Vanguard.EXE
The OEL's unique battle arena was definitely a sight to see. Many were perhaps attending the arena to see the old way, and to fight with chip data like heroes gone past. Vanguard was already a large proponent of the power held within the chips, an appreciation passed onto him since his earliest days within the Net. He was coming for the opportunity to study something else, entirely.
The effects of the Advanced Dark Chips were usually incredibly dangerous to field test, for a number of reasons. They were difficult to obtain, and also almost always spelled doom for those that used them in the field. This provided a means to test out the effects of the Advanced Dark Chips without such worries, so long as it was done carefully.
He got into his own little personal fighting arena, set the number of preferred participants to him versus one other combatant, and placed within the queue information what his intentions were:
I plan on recklessly and wholeheartedly using Advanced Dark Chips. The more dangerous, the better. If you would, as well, the information we could put together would be groundbreaking.
With all of that set up, Vanguard walked into the arena and immediately felt the download as his onboard folder filled up with power. The slotted coils around his wrists expanded and twisted to take on the large magazine of ammunition they were just provided with, and he scanned around the simple enough battlegrounds - like a true coliseum of old - to familiarize himself with the environment.
A round arena. Normalized floor panels were the default; off-white panels cross-sectioned in all directions, cut off at angles to make the circular arena. No fancy obstructions; an open field for battle. It had been a long time since he was inside of such an arena, even longer since it was solely for the purpose of study.
It reminded him of easier times. He waited, patiently, for whoever would come from the other side of his opposing doors.

Faith's voice introduced her arrival shortly after Vanguard had taken his place in the arena. She waved too, for whatever reason, as she stepped in to accept the challenge.
" And we never have had the change to spar with each other, so this should be doubly educational. "
Faith and Vanguard traveled together for quite a while, so they were certainly aware of each other's capabilities, but hadn't ever stood across each other on a battlefield, even in just a friendly engagement.
She was known to take initiative when presented the opportunity, this time being no different, but at least restrained from going ham on him with her dagger in favor of honoring the original intent of the invitation: to experiment with the Advanced Dark Chips.
Her only offensive action would be a TimeBomb that materialized between herself and Vanguard, which was less about being an actual attack and more about being a cheeky homage to her own roots. In her hand, she tossed a BugBomb up and down, like a baseball ready to be pitched, indicating which angle she'd be coming from in this ordeal.

Vanguard waved back to the familiar face as she entered the arena. He had become much more personable as he went throughout the Net these past few days - a truly dangerous place makes even the most straightforward of individuals seek like-minded souls - and Faith was a particular ally that he had come to respect. Her style of combat was interesting and adaptable, but her evasive technique was legendary. He would be hard-pressed to land a single strike on her.
"Knowing our two fighting styles, this should be a lot of back-and-forth that ends in either me running out of bullets or you actually getting hit by one. Ever since you survived that cataclysm, I've wanted to test my mettle against those legendary maneuvers.
"May the best of us win - or suffer the least terrible boiling pot of glitches in the process!"
It was a jovial welcoming to her challenge, but just as she opened up with a call to her roots, he opened up with one of his. Kneeling down, with his trusty cannon mounted on his knee for further support, and one hand underneath the barrel, he lined up that first shot and unleashed a caliber of power that only he was capable of, the exhausted energy seeming to funnel from his entire body in a wave of dark flames rather than just the back end of the cannon itself. Focused through a reticle, the beam of energy was focused into a laser-fine burst of energy, but moved fast. He expected it to be an easy enough thing for her to maneuver around. As usual, however, the beam of energy was still more than enough to put even the most hardened of Navis down if not respected.
All the same, as he fired the bullet, he stood up from his spot on the ground and also tossed up his own indication of what was coming next - a small, purple snow ball that formed in his hand, growing larger with each playful toss in the air to match hers.

Faith almost blushed at his praise, but as his shot came, she still boasted that prowess. Tilting just barely to the side as if to show just how precisely she could calculate the trajectory, it would have appeared that the attack grazed her, yet she stood unharmed once it had subsided, grinning playfully as if flaunting the talent that she had implied being humble about.
" And well said! Best of luck, Vanguard! "
As her Timebomb erupted, Faith tossed the Bug Bomb up in the air between them, catch both of them in the explosion. She took note of his own choice of Advanced Dark Chip, not concerning herself too much with a counter-option and instead just carrying on with what she figured would be the next best option to toy with in this showcase.
Holding that very option in the hand that normally held her dagger, the ADC began to shine brilliantly as if telegraphing for Vanguard what was in store for him.

He observed her, her senses sharp - perhaps as sharp as his - as she evaded the attack with incredible precision. With what came next, Vanguard held up his hands in order to prepare himself for the blast, but all the same let the force of the Time Bomb send him sprawling.
The dark explosion to follow was mixed in with the previous. It wasn't painful, but he felt his systems seize in response - some of his secondary features had failed from the blast.
"So, that one causes secondary Navi augments to fail," Vanguard noted, still standing from the force of the blast. "It seems to have an easy enough work-around. Out of the sake of study, should we remove it, or work through it, do you think?"
Before he gave her the opportunity to answer, she would notice that in the explosion his massive snow ball was now even larger, and Vanguard had taken the liberty of activating a slew of chips - obstacles dotted the battle ground on all sides of them, a knowing and terrible grin on his face.
"Anything in the name of research, right?"
With a resolute whirl of his hand, and a blast of dark energy from his body to give it extra force, Vanguard sent the snowball forward, the large snowball instantly attracting all of the little obstacles Vanguard had laid out into its form. It grew to massive proportions in the aftermath, and came steamrolling straight for Faith. Vanguard was left do deal with the intense cold of launching the thing, the blizzard it left in its wake crashing over him.
Vanguard gathered up all of the cold energy in his hand and formed it into a combat sphere with a curious moon symbol on it. This was his next tool of war, an answer to Faith's adaptability.

While Faith left the disablers on herself, there was no hard feelings if Vanguard chose to remove his own. There was no telling whether or not she'd remove hers later on either, after all.
But before considering that further, she found herself in the shadow of a massive blizzard ball that was empowered by the sudden new arrivals on the field.
" Dirty, but clever! "
As the snowball approached, Faith ducked down as if to let it roll over her. The objects it had collected seemed to line up perfectly so that one was jutting out at the front of the snowball just as it neared her, lifting it gracefully over her body as another jutted-out object caught the snowball on the other side of her body, as if she had slipped between two teeth of a gear.
Faith stood back up after the ordeal, laughing at the silliness of that feat but still satisfied by it nonetheless.
" I'll admit, that dodge was more about luck than skill. "
She pitched the glowing chip in her hand, splitting into multiple beams of light that spiraled toward Vanguard as if to chase him and further impede his auxiliary functions should any of them connect. It'd seem like a moot intent, given that the Bug Bomb already handled most of those, but it'd give her a non-verbal indication of whether he did indeed plan on working through the initial infection or not just based on how he reacted to it.
And in her other hand, another Advanced Dark Chip appeared as she continued her own experimentation with these forbidden weapons, a teasing grin on her face as she resumed her comment on her last evasive maneuver.

The Blizzard Ball was an interesting tool. As soon as it passed Faith by, it rolled around and came hurtling back towards Vanguard. He surged a wreath of flames from his body outward, and the blizzard ball bounced off of it, but rest nearby, as if waiting for another reason to roll.
Knowing what it was capable of, Vanguard put his eyes back on Faith, as the barrage of lasers came flying towards him. Recognizing it for what it was, he cursed, and decided to take her up on her offer.
"You know my fighting style too well - everything you've thrown at me so far has either been minuscule amounts of damage or too dangerous to get hit by."
Vanguard's material form disintegrated, leaving him as little more than a humanoid pyre, a silhouette of purple flames that stood his ground. As the lasers came, his form shifted, the flames looping around one another to simply allow the lasers to pass through, all the while Vanguard advanced forward, getting closer to feint with each careful movement of his body.
Once he was close enough, the coils on his wrists whirled as more chip data was used, and another set of objects came into existence. As a bull riled by a cape, the snowball in the corner suddenly rolled back into action, forcing Faith to have to deal with it again as he lifted up his hand and threw down the sphere of midnight. What erupted was a terrible blizzard, threatening to freeze Faith in her tracks.

Faith smiled at Vanguard's remark, keeping her eye on the Blizzard Ball as it ping-ponged around the arena until it began heading back in her direction for another sweep.
" I'm somewhat of a tactician of myself, you know? "
She just approached it from a different angle -- while Vanguard specialized in pinpointing his targets' weaknesses, Faith focused more on being flexible enough to cover her allies' weaknesses. Naturally, this came with having to know as much as she could about them in order to properly compensate what they lacked in any given situation. Her method was more subtle than Mistair's, who amplified others' perfomances; to Faith it was more about filling whatever role was missing in the team dynamic. That flexibility naturally led to adaptability, which had its own merit when she fought on her own.
As the Blizzard Ball approached again, Faith leapt over it in a rather sudden manner, gaining the altitude to clear over the top of it in much less time than seemed regular. She raised an eyebrow as the blizzard of the Blood Moon encompassed her, noticing that Vanguard had forgone the effort of making it difficult to dodge.
She would have evaded it either way, of course, but sometimes it took more effort to deal with things that way. In truth, landing a hit on her required a specific alternation of well-aimed and poorly-aimed-but-penetrating attacks to tax her as harshly as possible for each evasion. Vanguard could certainly land the winning blow if he found that "Goldilocks" tempo, though she wasn't sure if his sub-optimal play indicated whether he wasn't aware of that yet or if it indicated that he just wasn't trying in this case.
" How about a few surprises? "
From one tactician to another though, it was only fair that all tools were on the table.
After landing from her leap over the Blizzard Ball and tumbling out of the Black Moon's Blizzard, Faith threw her own Advanced Dark Chip to the ground which spawned into a Poison Anubis while red, ethereal wisps resembling her dagger flew toward him, as if deliberately provoking his adrenaline state.
Faith opened her hand as she stood there afterwards, flourishing an exclusive set of Battle Chips she'd accrued during her countless encounters with Viruses in defense of Gigamerica's network.
" These are up for grabs for this 'bout, but only during this fight. Don't go showing them off to any other folk you bring in here until the masses have discovered them as well, okay? "
The chips disintegrated into the air as if being absorbed by the atmosphere within the arena, temporarily adding them to OEL's Chip Database so that Vanguard could access them at his leisure. Among them were tools that'd certainly be able to lock Faith down if he'd used them right, meaning he'd be well-equipped to handle her antics going forward.
If the playing field wasn't even before, then it certainly was now, and how he used these in tandem with the impending Dark Laser would be a fine display of just how well he knew of her own weaknesses -- a discovery she was certainly looking forward to finding out.

Faith continued her flurry of avoiding or otherwise responding to attacks in such a way to mitigate their harm, and even tipped her hand to display other options he had at his disposal.
Having more options was never something he would complain about, but the lack of any true offense worth nothing so far was going to drag him down. All of the options in the world wouldn't help him if he failed to build up the tempo necessary to use them in tandem with his other capabilities.
As she put down the Poison Anubis, she imbued herself with the power of another chip to give herself an edge in using its abilities. Her incredible adaptability would enable her to simply reallocate her proficiencies to prevent herself from being hindered by its unique glitch, but the weight of the toxins in the air caused him to start coughing.
"I know we were in prison for quite a while, but haven't you had the time to bathe even once, since?"
It was a bit of banter to mark how much they had grown to know one another, his style in combat usually silent and precise. That being said, the noxious fumes in the air burned at his flesh, and yet his flames dwindling caused them to burn brighter. The heat expunged from their dwindling did not disperse into the environment, but was captured and used as an energy for the rest of his body, causing Vanguard's material form to further dissolve and leave way for the flames of his core to be displayed.
He started moving faster, his own keen eyes allowing him to disperse fields of energy to deflect the Blizzard Ball and the barrage of swords sent his way, but also strategically took one of the Custom Swords to his chest. Pressing his arm against the blade to turn the flat towards him, he took the brunt of its force without any of its lethality, the damage once again quickening his reflexes.
If nothing else, her decision to release the fumes would serve to build up the tempo he needed. As his fires burned and his coils turned, Vanguard stayed close to her to keep up the pressure, raising up a bomb to drop at her feet once again.
"I appreciate the new options - but I have a few tried and true methods for a Speedy Gonzales, myself." The explosion from his own mini bomb ripped through, with all of the incredible force he was known for, and through the barrage of explosives did he fire that terrible array of beams into, trying to pin her down.
His was a game of wits and wagers - force action, as the lack thereof meant almost guaranteed destruction. Each strike was lethal enough to kill, and if it wasn't, being hit by it was just as dangerous. She began to see his reticles for the first time, the explosion riddled with the small purple markers, and even the array of lasers having them looped around them as they flew, trying to mark her to make his attacks easier to land in the future.
Once he learned tactics and what they were willing to wager, he could start building his checkmate - and he had already seen much of her bag of tricks, by this point.
"I've got a pretty good idea of how to force you to yield - if you'll entertain the idea, it will take me a bit of time to prepare. If you manage, I'll yield to you, no questions asked."

Faith closed her eyes and laughed playfully at Vanguard's remark, raising one arm and "swooshing" the other hand from under her armpit in his direction as if pretending to fling more of her alleged body odor toward him.
Jokes aside, he seemed confident in his assessment of her and offered a respectable proposal.
" Oh? "
She kicked away the Mini Bomb at her feet just before it exploded, then noticed the reticles and smiled endearingly when she saw them, thinking in her mind that they were just blatantly marking the spots not to stand in. They seemed to be attached to the attacks themselves rather than a telegraph, though.
As the lasers closed in, she twirled in place to dance around them, each one narrowly missing her but singeing her clothes just due to the proximity to them.
" The answer is No. You will come at me directly and carelessly, and there will be no yielding. "
Her face even looked serious for a moment, but her sarcasm was indicated when it resumed its regular, happy demeanor. She further emphasized her agreement to his terms with how she handled the latest Advanced Dark Chip she'd been prepping: flicking it to the middle distance between them where a Prism spawned to catch it, erupting in a spectacular tower of... well, darkness.
That's what would have happened, at least, but the chip unintentionally ricocheted off of the rock and found its way to Vanguard instead. He seemed fine with that though, so Faith didn't fret her miscalculation there.
" I'm eager to see what you've got, then. You won't mind if I keep toying around with these dark chips myself, ofcourse? "

He observed as she once again whirled around the impending threat, as his own little web was being woven. He had a few ideas that might rap up this fight in a tight little bow well before his crescendo of tactical insight came to fruition, but, all the better if she surprised him and survived all of that, anyways.
What came next was the power of the Dark Tower. Avoiding it was folly, but taking it head one was lethal in his current state. The other option that existed, of course, was to try out his next new trick.
Loading several chips into place at once, Vanguard brought a familiar and helpful tool from his own bag of tricks. The boomerang was a trusty tool for particularly evasive Navis, if only because it forced them to do a cost-risk analysis from the moment he summoned it to his hand.
His eyes lined up with her even as she evaded the reticles, those purple crosshairs over his otherwise white eyes flaring with power as he launched it forward. The boomerang's arc unfurled with the power that he unloaded into it, creating a typhoon of dark flames that beat back the power of the dark tower, the poison anubis, and even her new body odor. All the while, the cursed doll he had summoned left it up to her what to do with it, as the cursed doll took on her appearance and was burned within the darkness of her own attack.
What he prepared next would be the crux of his chosen dark chips up until this point. If this did not succeed, he would simply wait for his other tactic, instead, and survive for as long as he could.

Faith looked surprised at the dark flames that encompassed him, brought about by the boomerang chip. She was certainly impressed by that new technique.
" Haven't seen that yet. "
Her eyes quickly found the Voodoo Doll resembling her within the blast radius of her last attack; her mind moved even quicker to resolve that predicament. Summoning a basic Rock Cube, she kicked it toward the doll, knocking it out of the influence range of the Dark Tower and sparing herself a rather uncomfortable hex.
Conveniently, the Rock Cube also impeded the path of Vanguard's Boomerang as it moved from its protective maneuver into an aggressive flight path instead -- the Rock Cube stood no chance, but it prevented Faith from having to deal with it.
She activated the Advanced Dark Chip in her own hand... but, for the most part, it just turned into smoke and evaporated in her hands, not really doing much for her compared to its Giga Chip counterpart. She shrugged at the discovery, as if to non-verbally say that it was worth a shot.
Her toxic unison was gradually beginning to subside, but the Poison Anubis stayed present to keep Vanguard company and resume the ongoing pressure that she didn't provide herself anymore. Being within its vicinity was beginning to become taxing for her, too, but she'd stick it out to see what else Vanguard had in store for her.

Faith was definitely making his work cut out for him, but he wasn't sure if she really saw the snare she was in, now. The voodoo doll concerned her, and she prevented herself from being the subject of its hex, but the trap in using it was already set.
As her Rock Cube was flung out to stop the Boomerang, Vanguard thought about kicking himself over such an oversight. It was of no matter, though. Vanguard took the brunt of her wafted stench, once again causing his fire to dwindle as his speed increased, and slotted in a few new chips to put his plan into motion.
"You don't see how much of a bad spot you're in, do you?" He called out through the caustic fumes, immediately followed up by the loading of a chip that changed the battle arena into an area closer to home. With her most recent chip use, she wouldn't be harmed by its presence, which is why he felt a little better in using it, but it would help him maintain his own physique moving forward. The heat of the lava rushing out from underneath him seemed to clear the air, as Vanguard was seen going back on his own word. In his hand rested a tiny bomb that she had provided him with; the Little Bomb that he had just moments ago informed her he wouldn't use.
"This is a pretty precarious situation, I'll be frank with you - good luck.
The energy from his body flooded into the bomb as he launched it forward, his sight creating a reticle in the air that it launched through, only increasing its speed, yet its trajectory was still aimed directly underneath her. As the bomb erupted, its explosion only intensified by the energy he flooded into it, Vanguard moved into position to catch her while its explosive cloud was still up.
If it was a matter of the attack being impossible to dodge, she had to use other methods to mitigate the harm to her. With that in mind, the Little Bomb's speed would pressure her into make a certain decision, and her choices would be to either take the attack head on, or mitigate it. Making it the stronger of the duo, he would empower it moreso than his next attack outright, but it would pin her in a position that she was almost guaranteed to get hit by the latter.
Before the dust cleared, Vanguard had the oversized air fan attached to his arm and spinning, the power of his chip arsenal flowing through it. The gust of wind set forth, a tornado of dark energy, unfurling at a much wider pace as it passed through a reticle he formed at the end of it, the power of the DarkSpreader granting it the width it needed to smash through multiple enemies.

Another bomb at her feet -- she was tempted to kick this one away as well, but Vanguard's verbal cue let her know that he was ready for that. She was pleased to see her tools being utilized, but didn't have much time to bask in that before basking in the explosion erupting at her feet; she had enough time to crack open a number of battle chips en masse that the explosion didn't harm her, but the fact was that she had been tagged nonetheless.
The reticle that it left on her body was like a beacon for the successive tornado, snaking its way toward her no matter which direction she tried to evade. She found a way to, though: holding her dagger forward, she removed the outer blade and cut through the incoming storm with its concealed blade, the perplexing interaction resulting in the twister dissipating in its tracks. The blade was resheathed instantly afterward, almost as if to remind them both that she hadn't really been forced to use it up until now.

She'd prevented her defeat, sure, but he'd shown he was beginning to understand his way around her technique. Of course, she still had emergency solutions for enemies that showed that understanding, one of which he'd seen now, but he could tell that was a layer deeper than she was willing to show for now. Her expectations of him weren't at all disappointed: there were really only a few ways she could respond to any of his attacks, mostly dictated by him. Because of that, and knowing in advance how she was forced to react to him, it was just a matter of trapping her in a lose-lose situation wherein she could certainly survive a few times, but she'd burn out in a fraction of the time than if he had just attacked her carelessly, as so many others had done in the past.

It was the agreement, after all, but she seemed happy with the outcome all the same. She'd let him finish accessing his next Advanced Dark Chip before making her leave, turning back on her way out to wave and give one last cheeky remark as her farewell.
