Kajira said nothing, looking up into the monitor where her Operator sat, keying in various commands. Her face held a stony look, and she was watching him with eyes filled with pure anger. He was pondering re-writing her code to something else, which would, in turn, possibly re-write her memory again. "If you wipe my memory again, I swear..."
The young man on the other end glanced at her, looking up from his typing. That was a new one. She hadn't really said anything before when he'd told her he was going to reprogram her. Then again, he hadn't exactly told her that it'd come with a memory wipe either. "Look. I didn't know that the mind wipe was going to cause you that many headaches. I was just making sure your data didn't have any errors in it and the easiest way to do that was to just wipe it clean."
Kajira let out an irritated huff. She cocked her head to the side and watched as the man continued to type. "Well it wouldn't have been that big of a deal, but I forgot a few of the friends I'd made. And that wasn't very nice, Blake."
The man sighed, taking his hands from the keyboard and looking down at her. "All right, all right. I'm sorry. This next little bit I'll run more as an update so it'll just modify how you work rather than completely redesign you. That way you and your Navi pals can stay friends," he spoke, sounding less than enthused about having to do some more work. He had Kajira's bare program saved on his laptop, and it would be easier to introduce new concepts there, but now he was going to have to either buy or write a new script to adapt her abilities to emulate something else.
He blinked, the young man's eyes flickering over the data that Kajira was putting out. He keyed in a few lines of code, when an alert popped up on his screen. His eyes flickered over what it read before he minimized it, before looking back to Kajira, who was standing against the side of a building, somewhere in Electopia. "Hey Kaj; we got a disturbance over in Green Town. The ONB just got an alert that someone looking suspicious went into the forests near there. Might not be anything, but you should go take a look."
The woman sighed, pushing herself off of the building to a standing position. "All right, all right. I'm on it. A gust of wind rolled through the area, and the woman turned to dust, carried by the force of wind that she dictated with her essence. Moments later, the woman reassembled at the edge of the small village, looking less irritated. "All right Blake; run a search. Anything with power, let me know."
"Roger that," the man said as his fingers flew other the keys, diagrams of the area beginning to fill up his screen. Several sections vanished as the searches revealed nothing, until there wasn't much left but the village itself, and one navi in the forest. "Looks like we got ourselves a high-powered one out in the woods off to your right. Keep your guard up, Kaj,"
The woman smirked. "It's always up," she said before she darted into the forest, following Blake's direction on where the other navi was located. Even if they seemed to be out here for a stroll, the fact that the ONB had been alerted meant that whoever it was, they were probably armed. That or it was a paranoid navi who had contacted them. Either way, Kajira would get to the bottom of it.

As Kajira reached the entrance to the forest area, her initial dash slowed down to a walk, and finally tapered off to a full stop as she glanced at the trees around her. There was something off about the small clearing, and though her initial instincts said the trees, it took her a second to realize that wasn’t the problem.
”What do you see, Kaj? You’ve stopped moving, from what I can tell.” Her net-OP’s voice sounded a touch concerned, which was unusual. Apparently whatever this was, it was making him uneasy as well. ”Some kind of track or clue?”
The woman didn’t respond right away, instead kneeling down towards the grass. She knew that the grass was digital, merely a fabrication of this world that she lived in, that she was a part of. Yet the detail that had gone into making it was mind-blowing, and in that, it seemed to tell a story all its own.
”Kajira, I can’t see what you’re seeing. Not at the same level of detail anyway. If there’s something there, let me know so I can try to assist.” The man frowned as he watched his Navi knelt down in the grass. For all he knew, she could be petting a rabbit or trying to grow a sapling.
”It’s the grass. Her answer was simple, and didn’t hold any means of an actual explanation.
”…What? What do you mean, `It’s the grass`?” he asked, frustrating seeping into his voice.
Kajira glanced again at the blades of grass, wanting to be sure her guess was at least somewhat accurate before she spoke. Blake was smart, maybe he’d be able to make sense of it. ”The grass isn’t bent one way or another. It’s all over the place like someone was walking back and forth here a couple of times.” She had her own surmises as to what it could be, but she wanted to see what he thought, first.
There was a silence on the other end for a few seconds, before his sounds of thought broke through. ”Likely then, that whoever is out here is looking for something. And a suspicious person looking for something isn’t someone that we can take lightly. Be sure you’re prepared,” he spoke, and the woman gave a slight nod.
With that mystery solved, or at least somewhat nullified, Kajira moved forward, deeper into the forest. She’d never been to this area before, and while she had to admit the trees and whatnot were quite pretty, they didn’t really have a whole lot of substance to them. Sure, they were here, but there was a distinct lack of animals. And, while Kajira had never been outside of the Net, (obviously,) Blake had told her stories of the outside.
A forest on the outside would’ve had insects, mammals, and other species of life all co-existing in one small habitat. This, however, was a fairly crude mockery of the beauty of life that she was so fond of hearing about. She gave a slight frown as she glanced about the trees. She’d never really given that much thought, before.
Abruptly, she’d stopped, noticing another thing that was amiss. She was getting closer to her target, it seemed.
”Blake, run a quick scan of any deleted data in my vicinity, please.” Her request was met with keystrokes, a signature sound of Blake working. A few seconds later, a filter fell over her vision, and where there was now a jagged stump, there was a hazy tree, showing that it had been there at one point. The image itself was still fairly clear, however. This lent some credence to the train of thought Kajira was following, that this was a recent destruction.
”So that tree was demolished…looks like within the past five minutes or so. Whatever you’re tracking, it’s close, now.” The urgency in his voice was unusual. Normally, the two didn’t have any fear in what they were hunting, but by that same token, they usually knew what they were going after. This time, it was a complete wildcard, and the way it was acting was unusual.
It seemed to be hunting for something, though what it was, neither of them could say. It was traversing back and forth over the grass, and it had knocked over this tree. ”You think that whatever it was, it knocked the tree over in frustration over not being able to find whatever it’s looking for? Kajira asked, finding the thought more likely once she’d said it aloud.
”There’s a strong chance of that, which means it’s also probably pretty strong. Your defenses at full capacity?”
The woman nodded and darted forward a few more steps. She paused as she caught sight of a figure in the distance. ”About to engage. Be ready with backup,” she spoke, striding forward.

The female navi in front of her seemed to be speaking to herself, though it didn’t take the woman to realize that she was likely speaking to her NetOP. It was an interesting sight, and she wondered if that’s how she looked whenever she spoke with Blake. The woman spoke a few more words before moving deeper into the forest, leaving Kajira alone once more.
”Any idea what she was saying?” Blake asked, and the curiosity in his voice was so evident it was ridiculous, as far as Kajira was concerned. ”I couldn’t hear what she was saying. But she definitely seemed angry.”
Kajira didn’t speak at first, not wanting the woman to know that she was being followed…although as stealthy as Kajira was, she doubted that she’d gone completely unheard by the fire-elemental woman before her. After another few seconds, when she couldn’t hear anything but the forest around her, she stood to her full height, leaning against a tree.
”She’s definitely looking for something, and it sounds like a Navi, from the way she’s talking. Though her data seems a little weird, from what I can tell. You happen to run any scans while I was nearby?” Kajira asked, and the lack of immediate answer from the male’s end led her to believe that might not have been the case.
A sigh came over from the NetOP. ”I was too busy trying to hear what she was saying by messing with the audio. I didn’t get a chance to run any data scans on her. But if you think that there’s something off about her, when we get close again, I’ll see what I can do.”
Kajira let out a grunt of mild irritation. ”All right. Just don’t drop the ball again, Blake.” Silence was her only answer as she knelt back down, beginning to use the winds to subtly move the sound away from her, while at the same time, using the sand at her feet to cushion the impact so that her movements were softer.
Even still, she was slightly afraid that the woman was going to hear her. There was only so much that could be done to quiet oneself, and if she had the inkling to thoroughly investigate behind her, it wouldn’t take too long to find Kajira. Being quiet was something she was good at. Hiding was not.
However, as the woman drew closer, she could hear the other Navi speaking again. She slipped forward, moving around the trees, doing her best to stay out of sight. She saw what appeared to be a Homepage Lock. Did that mean that whomever this woman was looking for, it lived beyond that homepage? Though her curiosity was piqued, Kajira knew she couldn’t exactly sit and watch her destroy the lock.
”Hold up.” The voice stopped Kajira’s movements cold, and she realized that Blake must be doing the scans that he should’ve done the first time. The woman didn’t move, waiting for the scans to complete before she moved forward. She didn’t want to walk into something that could potentially get her deleted.
”Yeah. There’s definitely something weird about her. I’m not sure what it is, though. She seems normal…sort of.” The man sounded slightly less sure of himself, now that he’d actually run the scans.
”Blake, what in the hell are you talking about? You’re not being very clear and that is extremely unhelpful.” Kajira’s tone was bitter, as she was quite literally on the verge of going out to meet this woman to inform her that what she was doing was probably illegal and that she would need to cease and desist. Not that she believed this one was going to listen, anyway.
There was a grunt of irritation from the other end. ”Look. The scans said that she was normal, but the data pattern was slightly abnormal. I’m not certain how but there was definitely something off about it. I’m going to keep running the data against some other programs I have; you’ll have to go and confront her. She seems about your Version, from what I can tell.”
”All right, all right. If something happens though, it’s coming out of your hide,” she growled, before she began to move forward, creeping up closer to the female. She was about to speak when the other turned, glancing over her shoulder for a brief second before whipping around, slamming a burning fist into the ground. ”What the hell!?” Kajira exclaimed as she leapt backward, the flames turning the grass and forest around her into an inferno.
What the hell was with this chick? You didn’t just set a whole forest on fire on a whim. Kajira growled, widening her stance and thrusting her palm downward. A ripple of sand blasted outward from her palm, quenching most of the flames, leaving the sand atop the grass. Better ugly than burnt.
”I am Kajira.exe of the ONB. You’re now under arrest for the destruction of property, and intent to break a Homepage lock. Present your ID and come along quietly,” Kajira demanded as she stood, thrusting a finger at the woman.

”Well isn’t she a cocky little-“ the male began, before Kajira cut him off with a hiss. There was no need to get into any spats right now. She watched the other female with a questioning, curious gaze. Whoever this woman was, she obviously viewed herself as being above any sort of law. That was dangerous, especially in an environment such as this, governed by the pre-programmed laws. Those who were to put themselves above the society and laws were the ones who caused the most damage.
Even though Kajira often didn’t much care for the rules and laws of the ONB, she knew why they were in place. Without law, and without order, there was just chaos, and it would be a place that no one could call home. ”Done nothing that is of my concern, hm?” Kajira asked, turning her head to look behind her, and then around her at the charred trees. ”I find it strange that you treat the destruction of property to be nothing of concern. Not to mention that doorway is locked. I’m giving you one more chance to step away from it and present your Identification.”
There was a tense silence that followed those words, and Kajira didn’t know exactly how to continue, aside from outright attacking the woman, which was going to be against the laws and regulations. Granted, she was resisting by not presenting her identification and ceasing to desist on what appeared to be an attempt at opening the door.
”You’re going to need to apprehend her, Kaj. She doesn’t seem like she gives two shits what you think.” Blake spoke, his voice calm and collected once more. That meant that he was likely preparing to support her in battle. She gave a frown, not wanting to have to fight this woman; she didn’t even know her name. Yet there was only so much that she could do with words.
She took a hesitant step forward, wondering what Blake might’ve developed upon his findings of her data. ”You find out anything new on her? Any reason why her data seems so different?” She couldn’t quite put a finger on it, but merely talking to this one made her feel ill-at-ease, which was unusual, given the circumstances that the woman generally found herself in. It had been a good long while since she’d been in a position where she wasn’t entirely certain what the outcome was going to be.
”The only weird thing that I can tell is that it’s almost as if her body is emulating data, rather than actually having it. It’s…hard to explain,” he spoke, hoping that she wasn’t using this talk to buy time to muster up her courage. Kajira wasn’t normally this flustered by others, and that alone made him worry some. What was this woman, and what was she doing trying to open a locked homepage? ”It doesn’t look like any other ONB operatives are on their way, either, so if crap hits the fan, I’ll bail you out,” he said, which definitely didn’t help Kajira’s confidence.
Yet the woman took in a single, deep breath. She set her expression to be one of irritation, and moved forward towards the other. ”This is your last chance to answer me. After that I’ll have to forcibly place you under arrest for what we’ve gone over thus far as well as resisting arrest.” Kajira was ready, even if she didn’t know what this woman was capable of. Her defenses were superior, there was no question of that.

The feminine Navi merely watched this fire maiden as she drew closer, curiosity growing as she wondered what she was capable of. The data, as Blake had stated and that she’d surmised, was a little off for a Navi, yet she still seemed no different than herself or any of the other Navi she’d met. Still, there was something to this one that made her hesitant.
”Well it sorta looks like you’re gonna have to duke it out, Kaj,” Blake stated from his vantage point, safe in the world of humans. ”I’ll keep running diagnostics on her from here while you’re fighting, but I don’t know that I’ll be a whole lot of help. You’ve got your power, and she’s got hers. Let’s see what’ll happen.”
Inwardly, Kajira gave a sigh of both irritation and resentment. Blake often treated her as a thing, rather than as a thinking, feeling creature. And while he had, technically, designed her, he’d given her a fairly extensive artificial intelligence program that she was fairly certain he’d forgotten he’d done. But she wasn’t about to just ignore what he was saying, because he did have a point. This…navi. There was something about her that both interested and repulsed Kajira.
”All right. I’m going to close the communication line; if you find out anything good, let me know,” she stated as she came to a stop, a few feet remaining between the two. The communication line shut a moment later, and the female unclenched her right hand, the wind beginning to gather around her as she watched the other. The flames had begun to build as Kajira had drawn closer, and she got the distinct impression of a rattlesnake in watching her, and could almost hear the rattle shaking.
”It appears you’re not going to stand down. I do hope you brought something other than flames to the table!” she spoke as she darted forward, the wind gathering about her arm as she moved. It surrounded the forearm like a blade, and she braved the oncoming flames as the wind began to pick up grains of sand from the ground beneath her as she slashed downward with her right arm before the wind leapt to her left and she brought it around in a violent left hook.
Normally, Kajira was one to fight at range, but she was curious to see what kind of a hit this one had. As she controlled wind, it was often that her foes would immediately assume that she was a frail, agile fighter who specialized in avoiding attacks…but this was not the case. In fact, it was almost the opposite, as Kajira used the winds that surrounded her as a buffer, causing opponents’ attacks to miss their mark entirely.
Then again, with this one, there was a small part of her that wondered if perhaps there might be a bruise left on her body after the fight had concluded. She couldn’t help but smirk; she hadn’t been this interested in a fight in a good, long while.

The initial attack from Kajira was blocked, and in that, the woman drew a large dose of frustration. However, that melted away almost instantly as the wind that appeared around her hand slashed through the woman’s glove, leaving behind a slashing bruise in its wake. In this, Kajira couldn’t help but to feel a little proud; the battle had barely started and she’d already dealt damage to this foe. Yet even in that, the damage was fairly minimal, and the second attack, which was coming around, was going to be blocked with superior knowledge.
And indeed, the second attack, the left hook, had been avoided quite spectacularly. The woman’s arm had come around, and for a brief second, it almost looked as if it were going to strike home, but then they fire navi’s open palm shot forward, slamming into Kajira’s forearm, and sending the attack wide, though it added additional force to the blow, causing it to actually begin to lose her balance. However, a slight shifting of the wind and the sand at her feet restored that, and just in time, too.
The other had spun upon the execution of the open-fist parry, and used that whirling momentum to deliver a powerful thrust kick into Kajira’s midsection. There was a sudden flare up of wind at the point of impact, which deflected a great amount of force from the blow, leaving only a surging forward momentum which was still more than enough to knock Kajira backward. The woman grunted as the raw force of the blow still travelled through her protective winds, and she felt a light bruising on her stomach as she skidded backwards.
The force sent her backwards several feet, and she thrust a hand down as she moved, slowing her own momentum, coming to a stop a short distance away. Who was this Navi, and why did she command such power? The woman didn’t have a great deal of time to think as she saw her fiery opponent leap into the air in a blaze of glory, flipping once through the air. Whoever this was, she was very skilled at hand-to-hand combat, enough so that even with Kajira’s nigh-impregnable defenses, the attacks still seemed to land, if only somewhat.
There was no time to think, however, as her foe descended, aiming the left leg down in a powerful axe kick that would, if it hit, likely shatter the data that made up Kajira’s skull. With a grunt, the woman let the winds surround her hands and arms in a tight-knit barrier of moving winds and widened her stance. As her enemy came within striking distance, Kajira thrust up her arms. The wind exploded outward, forming a dense barrier of air between her and the heel of the fire navi.
There was a brief second where neither one of them moved, but eventually the force of impact pushed them both away, with Kajira sliding backwards another few feet and her foe seemingly flipping backwards through the air, unaffected by the defense. Kajira’s arms, which had taken the blow of force, stung slightly, but she wasn’t about to let it end here. With a growl, she extended her hands forward, the wind beginning to dance around her fingertips.
The wind began to spiral until it resembled two spinning spears of raw air. ”Take this!” she roared out as she sent the two whirling forward, the spears moving like missiles as they homed in on their target, the sand all around them being picked up by the concentric winds, turning them into virtual sand-blaster drills, both aimed right at the woman. Kajira took a step back as they were let loose, watching her foe.
The woman was much more keen on fighting at range, as it guaranteed she didn’t have to get dirty while fighting. However, from what she’d already seen of this one, it looked like no matter what she was going to do, she was going to end up fighting her up close and personal. ”Any useful data yet?” Kajira asked Blake, hoping that her NetOP had come up with at least something by now.
”The program’s name is Amaterasu.exe. That’s about all I’ve uncovered so far. I’d like to conclude that since she’s named after a Sun Goddess, she probably uses Fire, but we already knew that.” Blake stated, rather dryly.
Kajira sighed.

Kajira let out a low growl as it seemed her opponent was far from put off by her windy defense, and as soon as the other had touched the ground, she was already moving forward again. Thankfully, the wind that surrounded her had given her the foresight to launch the two javelins of raw centripetal force at her adversary. Amaterasu saw them, and decided that, rather than try to take them head on, (which is what Kajira would’ve put money on her doing,) the woman would attempt something else to avoid them. The wind-navi saw her foe lift the right hand into the air, which was positively glowing with raw, fiery power before she slammed it into the ground, sending out a shockwave of power.
There was a sudden silence at the point of impact, and the female saw the shockwave approaching, one formed of raw force, of the very wind that she commanded. She gave a curse as it approached, swarming with all the force contained in an explosion. Instinctively, she brought up her aura of wind, the aura dissipating most of the force, and what remained of it was ignored by her as the tight barrier of wind that surrounded her form, and the layer of sand over her skin kept the force at bay. The few pieces of debris that were carried by the blast were harmlessly deflected by the wind, and Kajira’s eyes narrowed as the wind died down, the clouds of dust still floating through the air.
”Blake, can you detect where she is?” she spoke, looking to get some assistance from her NetOP. However, there wasn’t a response, at least not at first. She frowned, about to speak again, when a burst of static cut through her receiver. She could hear bits and pieces of Blake’s voice, but she had no idea what it was that he was trying to say. It was like trying to listen to a radio station with virtually no signal…and that meant that she had no help. She was alone in this, which was something a bit frightening, as she didn’t have Blake’s brain to help her with the problem solving.
She pondered what to do with the situation…there wasn’t exactly a clear cut way out of it. She didn’t detect any movement from Amaterasu, though that didn’t say a whole lot if the other was trying to be stealthy. Then again, not once had the fire navi attempted to be stealthy, which said to her that she might be resting after the attack? But that didn’t make a lot of sense either, as her foe didn’t seem the type to sit around and rest when there was fighting to be done. Even furthermore, Kajira didn’t know how to search for her opponent without arousing suspicion…anything she did to move the wind or sand in the air would only give a clue to her own location, and taking an unguarded hit from Amaterasu was akin to suicide.
Still, standing here in the dust cloud was about as pointless as the other option, and so Kajira decided that if she didn’t know her opponent’s exact location…she’d just hit everywhere. Letting out a roar of power, the wind around her began to shift and turn, drawing in on itself as it began to rotate. The woman let the wind around her take the dust that was in her close proximity, along with the debris nearby, using it as additional firepower as the spinning wind began to grow, taking on the form of a cyclonic mass. She didn’t waste a single moment, generating pure, raw rotational force into the growing wind.
”…re you doing!?” Blake’s voice finally broke through the stillness, and she was somewhat ashamed to admit to herself that hearing her NetOP’s voice actually reassured her, despite the fact that he seemed fairly antagonistic to what she was attempting to accomplish. To her, the solution was a simple one, though Blake had already likely figured out three or four other possible options in order to accomplish the goal, but ones that would keep her safer. Still, there was no turning back now as she let another burst of cyclonic wind emanate out from her, the force of the winds actually beginning to cause her balance to shift a little as she tried to keep them spinning with the utmost force.
“Hrraaahh!” she roared out as she let the winds break, no longer tamed under her control. There was a sudden burst of wind outwards, several trees looking as if sand-blasters were hitting them as their bark-like data withered away under the force of the wind-driven sand. As it blew outward, the woman let out a panting breath, her legs shaking a bit. That had…definitely taken more out of her than she’d planned.
