Lalonia got up.
There were few words exchanged yet each sentence left a blow against the other. This was a mental battle, no a mental war. How deep of a connection they must have in order to be hurt so easily just by standing in front of each other.
She walked up behind Merrill, resting a concerned hand on his shoulder. She was showing him to stay level, she knows it's hard, tears kept appearing on her face as well, but it served as a reminder of what they want to achieve.

There was frustration in Jake's own voice -- not with Merrill, but with himself.
" I can't change it. I can't ask you to forgive me for any of it. "
It was all exactly as Merrill had said, really. It was indeed the lack of trust that swung the sword, and it was shameful to confess that, had Merrill been the one held hostage, Jake didn't know for certain if his past self would have still swung anyway.
" I'm sorry. I know that doesn't cut it, but I don't know how else to atone than by at least saying it. "
What's done is done, as they say. There wasn't anything he could do to make it better. He knew that this didn't mean that it was water under the bridge -- the bridge was totally destroyed -- but the reality was that it defined who they both were now, and the decisive moment was upon them: were they forever allies, or were they forever foes because of it all.
" Where ever we go from here, just know that this isn't my apology. "
He paused just for a moment for that to sink in, and to emphasize what he said next.
" It's my repentance. "
There was an important distinction between the two: One was to amend an offense. The other was to never repeat it.

Finally. A breakthrough.
Merrill took a deep, shaky breath. Lalonia’s touch surprising him. But it was well received. His body slowly began radiating fewer sparks.
”... Thank you.”
He spoke quietly, rubbing his hands over his eyes.
”Finally. An apology...”
The anger in his voice began fading, moreso being replaced with sorrow.
Hearing Jake admit that he was sorry, that he accepted that he made a critical mistake is what he wanted to hear. Finally, more emotion in the man’s voice before him. Knowing that he would do whatever it took to accept and atone. He accepted the responsibility of his actions.
And right now, that is what Merrill needed.
”I... accept. While... I don’t agree with your choice... I now have a better understanding of why. And I needed that.”
He sighed, feeling exhausted from releasing his pent up emotions.
”I... I am disappointed. I can’t lie to you. I thought that you thought better of me.”
Now he looked down at his hand, clenching it tightly.
”I’m sorry that I wasn’t strong enough. I am sorry that I don’t meet your expectations. And that you don’t trust me. I’d be lying to say that I’m not feeling crushed by that.”
Another emotional defeat, in his eyes.
”But I suppose we both have to repent. I failed them too. And I have to repent for that. We both do.”
Looking back up, he locked eyes with Jake once more.
”But we are still family. So, as for my own vow of repentance... I will do everything I can to keep you from falling again. But should all else fail, Should you ever fall down that path again, sacrificing innocent people, playing god over their lives like that, and for the sake of those lost, I swear I will put an end to you myself.”
It killed him to say it. It really did, his voice cracking towards the end. He wasn’t sure if he believed himself or not. To add to that, He felt like he was going to pass out from the emotional wounds.
He accepted the burden. He would help carry his brother, even when he gave up hope. And maybe someday, he could earn Jake”s trust.

It helped to know that there was another person that would keep him in line. It provided him with another pillar to fall back to when his own discernment was shaken, much like it had been just now, with Var.
While some of Merrill's words still stung to hear, there were no falsehoods -- it wasn't the words that hurt, it was the truth. Warrior was a bit disappointed in himself as well, really, so if nothing else some of their feelings were quite mutual.
" I think others are playing God now, though. I still haven't fully understood their agenda yet. "
It wasn't any easier to determine if the greater good was down their road or not, but it was clearer that the ends didn't always justify the means.
Warrior's eyes finally went to Lalonia, fully acknowledging her presence now that the air was a little more clear.
" New friend? "

Merrill nodded. With Jake counting on him to make sure to hold him responsible, he finally felt like he had something else he had to fight for again: His brother. He sniffled, wiping away his tears, trying to refocus.
With others playing god, he knew it was only a matter of time before he had to fight again. While he accepted that, he had to admit, he was scared that he wasn't ready. Not that he had time to dwell on that, as Jake had brought up Lalonia.
"Yes. She had found me while I had been training, right before the crimson blast rippled through the skies... And all of those people began dying."
He stepped to the side.
"Miss Lalonia, meet my brother, Warrior. Warrior, miss Lalonia."
Turning to her, he bowed.
"Miss Lalonia... I apologize that you had to witness this. It... It's been a tough time. And I am sorry to put you through that."
Turning back to Warrior, he sighed. He crossed his arms one last time.
"In order to put this behind us, brother, I have a favor to ask. One that actually serves two purposes."
He looked over to Lalonia, contemplating something for a moment and then back.
"Where I come from, as a dispute such as this, where we both have to atone, we have a custom. We call them "Sanguipecnosris" or "atonement duels." We fight each other one on one, to draw a small pool of blood from the other. This signifies a bond between us upon which we have agreed to pay for. In this case, we fight for those we have lost. Do you accept this challenge? It is one of the few... strange... traditions that my culture follows."
He looked around them briefly.
"I also am curious, if we generate enough energy with attacks, could we cause a rift to follow after one of those "gods" you speak of?"
Turning to Lalonia, he bowed.
"I know that we are recently acquainted, miss Lalonia. I consider you a friend, and am thankful for all you have done for me recently. I know this may seem like a very strange thing of me to request, but I ask that you not judge me too harshly."
He couldn't help but worry that she would judge him harshly or flee, which was strange. Normally that didn't bother him too much, but he was asking a lot from her. From both of them, really.

#s://i~imgur~com/dk4CQm0~png Warrior smiled finally -- the dispute settled at long last. He always knew it'd come to trading blows, but somehow this way was much more pleasant than the alternative that he feared it would have come to.
" ... "
He nodded to Lalonia as she was introduced; an inaudible greeting. His attention returned to Merril immediately afterward as he continued with his request.
" Sanguipecnosris, huh. Really just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it. "
His smirk after the quip was as jestful as ever -- the lightening of the scene now a poetic contrast to the heavy atmosphere just seconds prior. He drew his sword at the request, the answer being quite obvious given their history.
" Blood for blood it is, then. Though I think we should avoid pursuit for now -- I know for certain the task will take more than just the three of us. "
He counted Lalonia among them already. Between him and Merrill: Warrior had proven to be the less powerful after their previous duel. While Merrill and Remnant would always come to a draw, and even with Remnant's assistance, Jake would still reach a draw against Merrill, his human body did match up to a Navi's specs last time they crossed blades without Remnant's intervention.
As for their enemies: Var had made sure they couldn't investigate the Crimson Portal that led to the Crimson Satellite, so that one was off the table. Their next mark wasn't clear either, but the stranger in the Arbor Woods implied that some of the incidents were isolated events rather than all being related, which checked out with Var's explanation of everything too, in terms of where responsibilities fell among the fallen networks.
That mystery would be pursued later, though. For now, his atonement required his focus.

with a nod, Merrill looked at Warrior. He couldn't stop himself, a small smile began to cross his face, especially with the quick quip and smirk coming from Warrior.
Turning to Lalonia, his smile became gentle, and soft.
"Don't worry, we won't go to far with this."
He leaned forward slightly.
"Watch and learn. You may find that there's always more to being a "supporter" than you think."
He took a couple of steps away from her, making sure to give the two of them enough space to go at it without putting Lalonia in harms way.
"One last thing. Don't expect me to go easy on you. There's still some aggression to slap some sense into you!"
Raising his hands forward, the white blade of Life and the black blade of Death appeared in his hands. Both Warrior and Lalonia would feel the changes in him as his body adapted and began utilizing the energies of those who had lived and died.
Light flared up around him, his body gaining a light shine, crimson sparks now sparking all around him. The immense energy causing the temperature to change when being in close proximity, the sun itself shining slightly brighter, should one look up at it. With a wave of his hand, crimson sparks sped towards Warrior, before Merrill imbudes the black blade, throwing it at his target. From there, Merrill seems to vanish and appear from behind, crimson eye glowing moreso than norma, a large black scythe in his hand.
"Think this might be the first time you've seen this weapon..."
His voice carried his own tone, but more than that this time...

Warrior appeared to remain still as the sparks and the sword all came flying toward him, but what could best be described as "hollow after-images of him" -- entities that took on Warrior's appearance, but that had faded colors and seemed more like bodies of air wrapped in a semi-transparent shell that resembled him -- stepped out from his body and deflected each of the blows.
The attacks weren't neutralized completely, but it was clear that they brought with them no physical harm when they made impact with Warrior.
" I've got new tricks myself. "
The "real" Warrior that Merrill teleported behind seemed to be one of the after-images as well. The experience was difficult to describe: had it been an after-image the entire time, or did it just suddenly become one? If Merrill and Lalonia would try to remember which they had seen first, they'd have difficulty pinpointing it, as if the scene were unwritten and then rewritten -- as if, by some manner of quantum physics, that "real" Warrior was both the real and the fake.
The "true" Warrior, the "real real" one, was the voice they had just heard, coming from behind Merrill now. He stepped back around to the front of Merrill as he explained the vexing interaction they had just witnessed.
" To a certain degree, I've been given the ability to manipulate time. "
He extended his arm to direct their attention to his after-image as he continued; the "fake real" him.
" At first I took your blows head on, but was worse for wear than I expected to be. So I rewound the event: dialed back the Cyber World's entire clock by a few seconds, then moved out of the way when it played forward again. "
Indeed, he stood before them now unscathed, and his sword fully charged of glowing energy to boot, unlike it had been a second ago.
" It'll feel confusing, because you'll remember both events despite only one of them actually happening -- your memory will attempt to make sense of what you saw by changing what you remember. That's why thinking back to it now doesn't make much sense, but the more you think it over, the more sense your mind is able to make of it. It isn't so bad when you're given the time to do that, but when you aren't... "
They'd realize that the Warrior talking also appeared to be an after-image now -- better referred to as an "anomaly" -- and they would know that he'd repeated this technique again, but this time in a more complex manner, as they were about to witness.
Their memories were beginning to change again: the first "fake real" Warrior didn't just stand there when Merrill sent the sparks and sword flying toward him. Now, they'd remember seeing him swinging back with a charged sword. The second "real real" Warrior vanished now, leaving only the first with an uncharged, "spent" weapon. Whether or not Merrill deflected the attacks was a mystery for his own recollection now: Warrior had already struck long ago.
" It doesn't make much sense, I know, but the pieces are there to be put together. "
And putting them together was difficult, but the answer was more simple than he made it sound: the reality was that Warrior rewound the fight and changed the short "history" that they had witnessed. The alternate outcomes that blurred the truth didn't matter: the current and active outcome was that Warrior swung at Merrill immediately after he threw his black sword and immediately before he vanished to reappear behind him with the scythe in hand.
Everything that happened afterward was just exposition of the mind-boggling procedure -- their minds saw every outcome as it happened, but their memories slowly attuned to the "true" outcome when the time skipping had finally stopped.
" I shared my secret so you'd be prepared for it: I'm not exclusive for time-mingling. Now let's see what secrets your new weapon has. "
He had indeed never seen the scythe before. Warrior had exposed his own bag of tricks, so now it was Merrill's turn.

They each had felt the simple attacks land. However, seeing multiple afterimages of Warrior threw Merrill and Life completely. However, Death was not as easily fooled. He remained quiet at first, keeping his thoughts and watching intently.
Hearing Warrior behind him, he threw himself forward with a flip and a twist, as to suddenly not have one of these... afterimages behind him. However, something was different when he landed. The original Warrior had a charged sword.
"Wait, when did.."
He only had what felt like a second to listen to Warrior explain what was happening to him, before raising his hand, gathering a large portion of crimson energy, mixed with light and heat directly in front of his body.
But then, He was attacking Warrior again, but something was different. There was no after image where he first attacked! Instead, Warrior was swinging back with the charged sword!
Death intervened, forcing their body to vanish in a haze of black and crimson energy, the crimson energy, mixed with light and heat absorbing each of Warrior's heavy blows.
"darn it boy, Don't be such an embarrassment. Do I have to save your hide every time?"
No one would hear his words other than Merrill as they existed for a split second, in absolute darkness, completely severed from where they were.
"It's starting to make sense. Hmph. I think I get it... Do you understand yet, boy?"
To Warrior and Lalonia it would feel as if any and all traces of him had vanished, as if his existence hadn't been there in the first place, even though the energy was still protecting that spot, as if...
Then, as if hardly any time passed, Merrill appeared again, as the shield and the aura of energies vanished from absorbing the final blow.
As the after-image explaining everything changed, Merrill had finished swinging with the scythe again, completing the cycle.
Merrill took a deep breath, replaying events again over and over a few times, his mind replaying everything again and again. But during that last exchange, something was different... He had managed to follow Warrior's attacks, but something was different about them. The after-images were distracting, that's for sure. It felt as if Warrior had reached a new level of speed, in one sense, but that wasn't exactly correct either.
"Manipulating time, eh?"
He let his mind replay the last set of events once more. As Warrior reached out to swing with his charged sword, he felt a subtle change, one he had been familiar with in the past.... Even one he had caused.
"His life force."
"Heh. You are learning. That's one way."
Merrill nodded. He started piecing things together. He was lucky that Death had interviened, or he would have completely fallen behind in the Sanguipecnosris.
"That's... Incredible. I must admit, you never cease to amaze me! Your training must have been excruciatingly difficult to master that. I am both humbled and so impressed, finding words is difficult."
He couldn't help but smile. All those jokes from their shared past about who was faster and stronger. In that category, Warrior was, and almost always would be, faster.
"I take it you have begun to understand why i do not believe in an absolute limitation? Because you clearly surpassed yourself from the last time we fought!"
Shifting his stance, Merrill held the scythe out, sharp edge forward. However, this would not be the only weapon that Warrior or Lalonia would see. His two primary weapons hovered and oscillated around his body, just off the edge of the crimson energy and shoulder height.
"I see it now! It DOES make sense!"
The white blade of Life gained a shiny, bright light blue hue.
"I believe in you, Merrill."

Merrill stretched out his wings, each white wing glowing with a warm gold light. He spun the scythe in his hand, energy beginning to whip around them. The sunlight even began to warp around them, as if it was sucked into the crimson sparks that flashed all across the field of battle.
"Here's a new trick!
His smile vanished, replaced with a look of laser focus. His eyes glowing with intent, he vanished energy exploding outward brightly just from his movements alone. He dashed behind Warrior, making his presence known with a loud grunt. But as one would see, he was already gone by the time a large black lance appearing out of thin air, striking with Warrior's chest. Upon impact, black and crimson flames burst forth, an intense heat instantly coating the vicinity.
Then, Merrill would appear directly in front of Warrior, [his hair gaining a dark tint, his armor also feeling similar effects, even with the shining solar energy. thrusting his hand forward, two flashes of golden light, as two more weapons, yellow rapiers, darted forward from near point blank range. Flashing bright from their mark should they miss. With a hop, his position changed again, swinging his free hand down, two black, green and brown daggers coming down on Warrior from yet a different angle. Each strike was expressed with full of vigor, of a feeling of life itself.
Switching tactics, Merrill flew straight up, materializing his two-hand claymore. The oddly colored black and white blade vibrated with light, as he peaked roughly fifty yards above the ground. He dive bombed down, noting exactly where Warrior would have landed, vanishing, before striking the blade in a cleaving motion from the side. His hands new encased in black and crimson energy, like claws, but only for a split second.
He spun in place, the large two-hand disappearing as instead, he spun the scythe in an arc, attempting to carve Warrior into two halves. He flipped forward, striking down on the ground, his whole body being elevated from the impact, as a massive shock-wave of crimson energy blasted forward, rippling along the ground, shaking the land and leaving a small indent along it's traveled path.
Merrill landed, flipping to give himself some space from the incoming strikes that he knew would be coming. He spared a quick glance at Lalonia, making sure she was safe, unharmed by the duel, and that Lumena was making sure to regulate the temperature around her to make sure they were comfortable. He made sure to keep generating the live energy around his body strongly, hiding some of the changes his body was undergoing as he went. He did everything he could to hide the fact that using these powers altered his body slightly as the battle continued.

Warrior calmly placed his sword behind him, almost as if sheathing the weapon on his back, to block the spear from the rear. Merrill had a tendency to strike from the back each time he vanished, so it didn't require him to even look to know where it was coming from.
The rest took a bit more movement on his part, but Warrior's feet stood firm as if he were planted in place, relying only on his weapon to deflect the incoming attacks rather than moving out of the way of any of them at all.
Teal and Gold sparks spiraled away from each clash of their weapons, familiar colors at opposition. But the crimson sparks were new, revealing a side of Merrill that Warrior had never known.
When all was said and done, he seemed rather composed, but needed time to gather his energy again. There were no Temporal-shenanigans this time, just a single stroke of the blade as Merrill made space to keep him at bay for a moment. Light erupted from the cavity of Warrior's blade to signify his charge had begun, but it also bathed his body like a veil to the flares Merrill was emitting. Their heat was certainly enough to get to him if not addressed.

To no one's surprise, Warrior blocked each of his strikes. as much as he hated to admit it, Merrill was beginning to get excited. Even at his current strength, Warrior managed to meet his expectations, and in it's own way, exceed them.
"Splendid! You really have surpassed what your believed limitations were!"
Then, he spun the scythe one last time, vanishing, striking at warrior from point blank range, just in time to take Warrior's strike straight to the face.
With that, his own blood dripped on the ground. There was a flash of white light, and Merrill returned, all weapons vanishing, his own body already healed of wounds. He had looked just as his own, normal self again. The crimson energy vanished, and in fact, Warrior would even notice after the strike, hit or not, his own woulds would be healed as well.
"Factumes!"
He bowed to Warrior.
"It is done."

Lalonia watched the spectacle in awe akin to a kid in a candy store. The consistent clashing, the sheer force of their battle was intense and thrilling. When it came to a conclusion, she let out a sigh of relief. It was nice that the built up stress was for nothing as they have seemed to do what boys do best: speak with their fists.
"Warrior, I apologize for the delayed response, but it's a pleasure to meet you."
She once again gave a small curtsy to introduce herself. But something still bothered her. Something left not fully answered.
"If I may, I must ask. If you are not responsible for this tragedy, why didn't you stop one of the culprits from escaping?"

Warrior was a bit caught off by the point blank attack, but was able to perform temporal magics to properly fend it off. The first timeline had hit him dead on -- rewinding and replaying, he blocked it in the current timeline. Like a anomalies before, Merrill and Lalonia would remember both events, but would understand the meaning behind that as to why Warrior was able to react to it in time.
He had spilled more than a little blood throughout the ordeal, but his wounds were covered now, courtesy of Merrill. The drops of Jake's blood on the ground had stark contrast to a Navi's regular "replicated" blood -- human DNA, even just small traces of it in this digital body, didn't sit as naturally in the Cyber World's environment.
" You as well, Lalonia. "
He returned her greeting verbally now, rather than just was a nod as he had before.
" The one you saw earlier was Var -- one of Juno's Reaverkings. I met a more docile one in Sharo, and then a more informative stranger there afterwards. None of their allegiances are perfectly clear to me even still; the full picture's still being painted. "
It was hard to justify letting the crime go unpunished just on account of information gathering, even he could admit that. But he went on to speak his more honest opinion about it, which further explained why confronting Var still didn't feel quite right.
" I've got demons I still struggle with. Crossroads have always left me stiff -- I don't want to be caught fighting on the wrong side thinking that it was the right one, again. Gray areas are just my kryptonite, and that's the color that was painted here. "

Merrill nodded, following what Warrior was saying.
"So. We don't know exactly where these.. "Reaverkings" allegiances lie, do we?"
He sighed.
"So, we don't know if their with that guy, Rosso or if they have their own agenda or even don't care. That said, I haven't run into many others since I hid away. Seeing Element City destroyed and dealing with escaping the fleet of reaverbots in the forest net was difficult enough. What had happened in the other areas?"

She took an almost sheepish stance as she continued, and stared at her feet.
"I apologize.. I'm not really much use here. I don't know any of the current events of the net, I'm still new despite my version history."
She gazed around once more at the destruction, it still hurt. So much sadness. So much suffering.
"If these.. Reaverkings are playing games with who they side with, maybe they are no more than common arms dealers. I suppose Sharo.. is um.. another area correct? They are in multiple places at once, so I'm lead to assume that they've always been around as something is going wrong. It sounds to me like they're waiting for a perfect moment. Not necessarily to strike but.."
Her voice trailed off as she looked away. At this point she was just letting her mind run on auto as she though of different various possibilities, but she knew too little of the situation. She didn't even know what Creamland is.
"I'm sorry, the best I can do is offer my support. Again, I'm hardly knowledgeable in this world and I don't want to try to throw off any investigation with my baseless thoughts."
