I have been wondering for a while how people came up with their navi ideas, so I began thinking others may have the same question (if not, I would still like to know) If you wish please post what your inspirations of your navis are.

Most of mine I've either used on other sites (Rave, Ochre) or I just get a random spontaneous idea. Like for Renay, who's not in story yet but I have stats and RP approval, I got this random RP string in my head that I couldn't help but make into a Navi.

Three of mine came from an idea I got. My first was Genesis, and I got that idea shortly after coming on to the site and posted him up. Then I thought of Xion and Twilight, the inspiration for those coming along after I saw......>_o. Can't remember at the time. Draze I got from Meso before he vanished. Though yeah, they're mostly ideas that just came to my head.

Excuse for the long-windedness... this is, in fact, in order of creation:
Toxin: Came up with him the night I found the site, vaguely inspired from Warhammer 40k's Chaos army, specifically Grandfather Nurgle: Was building an army list earlier that night. Fleminger is actually the name of the Chaos Lord from that army list, which I came up with on my own... only to find out here a couple days ago, it's a German last name. <_<
Nocturne: My musically-named navi... Claimed the name before making the navi. With a name like Nocturne, he obviously had to be a lord of the night and generally darkness. IIRC, his strategy was just a random hoo-ha I'd thought of. How he got the 'good' darkloid personality, I'll never know.
Frame: After two darkloids, I needed a lightmonger. His strategy's origin is convoluted, but I felt a militaristic style would be a good change from the casual personality's of his two predecessors.
Archman: Long, long ago, in a galaxy where Toxin actually drew consistently, he made a Robot Master named Archman. Then, several years later, Stef was making a mercenary faction. The Archman we know today was a merger of the Robot Master and an 'Assassin' navi I'd been working on for him.
Scorchman: I wanted a Fire navi, so I made one. I have some concept sketches, and I love how I implemented the lances. Currently owned by Aran. <_<
Genkaku: Salem wanted an illusionist navi, I theorized one, but it was already too much mine, so he just told me to keep going with it. Not active atm.
Aitekai: *shrugs* Felt like making my first point system. I think she came before Rain... either way: I know she's HEAVILY inspired by the 'Aikido' martial art. Why? Like many other things, I have no clue. Currently owned by Salem.
Rain: Inspired by, not the rain, but a local waterfall which I love to just sit and watch. I wanted to make an Aqua navi, who embodied the zen-like calm I felt whilst observing the falls. No clue how the clone strategy came into play.
Mugen: Built as a Genesis-killer due to some claims that he couldn't be defeated. Also, I wanted to introduce a bunch of effects which were NOT done on any navi's previously. Seriously, Jake (former admin) had me go through and grab every single status reduction that had been created, and I used that as a cross reference for Mugen: It was unique in a lot of ways. Currently owned by Salem.
Aludols: Personality quirk? Yeah... that had something to do with their creation. There was some inspiration for their name, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was.
Blight: Made to be an RV navi. That is all. Rotten, corpselike, and generally perfect as an undead, I remember that his appearance came to me long before the name or need.
Drillman: My Capcom navi. Nuff said. Strategy-wise, I tried to mimic the annoyingness of his EXE3 version. I think I succeeded, whilst adding a touch of my own sense of where he shoulda been. >_>
Heir: Dedication of mine to a very special friend. Although quite a bit more sadistic and with a lotta bit more dark. ^_^
Glissando: Second musically named. The name and personality followed the concept: A very special skill that may be another V20 submission, or I'll just bring him in at V10. Originally named 'Bravado' due to his western style (modeled after a-typical western-flick cowboy), everything else just fit in, and there he stands.

oh goody. I like explaining mine.
Mirror: Origonated as a character for Havoc (which was odd, seeing as he wasnt an online RPer) Turned him into my own guy when I got here. He's since evolved into a much cooler guy than he used to be. He used to be MegaMan sized, with a large right fist, and a visor and mouth guard. Now, he's about 6'4'' and much awesomer. Pic can be found in my stats thread.
Mummy/Tomb: Was a char for a sprite comic I worked on for a while. He was actually inspired by the Mummy's from Boktai.
MagmaMan: An enemy from my sprite comic. He converted into a good guy, so I made him here.
Magma Dragoon: MD is one of my favorite X Chars. Ramen let me make him for my birthday my first year on MMM.
Gareth: Same as MD. XP
Spore: Inspired by the song "Parasites" by Ugly Casanova. I wanted to make a wierd RP guy, but he ended up being a pervy darkloid.
Whalen McDuff: I don't actually have him made yet, but at the ElecMan auction, Ramen liked my RP sample for Elec, but thought RK RPed Elec better. But I was good enough that he said I earned a capcom navi. Thus, McDuff. He's probably my third favorite X char.

Hope this is OK to bump after over a year.
My first guy: I don't know what I was thinking. Total crap sandwich.
Lemons: Originally named Darwin, before I realized there was another. I think I had been reading about Darwin on wikipedia when I was trying to think of a navi.
Thibault: Pent up anger toward my high school's vice-principal.
Ossia: My musically-named navi. We'll see what he does soon enough.

It's fine.... truth be told, I never actually saw this topic. Think I'll join in =)
NapalmMan The literal original Navi of the MMM. I picked NapalmMan as my "main" due largely to my work with the NapalmMan chips back on the Battle Network 2 message board. His personality (ORIGINAL personality) struck me as one of the better from the BN series, and his battle style was one of the only more strategic styles in the entire game. It's taken me literal years to perfect a style that matches his BN2 style, but I feel that I finally did it.
Resonance My main music-themed Navi. Resonance was my 1st attempt at a "custom" Navi, and had the original name of "Fusion" due to his sprite being a fusion of multiple soul sprites from BN 4/5. His name was chosen based on his backstory, primarily his power of Forced Unison. He was sort of an experiment for me, one that went very well and led to a few of my better creations.
Discord My 2nd music-themed Navi, designed to be an anti-Resonance in origin. At the time of Discord's creation, darkloids were considered VASTLY under-powered, and so I sold his sprite and stats to Niall (who never used him). I took him back after Niall left the site, and he currently stands as my sole darkloid (Caliga is an NPC).
Torrent When I made torrent, I was fairly deep into a game named "Tales of Pirates", and wanted a nautical themed Navi beyond PirateMan. The result was Torrent; a Navi with TERRIBLE stats but a ton of RP fun (when story is moving near him).
Turbine Turbine is, in actuality, my first Navi in a specific sense. I designed Turbine's appearence several years before the Melee was EVER made, but waited to create him until I knew EXACTLY how I wanted him.... and my plans worked out perfectly. Turbine is my most complex and complete Navi, he does EVERYTHING that I had wanted and more. His entire design was to be a light Navi who doesn't reflect the super-heroic nature of someone like X; he reflects the light in his own quiet and refined way, working through a troubled past and attempting to better the future, but doing so alone. Turbine is just about my favorite Navi, the ONLY ones who come close are NapalmMan, Selah, and Challenger (some come closer to others, I'd say NapalmMan=Turbine)
Selah Selah's designed to mirror ancient Biblical wisdom, his design being a sanctified Golem with the power to think for himself and reason. He has an undying loyalty, true kindness, and a deep caring for those around him. His strategy was actually made in a single night after a convo with Diamond, and is obviously based on heavy defense. His strat borrows from Turbine a bit, but not too much.
Challenger This guy is another favorite of mine: I noticed that most everyone (myself included) uses weapons in some way, and I decided to make a Navi who used no weapons at all; a boxer. While his fighting style has evolved into something more all-around, Challenger hits my goal VERY well. He's an Irish boxer with a powerful competitive spirit, a bit of a thirst for revenge, a keen though somewhat naive mind, and a heart of gold. He's brash, outspoken, loud, and just plain fun. Stats-wise, Challenger was designed for heavy endurance and powerful strikes. He can dish a ton and take a ton, making him a berzerker of sorts.

Hmm, well most of my navis are either based off prior things or random character designs I sketch up during school. draconiAro is basically a draconic version of "Aro" I made when I was 8 except with a lot more depth. FYI, Aro went from THE BEST MAVERICK HANTER AVAR to CRAZY NAVI THAT CAN TURN INTO A JET to TIME TRAVELER WHO CAN MANIFEST IN BOTH DATA AND MATTER to what I've got now.
Were you to take a look at MMBNOnline, you'd see I have at least 10 navis, all of which were spawned off unique ideas (though I usually created sets of 3 for stories).
Uhh, I'm probably going to start basing them off metaphysics and metatheories by now...

Hmm, wasn't gonna type this up for ALL the navis I've owned, but why not.
Halenite: As some of you know, Halenite is like...my staple first character name on any site I'm on (for the most part). You see the Halenite, it certainly better be me, otherwise someone stole mah name! As my first navi, there really wasn't too much to him. Some of you may argue otherwise, but I still think the original incarnation of Halenite was a bit of a flop both in battle and RP (for those of you unaware, Halenite had like...4 or 5 stat revamps all done due to story purposes lol)
Nuguri: Nuguri...I'm really not sure WHY I made him initially, but he became the basis for Denadite's first Hyper Mode...after Nuguri got Inertia-pwnt in-story (distinctly remembers Inertia stabbing Nuguri in the chest or somethin'...)
Denadite: Originally made him to kinda be Halenite's rival. Which overall, I think worked pretty well. They weren't like, exact opposites and cruel with each other, but they still competed with each other for a little bit. Also was the original basis for my whole Draconic Navi backstory (some of you know for sure what that is, some of the new members might not.
the next three were made essentially around the same time. These three were all part of the Draconic Navi backstory along with Halenite and Denadite.
Daja: Draconic navi of Earth. I made her to be the solo navi of the group. Only female of the Draconic Navis too (I distinctly recall someone making a power ranger joke about the Draconic navis at one point......)
Zheganiu: Draconic of Fire. Made him, again, for the Draconic Navi setup. He was a bit more beast-like than any of the other navis I made, but I think that made him a bit more fun to RP.
Epitaph: Ok, so Epitaph I had some fun with. I made him as a navi pieced together from fragments of several other unnamed navis, making him a bit of a weapons expert in several areas. I basically dubbed him the Draconic of Metal/Steel for lack of a true element.
So that's it for the Draconic Navis! Onto more!
Demoa: I made him as a navi infected with a virus I called Demon. I honestly don't recall much about him, because I ended up scrapping him not too long after creation.
Arii: I don't entirely recall the purpose for creating Arii other than I was getting bored RPing a primarily male group of navis. Honestly though, bad idea. I couldn't really get into the personality I had set in for her, and in the long run, she ended up scrapped.
Raizen: Raizen I made initially because I wondered how it a completely neutral navi would do (element, karma, type, everything). I never imagined he'd gain both Equinox and Solar in the long run. With Normal and Equinox, Raizen stood his ground for quite a while against Ar-Loria (a navi of stef's) who was built to be defensive. After gaining Solar, he became even more of a powerhouse. Raizen's MAIN purpose is my money maker. I remember calculating the total boost he got, but I don't remember now.
Paladin: Originally made him because I enjoyed the thought of a navi going from the dark to the light, so there ya go. Only real reason I made Paladin. He can now switch between his Paladin and Dark Knight forms too!
only ones left are Glaedr, Kiru, and Lyre, and I don't feel like typing more right now, so there :P

Ok... Time for the indepthness.
RAVE.EXE: Rave is my first Navi. Uses my favorite elements, simple enough. He started out being able to twist aquatic energy to weapons, but I never did it with his Ice element -- so, I started calling his ice abilities kind of his spells or innate abilities, hence, the "wizard of winter" moniker (coincidentally, the musical piece in all the "Dancing Christmas Lights" beer commercials is called "Wizards in Winter." That's his main theme song. XP). And I can't explain where the whole "This one" thing came from. His backstory goes MUCH longer than just the True Form storyline - in fact, the current miniarc highlights the past that he never knew in a dark undertone. I'm actually attempting to put it on paper with the rest of my clowns - er, Navis.
BREAK.EXE: My first attempt at a Recon Navi, first attempt with an aiming speed move, first attempt with counters, first attempt with wind and fire. Also first of mine to be converted into a darkloid with the excuse of getting stronger. Needless to say... He sucked. Never won a fight in his time here, and his deletion was in a way engineered - he attacked Nebula Grey by himself in the Undernet.
SPECTRUM.EXE: She was devised to be Rave's sister and her stats were designed around an improper application of the site's strength/weakness system (see various topics around here for my complaints about that >_>). She tweaked people's elemental weaknesses, made them more pronounced, outright changed them... She was fun to use. My first Shadow and Laser elemental. And first Support Type.
DRIFTER.EXE: My first real Lightloid (Rave and Drifter both got +50 Karma at V1, Rave had won NotM but Drifter was my first light elemental) and my first experimentation into Wood. None of my first four shared an element except for Normal element. Yes, all four had normal. I don't recall what prompted his creation - but he DID lose an eye. =D
SHATTER.EXE: Dunno why Niall kept laughing at the name. >_> He was my darkloid hater despite no Light element. Used Crystal, and finally shared an element that wasn't Normal - Elec (with Spectrum) and Ice (with Rave). The Ice/Elec combo I later explored with another Navi.
GALE.EXE: After the story hints, I had to finally reveal this one. >_> V5, Defense Type (second type repeat) with my first earnable element, Bug. He was... Shall we say, a little twisted. Needless to say, he isn't around no mores.
ARANDAS SENDRASK.EXE: I LOVED using this guy, and it was a shame he had to be axed for Rave to be entered into Neo Arcadia. He was created around the same time as Gale, and actually in creation I couldn't decide which weapons I wanted him with - tonfa (which I used for Gale) or a lance/armblade combo (which I kept writing accidentially into Gale's stats). I settled on the latter and it was FUN. Shadow/Aqua/Wind elementals with a cycling element system that I thought kept people on their toes.
OCHRE.EXE: I'd used this guy on another site I created but I finally brought him here. Dad was in the hospital and I was randomly drawing stuff in a notebook while making stuff for my site, and the original character was born. The storyline I used for him on my site - a character possessed by the Maverick virus yet in firm sight of the ideals he sought to uphold - came afterwards, in the shower. >_> WHAT?!
VERSE.EXE: My lone musical Navi (who I traded to Silare for Requiem) who I had a lot of fun making. A defensive powerhouse who could swap between his hyper modes freely, spoke tersely and driven to kill Rave, Gale and Spectrum. Well, I HAD to have an antihero to the True Form storyline that was the main hub of my characters for a while.
AR LORIA.EXE: Contrary to Jon's statement, Ar Loria was NOT built as a defensive powerhouse; originally, he was built to take full advantage of the Destructive Blow Giga Program (all breakers become omni). Such tools as the Diamond Cross not only became defensive tools - they became more than essential. After the Diamond Cross, he had only 900 HP thanks to the Scarface Card. How he EVER got above 2000 HP is beyond me. He is an offensive powerhouse with more than enough defense to stand up to most foes, and he's an energetic, curious Navi who can hardly stop smiling - kind of like a male Mika.
I'll add the rest later, bed beckons.

Lets have a go, shall we?
Holyman.Exe If my memory proves accurate, the first ever navi I successfully got approved on the MMM was Holyman. He was a product of a fanatic christian phase I went through during my 13th year. That's right, I joined up at the exact date at which one is considered a valid member. For any stalkers that may read this post that was back in 2005, so I'll leave you to do that math. Those were some crazy years, the site had just launched a pro-boards site after its base site closed, and I was lucky enough to stumble upon it. A stroke of luck it was.
Holyman was for all practical purposes a member of the cloth, an avid christian navi which expended unrelenting energy spreading the doctrine of Christ. Don't ask me how that worked in an era and setting as diverse as the MMM's, because in all honesty it didn't >.>;;;. Truly this navi was really a result of religious fanaticism joined with personal problems and a bad case of noobism. I think he had a cross shaped staff of some kind and he always wore white silken/linen robes. He was a support type, and back then support type navi's were utterly abysmal in contrast to others and had immense difficulty leveling. Holyman lost every single one-on-one match he was in, only surviving group battles which were extremely rare in that era.
Due to my extreme immaturity and also the MMM's relative infancy in contrast to what it has as of today become, Holyman lacked any true strategy. In spite of helping hands from staff I just couldn't get him off the ground. In all honesty he only ever made it to V3 before I scraped him, which probably played a role in his relative weakness. Back in those days written rules were scarce and the battle system functioned differently, furthermore their was no "V-Cap", simply put if memory serves the highest version navi was V10 and if you were V11 you were a god. Yeah, things have changed in 4 years.
Conflict.Exe Conflicts basic design sprang about from the emotional roller-coaster that most folks with Bi-Polar possess. A continual flux of emotions that never ends nor ever truly begins but merely always is. Those that arn't medicated would describe their lives as torn and cold. They live in a world comprise of two worlds, a land of shadow and a land of light. That's why Conflict wore an odd mix of both the dark and light element and played them out as insanely as one possessing them for any reason other then combat would. In the realm of strategy, Conflict was lacking in more ways then one. The time period in which the character was crafted likely played a major role in this, most normal members of the time were in the infancy of strategy and I was by no means an exception.
Conflict ended up wiped in one of my frequent cycles of absence and return. I decided to ultimately sacrifice and scrap the navi, moving onto something better.
Sabishii.exe Sabishii oddly was never meant to be an MMM navi. Originally he was just a concept I had had whirling around in regards to a story involving ancient guardians and their social struggles as immortals. If you were to translate the name Sabishii you would find it is the Japanese word for "Lonely", that which Sabishii was in many ways suppose to embody. This was during an odd time in my life, where I crawled into something of a depression of sorts, the characteristics of Sabishii at that point in many ways expressed my own. Wandering, predominately silent, unable to connect or interact with others without continual negativity or self loathing. These feelings were in large part hidden behind a facade of pure logic and reasoning. He's an odd relic of that era, which has thanks to all things come to a pleasant close. The navi by himself is modeled after the concepts and precepts of the samurai. One will notice he follows many of their codes and practices to the best of his ability. Furthermore, in keeping with Japanese folk-lore, Sabishii's soul is said to rest within his blade.
Sabishii also held my first ever actual working strategy. Tossing aside petty feelings about the character, I realized that he spent alot of his time action slot spamming. I came to a conclusion that this alone was fairly ineffective and therefore made steps to actually build a system based around getting in as many hits as possible. The navi operates on a "string" battle system in which a navi has a list of attacks they use within a certain situation granting less action slot expenditure while still dealing status and combat damage.
Sidenote: "Romanchikku", Sabishii's operator, translates to "Romantic" in english. The two were a division of the same idea which expressed together stated "Lonely Romantic".
Bridger.Exe Bridger is the newest navi I've crafted, and as of yet has little actual participation in story. His personality and basic appearance are all references to a commanding officer in Advance Wars named "Grit". The name originates from Bridger's underlying philosophies, meaning "that which connects" you begin to see the basic precepts of the navi's existence. The navi's entire premise is connectivity and unity, making things harmonious and functional. The navi has a simple motto "Lets take 'er nice an' slow" which encompasses his entire mindset. Life shouldn't be lived in a fast paced society where you are alive one moment and dead the next as far as Bridgers concerned. Why get yourself all rustled up in some "city feller' rush" when you could just as easily take a stroll through the countryside and enjoy the finer points of life he asks.
In regards to actual persona, Bridger is for all practical purposes similar to a southern cowboy persona coupled with a sniper rifle. It was after all in the great west where the sharp was invented, the precursor to the sniper rifle and the origins of the word "sharpshooter". Everything about this navi is drawn out and slow, if their is one thin the character knows its patience.
Strategy wise, Bridger relies predominately on charges and burning action slots to generate high powered attacks. The focus is more on one shot kills and putting as much damage as one can into each shot then cramming as many shots as someone can into their attack phase.

Some of you *cough Demoa* Have a lot of navis. Lucky me I have a whole 2 =D
Let's start with Gush, he's my guinea pig, that's all he was meant for; try out the ideas that crept up into my noggin and see how they held up, if it were good, I'd proceed to try and scrape a navi out of it and move on with something new; if it were a bad idea I'd just think of something new. I haven't HAD any bad ideas so far; let's see how this new one goes though ;p
Jax was originally a navi version of Lexaeus from the KH series, literally... As he is now you can watch a video of someone battling him and see each of attacks except maybe one or two. NEXT version though He'll be more original.
MAN MY LIST WAS SO LONG IT'S UNREAL!

Hmm... I aughta' update my list, as well as add depth to my little sentences:
Shadowhunter: OMG, this was my first navi, and he was just awful. And I have no one to blame but myself. He was a Dark/Light/Shadow vampire hunter navi, based on the Van Helsing movie, as well as some castlevania games (I was in a Vampire phase... then Twilight killed that genre for me), and from the get-go I had already wasted 2 elements by making him 0 karma, leaving him as only getting bonuses from shadow. On top of that, he had very few breakers, leaving him unable to do much, if any damage. I scrapped him in favor of Pyro.
Personality wise, he was a bitter antisocial character, pretty 2-dimentional.
PyroArcanum was from my comic book series I was working on for a while. He originally had a much longer title, but I cut it down, as it was no longer as relevant. I had been needing someone to replace Shadowhunter for a while, and I had been looking through a few drawings I had done (not really good ones, mind you), and I found him. Originally he really didn't have much strategy, and was mostly an amalgam of successful navis I had seen. He was good, but not great, mostly because he was unfocused. Later (I think V2), I added the Astral Kamikaze attack (which had higher relative damage back then), which allowed for a big-damage strategy, which I'd make the fragile clones use it, and die. Unfortunately, despite massive adjustments to create a strategy from that, I soon found out that in later versions they would be much more blockable, meaning their existence was less useful, and despite being from many fronts my best navi, he declined in use.
Personality wise, he was a Chivalrous, Knight-like navi, rather driven at crime-fighting. I rather wished I could have fleshed him out a little more in rp, but I can never drag myself to do it.
Asylum was a nut-job. He was based on the main villain (or so you'd think) of my comic. His appearance while I still had him was that of a mental patient, disheveled, and straight-jacket clad, and shape-shifting. However his original plan was to be just a mannequin-like featureless body, with an assortment of colored rectangular segments over his body. I can't really remember much about his play-style, other than that he was a mediocre Intel navi, with reality warping attacks.
BlackRose was inspired by a script I was writing (although much of his personality branched off). The script was about a man Alaster Rose, soldier of a secret conglomerate: G.H.O.S.T. (of which I recycled for His MMM form, Essentially the same concept, but on a bigger, more CIA like scale.) He would then be suspected of being a spy, and his family was killed. After that, he investigated their death, and began killing off those responsible.
The BlackRose of the MMM went through a few phases (at least in the limited RP I did with him, which was close to none.) Originally he was a bounty hunter, then an agile assassin, then a master of poisons (still an assassin though). Another character I wish I did more with.
Sandstorm is Asylum's current variant. After being cured of his insanity, he was removed from the Mental wing's care, (a sub-plot with asylum being the mental copy of a mental patient. With Asylum cured, the doctors knew what to do with the mental patient to cure him) he was discharged out in the real world, but without any real purpose anymore, he basically wandered around as a vigilante. He also has a few quirks involving veiled references to him being homeless, poor, party-crashing (i.e. not being invited) and other Zoidberg inspired things.
His strategy is, I think, the most successful, employing near fully damage negating effects, to outlast the opponent.
Vendix was my attempt in creating a normal (type) navi. She started as an idea for a lightloid, too, however she really wasn't there for much more than money making, sad to say.
Deadeye was slightly inspired by old snake in MGS4, as well as my attempt at making an s-attack specific navi. He is a moody, old, crotchety gunsman. He was originally a navi Sharpshooter.exe, and he was part of a stereotypical covert, undercover, conspiracy organization, part of many political assassinations and the like, but one team member, Caliburn, went rouge, and killed everyone else and blinded Sharpshooter, leaving him for dead, who with a sarcastic and ironic sense of humor, he renamed himself Deadeye (which is also a term for a sharpshooter) and went after Caliburn.
This was one of my favorite characters to make, because he basically is a one man army in his fight for revenge, and is unstoppable in this respect, even by police who may try to capture him. Also the fact that he has an ammunition bunker's worth of weapons to kill you with isn't bad either.
