves of energy rolled off Joker, his own eyes reacted, a part of him wanting to issue a challenge.
"Hahaha! I knew it! You do enjoy the fight! You admitted it!"
That tone from Death snapped Merrill out of it. He took a deep breath, calming himself, and returning to his thoughts, he continued.
"While I can't disagree this place would be a good place to battle, we both know that right now, as is, if we made a mistake and one of us were to die by a mistake or otherwise, that would be bad..."
As he spoke, his mind suddenly had a thought.
"It is also possible someone cold waltz into this area by accident and get caught in the crossfire, in which we may accidently hurt or kill them...""
And that's when a separate thought popped into his mind. Just like when he was in Netopia. He was minding his own business when he stumbled on that sword, and then everything turned into a crap show that he got caught up in, and having Rosso beat the crap out of him, nearly rupturing his crystal and killing him, forcing Death to intervene.
"Joker, When we were fighting Sirius... Was that power the same that caused that explosion? Because..."
But his thought was cut off by the strange feeling permeated with the air and the appearance of the vortex. Although the strange feelings dissipated, Joker spoke. While his logic held up, Merrill had doubts.
"Do you think that the two of us could face what is on the other side? Last time, we have 5, two more attackers, and a healer with us... While I can alternate between attacking and supporting duties..."
His brow furrowed thoughtfully as he waited on Joker's response.

Joker considered Merrill's attempts at giving him credit for his work so far, and the elemental swordsman's agreement to his own opinion, but he found himself unwanting to be comforted in this particular opinion.
Merrill was quite right, concerning all of the concerns about this place as their field of battle. With their new concern, however, the opportunity for combat was behind them, anyhow. Instead, they were faced with the decision of whether or not they could contend with whatever was on the other side. Joker considered his new state, how much power he felt he had lost in that one exchange, and how little strength he possessed, now, in comparison. His systems had adapted quite a bit in that small span of time, and he could feel his generator working more than it had before, as if it were on its own legs rather than functioning off of his other sources.
Their abilities were nothing to scoff at, assuredly, and Joker could also maintain himself for some time if necessary. "With the importance of the others' tasks, it would be folly to wait for them. We would have to proceed with caution, but depending on the strength of what may lie on the other side, so long as we do not act too hastily, the opportunity to escape should it become too difficult, or to overcome it with careful analysis of its capabilities, should not be too troublesome." He paused and turned towards Merrill, raising an eye brow at him. "What say you? The Crimson Titan and the Elemental Swordsman, to depths unknown, together?"

Merrill started with a nod. With things the way they were, the others were busy, and it might take away from their tasks by having to contact them and wait.
"This is true. Plus, now that I think about it, it is possible that we may lose the opportunity if we wait around. Or, as an example, we risk other factions finding whatever is inside. Which if it is a Cybeast or something similar, we do not want our enemies to capture, abuse or receive."
He looked up, matching Joker's gaze as he eyed him. His small chuckle returned at the title he was given.
"I have a long way to go to earn that title, as far as that goes. I have a lot of work to do to master these very elements. But I agree that a cautious approach should be taken as we do this."
He was glad they agreed and had a plan.
"As much as I have questions, and wanted to ask about your past, I suppose we we shouldn't delay further then. So, Crimson Titan, to the depths unknown!"
He turned, and began levitating towards the portal...

#s://i~imgur~com/dk4CQm0~png Standing in the remains of NIA's obliteration, one figure approaches another near the edge of the crater.
" ... "
" Not that I didn't believe you at first, but this at least confirms NIA's lack of involvement in the Cyber World's destruction. "
The incident with Sirius had been resolved the day prior, roughly twelve hours preceding their current scene; the Cyber World's annihilation being just as fresh on the mind.
" NIA's digital structures are more sound than you think. This place survived that destruction, I was just here last night. What this should confirm for you is that NIA is a threat to those that were responsible for everything going on. "
She was still unaware of what actually happened: Eon's power being unwillingly released from Joker and consuming this network entirely. From her vantage point, this was just a catastrophic attack that happened so quickly that she hadn't even been alerted of it.
" ... "
"Or you can go on and keep thinking we're the bad guys, if you could overlook the fact that they went out of their way to eliminate this place."
Warrior could hear the frustration in her voice, and he couldn't blame her for being upset about these circumstances. For someone with as much national pride as her, it was unforgivable to see the headquarters of her nation's esteemed defenders in ruins over night.
Feint, meanwhile, was starting to figure out why he was even here.
" I doubt you've come to pay your respects. "
Warrior and Feint had just returned to the Cyber World after a day's rest, coming right off of a less-than-pleasant discussion with their good friend, Faith Nymphra. Cherish left the conversation early, while Jake was implored to cease involvement with the world events at large and to remove Cherish from them, if he was able to.
" Of course not. Faith's concerned -- she's wanting us to stand down from all of this. "
Feint snarled and rolled her eyes at the sound of that. It was just as she suspected.
" And her word is law. So what? You're going to drag me back, kicking and screaming? "
" ... No. "
" ? "
Feint's expression didn't change, but that was certainly out of character for Warrior. She'd remain silent, letting him explain himself for going against Faith's requests for the first time since she'd known them.
" She's suspicious of NIA, but she hasn't seen our side of things. I think she's misplacing her judgement. "
NIA was directly involved with the confrontation of Sirius; the other major factions were nowhere to be seen. That was true for most of the recent events: ONB and Creamland's Knights seemed hardly present at all, but NIA was at every turn, actively working to mitigate emerging threats. He'd have believed that it was an elaborate hoax if not for their own base being seemingly targeted as well.
" Well it's about time you learned to think for yourself. "
" I'll allow that because I understand you're in an unpleasant mood, and rightfully so. But spare me the rest of your attitude and let's work toward a solution: I'll hear what you know about ongoing events and I'll share what I know. "
" Classified. I'll do nothing of the sort. "
Warrior's patience could last a bit longer, but he showed some aggravation at her usual non-compliance.
" Absurd. I've no interest in sabotaging NIA and you know that. "
" Doesn't matter. Your intents mean nothing to and speak nothing of Gigamerica's intents. Anything I tell you, you'll turn around and tell them, and there's no evidence of their hands being clean of all this. "
" Isn't it a bit hypocritical for the nationalist to tell me to disavow my country? "
" I'm avid about my nation. I don't give two s***s about yours. "
" Well it isn't happening. If you don't want help, then fine: let's admire where you and NIA have ended up without it. "
" Why you... "
And so their bantering would continue for a time, as was the norm between these two. In the meantime, they remained oblivious to the vortex still swirling at the center of the crater.

Hollow.___
The only sign of his coming was that the air grew a little darker, as if light fleeted away, a void into the unknown forming as its master rose out of it. Hollow had fought alongside Warrior and against Feint once before, so he recognized both of these signatures as he ascended.
The access into the Undimension closed underneath him, finding himself thankful that a small pocket of it remained that he could move through, although he figured it wasn't for much longer. Its existence was reliant on his existence, and vice-versa . . . Hollow shook his head, pulling him from that thought, turning his attention to the two that were bickering with one another.
Such heated comments they were throwing at one another, and, yet, neither of them ever drew their weapon at the other. They were furious with each other, and yet they knew where that line was drawn. Were the two truly so upset, or was there something deeper, more difficult to discuss than the anger between them? For his own inability to process them, he had an interesting view of emotions. He found himself baffled by their use of such things if they would just use one to hide another.
He allowed it to continue until Feint had made the last ugly comment, as he knew she preferred to get the last word in, before he finally interjected. "Warrior. Xion requests that you rendezvous with us." Hollow turned to look at Feint, this only being his third time meeting with this woman, his form still a vacuum within the net from which no power whatsoever could be read, as though he wasn't there at all, or was designed from something that was intentionally unidentifiable. "Xion did not give me specifics of what to do in the event that you were present, Miss Feint. If you have intentions of assisting us against the threat that destroyed large portions of the Cyber World, I am certain Xion would not object to your presence."
Curt and to the point as always, Hollow did not operate with subjective information or with things as limiting as his own opinions or thoughts. Efficiency was the only concern of his, and if she was willing to help, and would do so amicably, then an ally was an ally, no matter how sour her mood.
"Once I have Warrior, I intend to search for Merrill and Joker. Further information on their whereabouts will be maintained 'classified,' as it were, until after your decision to assist us is made clear, Miss Feint."
