I. Roleplaying Overview
Roleplay is an integral part of the MMM experience. The MMM takes place in the MegaMan Battle Network timeline, roughly 2 centuries past the events of the series: This is a land where the Internet and AI technologies have developed to the point of being an entire digital world outside of our own "Real" world, complete with Net Navigators ("Navis"): Web-surfing avatars so complex and intelligent that seem like they have (and occasionally DO have) souls!
MMM roleplay is Player-character based and collaborative. The story mode itself is thread based, with a topic describing it here.
One important note about our RP system is that progression is very important not just for the overall plot, but for individual characters as well. Development and refinement of a character's behavior, relationships, and personality is encouraged. This also means that you shouldn't expect to join and immediately become an all-powerful hero who drives the plot. Your navi's power in story mode is determined by version, not how you describe them in your writing.
Particularly good roleplay may be rewarded from time to time with special bonuses from site or RP staff. This does not necessarily mean you need to change the course of the plot, defeat a powerful enemy, or have a character that is "epic". You will be rewarded based on characterization, emotion, adaptability, and various other criteria.
Character interaction is also of the utmost importance. As previously stated, RP here is collaborative. To overcome the greatest challenges in story mode, you will almost always need help from other navis and forum members. That doesn't mean your navi needs to make friends with everyone, nor do you need to involve yourself in the current story arc - interesting relationships with other characters can earn kudos - but ignoring others while trying to "do your own thing" throughout the main story mode will often be difficult.
The most important aspect of RP is simple: Don't be afraid to learn as you go or ask for help! We grow along with our characters, and with practice and feedback, you can dramatically improve your RP prowess. Don't be too discouraged as you're trying to learn the ropes. If you want pointers, ask an RP staffer or a member you trust!
Last but not least, have fun!

II. Necessary RP Information
Although it is possible to focus solely on stat-based battles, you will need RP approval to participate in any RP-based section of the site. There are several sections of your profile necessary for this approval:
- Name: Quite simply, the name of your navi. You may add a file extension such as .exe if you wish, but it is not required. The name of your navi can not be vulgar, and it can not be the same name as another Navi on the site, and cannot share a name/design with an official character (from Capcom or otherwise!) without permission!
- Operator: The name of the human who operates your Navi, if any. The name of your Operator can not be vulgar, and it can not be the same name as another Operator on the site OR an official character. An operator is not required - if your Navi does not have one, simply put "None" in this section.
- Faction: Any official MMM faction that your navi is a member of, and their rank within it. When first creating your profile, this section will almost always be blank; joining a faction requires permission from its leader and involves story-mode interaction.
- Appearance: What your navi looks like. Creative designs are always much-appreciated, but don't worry if you're no Da Vinci! Although pictures are accepted, a written description is necessary. This is in case the image is taken down or becomes otherwise unavailable. The written description doesn't need to detail every single aspect of the navi's appearance, but it should give the reader enough to envision the character in their minds without any major assumptions or gaps. You should not say "He/she looks like (Character) but with (Changes)" - this does not suffice as a full description.
Images posted do not need to be drawn by you, but they should be of your character. Posting artwork of other characters (especially copyrighted ones) is frowned upon. Try to be original with your creations, and give credit where credit is due!
- Background: Some details about your Navi's life - how they were created, met their Operator (if they have one), and became who they are today. You don't need to write an entire memoir, but we should get some sense of where it is they're coming from as they're introduced to our story.
Also, please refrain from saying "he has amnesia/a dark secret past/classified history" and not elaborating on it. We've all seen it before and it's not impressive.
- Personality: Exactly what it sounds like. Describe your navi's personality - how they interact with others, what their general emotional state is, what kinds of quirks they might have. You don't need to cover every nuance (surprises and character development are fun), but it should serve as a decent introduction to your character.
III. RP Battles:
RP Battles are a counterpart to our stat battle system. You can earn EXP and Zenny while practicing your RP and getting feedback from judges - and having to do far less math than in a stat battle!
RP Battles, unlike stat battles, are not necessarily won by deleting the other player's navi. Instead, scores are based on RP ability, divided into five categories: Style, Articulation, Balance, Length, and Emotion.
There are a variety of options and settings for RP battles. For all the details, see this topic.

IV. General RP Rules
The most basic rule of RP is "don't be a dick". Trolling, godmodding, and power-playing will not be tolerated. If you constantly harass another player or their characters without in-story justification, you will be punished.
Please refrain from posting pornographic or excessively vulgar material. Posts with this objectionable content may be deleted by staff at their discretion. Do not post illegal content, as if that needs saying.
Be courteous and respectful to your fellow members. Aggression and even hatred in-character are fine, but if arguments, flame wars, or similar conflicts spill over into a real world context, please keep them off the site or at least confined to private messages. Failure to do so may be punished at the staff's discretion.
V. RP Power Rules
Version determines how powerful your navi is in RP. A v1 is very weak, without much ability to affect the environment. At higher versions, your attacks may become more powerful and you can wreak more havoc - or defend against said havoc more effectively. You will be expected to keep your version in mind at all times and avoid doing things your navi is not powerful enough for. Use common sense and look at what other navis of similar versions can do. If in doubt, ask an RP mod or admin! If you attempt to do things above your navi's version capabilities, you might be requested to change them or your posts will be deleted. Versions are an important factor in story battles. Although ingenuity and tactics do play a role, the outcome of a fight is usually determined by versions. When two navis of matching versions fight, the outcome is determined solely by RP. With a one-version gap, the higher-version navi generally has an advantage, but victory is not guaranteed. A two-version gap slants the odds more heavily in the favor of the higher-versioned navi, but they can still be overcome with exceptional technique. A three version gap is commonly the "cutoff point" where victory for the lower-versioned combatant becomes almost impossible - although they can still deal some decent damage in the battle.
With a six-version gap between combatants, the more powerful navi can delete their victim in one attack. If there is no one else in the topic to intercept the attack, than the attacker can include the deletion in his own post. If not, then RP proceeds as normal and it's up to the victim to react to the attack by posting their deletion - and you WILL be deleted in this case, no desperate super-avoiding - or someone else to intercept. If a victim delays posting out of a refusal to admit defeat, his deletion may be declared by a staff member at their discretion. However if you cannot defeat the navi in stats, you cannot perform this action. Staff Members can also perform this action regardless of version gap depending on the circumstances.
Intercepting attacks aimed at other navis that have not hit yet is possible. You simply take the damage and any associated effects yourself. For example, if a v9 navi attacks a v8 navi and you intercept with a v3, your navi will be deleted. If a v9 navi attacks a v3 and you intercept with a v8, you will only be moderately harmed. You must already be in the same area (topic) as the victim when an attack occurs in order to intercept it.
Groups fighting together have combined story-power in terms of the overall battle. The formula for this is as follows: Take the version of the strongest navi in the group and then add half the total versions of all other group members. As such, a group of one v10 and a v4 would have a combined story power of v12. If the result includes a fraction, round down. Instead of being v12.5, for example, a v10 and a v5 in a group together would still have a combined version of v12.
If a single navi that happens to be part of a group targets an attack at another single navi in the other group, however, their individual versions are used.
VI. Deletion & Logging Out
There are three manners of defeat, in Story Mode: A navi defeated in an RP battle can of course be spared, but will still have the injuries from the battle. These will take time to heal. If they are severely injured, or take a finishing blow, a navi can be deleted. Additionally, it can choose to avoid this fate by logging out before sustaining fatal damage. There is additionally a third form of deletion that occurs only in extreme circumstances:
- Delete: A navi defeated by an opponent in Story Mode is temporarily deleted. When a navi is deleted, its body shatters into pieces of code that fly off and away or fade from existence. This is accompanied by an audio message: "(Navi Name) Deleted". The bits of code are placed into a sort of "Recycle Bin" where they are reassembled as the navi waits to respawn. Deleted navis waiting to respawn CANNOT participate in Story Mode, but they can continue to participate in custom stories, RP battles, and non-story stat battles.
How long a deleted navi stays in this "Recycle Bin" depends on how many navis the forum user has. If the deleted navi is their only one, it can respawn the day after its deletion. For each additional RP-approved navi the member has, the respawn waiting time increases by one day until it reaches seven days total. No repsawn waiting time will ever exceed one week. Your navi may respawn anywhere on the net, unless they are prohibited from entering it for any reason.
- Log-out: A navi that wishes to avoid a confrontation or that realizes it is losing can choose to log out of a network to avoid deletion. This manifests in the disappearance of the navi in a flash of light and an audio message: "(Navi Name) Logging Out". A logged-out navi can resume posting in Story Mode immediately, but can not re-enter the network they were logged out from for as long as they would be unable to participate in Story Mode had they been deleted, as they will be unable to re-establish a connection there.
- Perma-Delete: In some cases, whether as punishment for rule-breaking or for story purposes, a navi may be "perma-deleted" by an admin or RP staff member. A perma-deleted navi's code is completely destroyed, and the navi can never respawn. The chances of your navi being perma-deleted are extremely low as long as you obey the rules.

VII. Modes, Forms, and Other Special Abilities
In Story Mode, temporary boosts in version can be afforded by certain abilities. DarkSouls and Hyper Modes you have in your stats both work in-story. Each lasts for as long as it would in a stat battle. The benefits of these forms are as follows:
[/b] +1 version, can use Hyper Attacks and other HM effects. DarkSoul: +2 versions, can use any other DS effects you have. Hyper Fusion: +3 versions, can use Hyper Attacks and other HF effects. Final Weapon: +5 versions[/ul] The requirements for activating any of these forms are the same as in stat battles. After using a Hyper Mode or DarkSoul in-story, you may not use it in-story again for 72 hours after it ends. After using a Hyper Fusion in-story, you may not use it in-story again for 144 hours after it ends. After using Final Weapon in story, you may not use it in-story again for 168 hours - a full 7-day week.Additionally, these forms can only be used once per battle - even if the battle lasts longer than the normal time limit for re-use outside of conditions that allow multiple activations. Using one of these forms in-story does not lock you from using them in non-story battles or custom stories; however, you may still only use them once per battle in RP battles (as is the case in stat battles). The normal time limit rules apply to custom stories. If you take fatal damage from a Mini-Boss (or more powerful) NPC or an opponent 6 or more versions higher than you, DarkSoul and Final Weapon will be bypassed and you will be deleted without being able to use them. Related notes that aren't exactly forms: Undershirts do not have any effect in RP, due to the accelerated pace. If your navi has an SE (Special Emulation) from another navi, they may use it in-RP and story mode only with the permission of the attack's creator. There is no waiting period for RP use of SEs. VIII. NPCs NPCs are characters portrayed by staff members or members specifically granted the responsibility by staff. Unlike normal navis, they may not have full profiles or even specific versions. They do, however, exist in levels of power: - A mini-boss is generally stronger than a normal navi, even one at a very high version. You will almost always need teamwork in order to defeat one. Mini-bosses are often found in story-mode as "generals" or other servants of a higher-level NPC. They are not to be trifled with lightly, as they can cause massive damage to characters and even affect locations with some ease.
- A boss is similar to the equivalent sort of character from a video game. It's ALWAYS more powerful than even the strongest normal navi and will require a group to defeat. A boss can, when left unattended, use their incredible power to heavily damage or even destroy entire areas or networks.
- A titan is the cream-of-the-crop; a being so powerful as to be godlike. It can crush even most groups of navis with little effort, and change or destroy just about anything or everything on the net. Overcoming a titan is a legendarily difficult accomplishment that requires extreme skill, strategy, cooperation, and even luck.
Quite often, battles in-story against NPCs will be stat-based. However, sometimes there will be RP battles against them. These usually function the same as normal in-story RP battles, using the power guidelines above. In some cases, there will be a specific goal or action that must be reached or performed in order to hurt or delete the NPC - much like a boss' weakness in a video game. You may not be informed of this in advance, so don't be too afraid to think outside of the box when battling an NPC! IX. Roleplay Rewards On occasion, members will be given rewards for outstanding role-play skill. These rewards will be posted within the RP topic that the role-play was made in within one week of the RP's posting, are generally a few EXP and/or Zenny, and will happen randomly. All staff members have the power to give out roleplay rewards, as well as a handful of normal members that are listed here.[/font][/div]
