Just yesterday, Bob and I were having a discussion in regards to the way that things are going in-story. We managed to come to conclusions, some temporary and some more long-term, in regards to many of the issues that we talked about, but one of his ideas struck a chord with some of our older systems. Namely bonuses available for RP.
To that end, I am proposing the return of the story bonus system, for lack of a better term at the moment. Here's what it would entail;
A set of trusted members would be considered "MMM Employees". Yes, just like the bank. These members will be allowed to reward other players based on their performance in story. For example; if one or more Navis are in an area and show exceptional RP performance in a given situation, then a MMM employee would be able to post a reward of a few EXP and/or Zenny. This wouldn't be an absolute system, but rather something that each employee would be able to give out a handful of times in a given period. In return, we will likely give the employees compensation for their own work, be it in the form of a small salary or a crest similar to the old bank crest.
However, the job wouldn't have to stop here. If the system works out well, we could continue even farther. For example; the return of the mystery data systems, random virus encounters (when the system is complete), and any other number of tidbits and fun things. However, instead of posting "A mystery data just appeared" like we used to do, Navis would have to actively search out rewards in a given area, and hopefully get a response from an employee.
This is just the first vision of this system. What do you think? Would you like to see this implemented in-story? What other features do you think we could do with this? Do you feel that this would be asking too much of those who are given the position, and what form of compensation would you feel is fair?
I already gave my two cents on this earlier, but some more things to add:
I think its a great idea and should be added, But we'd need a metric for handing out these rewards. Just something to stop people from being overly generous and handing out half versions every situation. Maybe just a small cap.
Shot in the dark... Cap at like 150 exp/3000z or so. I dunno, that might be too high. Seems like a decent cap to give a sizable bonus to exceptional RP, and anywhere between 0 and that amount can be given (in any combination of exp or zenny) depending on how well the employee thinks they did.
Secondly I think before compensation can set in we should maybe have a trial period. Something like a week where an employee does the work without compensation, then they prove they can handle the system well, at which point they start to receive their compensation.
Re-make for the new system, we're probably going to make them similar to their original form, but adapted to the system a bit better and more of an actual option over "you're weaker if you don't use at least one".
EDIT: You make a fine point, Colin. But this also brought up an interesting new metric to the idea; fairness. Do we simply give the judges free-reign for their ability to chose who gets what, or have it so that there are a guidelines of the circumstances under which a bonus can be given?
Some minor guidelines but nothing too strict, else we have situations where people need to check with others to be sure its good. Post quality is certainly massively subjective, so is necessary length. Number of posts in a section (per person) would be a good metric to run by. Aside from that, there's not a lot that isn't incredibly subjective.
I really like this idea, B.o.B. and I have already talked a little bit about it, it's cool to see consideration for it being implemented.
Phen brings up all the points I might have made but to play devil's advocate I say we implement it with minor guidelines and see how it plays out. If we had the right people doing the job I could see it being a fair, self regulating system quite easily.
That and the system as a whole would add incentive to quality of RP growing, making veterans and newbies both strive to grow and learn. I'm quite sure most if not all of us do this already, but this is in a sense a form of concrete feedback for RP not present outside RP battles
I'm glad to see I was able to spark up more discussion about this topic. I think a good way to keep a fair judgement on rewards is the buddy system. What I mean is: - a Story Teller(working title) will designate a point in which they believe a particularly good bit of RP in story has begun and also designate a point in which they feel the a conflict or particularly good interaction had ended. - Based on the number of posts in between lets say a max of 10 post chunks to start out with. The story teller will give out a set amount of exp to be determined later along with any karma +/- - they then post up these details in the story thread and then tag another story tell. -Another story teller comes in and yays or nays it, if both agree it deserves reward but not on the amount the values are averaged and then rewards given
This seems fine to me as an early baseline, obviously raven gets the final say after all though. Though to reduce clutter, we should consider a separate board for these story tellers to post links to the "stories" and for others to agree/disagree. At least a separate thread, with another one where rewards are posted. Makes it easier to follow I think.
Assignments of these roles can be done if we decide to implement it and we'll likely have a talk with a number of staff+few others to determine who these people should be. We don't want too many, but enough that we can have at least 2 active regularly. So i think 3-4 people is a good number to shoot for.
The problem with that is if the chunk is in the middle of a currently ongoing RP (say you have two groups in the same area, and you only nominate one group which ended, while the other is still going on) you'd have to find a way to insert a post between other posts. which as far as im aware isnt doable outside of deleting and remaking some posts.
The Tagging system is seeing more use by a few people, and it shows up in notifications easily, so we can use that to alert people to their rewards, it also allows them to all be in one place, for tracking purposes.
This is already a thing. RP staff are supposed to do this with Karma, Mystery Data, or some other perk. There was even a thread for it in the 'Players Stats' board that Warrior dumped into an older board when he made 6.0 a thing.
