The shadow's eyes lock onto Mistair as she gives her analysis, glaring at her during her explanation. So that's what it took to pull her into the fight? And in this position no less.
With Mistair reaching the window before he can, the shadow drops his feet and skids to a halt, now between his two foes with his main exit blocked. All of those years in the shadows, and this is how his introduction goes? Have to turn this around fast, but that one was making it hard.
Muscles tightened and prepared, the shadow's body flashes again and his pike rises in preparation, but this time he doesn't wait for an attack to come. With one sweeping motion, he performs a full spin on the spot and releases a spiral blade-wave from his weapon in all directions at once. While not overly strong, it does provide sweeping coverage across the field that might be difficult to deal with for Vanguard... but not for Mistair.
With the end of his attack launched, the shadow again looses his feet and dashes under his wave in Mistair's direction. But this time he rises from his dash at the last moment directly in front of Mistair, his armor still flashing, and takes his own hit in the back. The kinetic energy of the wave is absorbed, empowered, and re-directed back to the shadow's pike, which comes across like an axe onto Mistair's position. The result would be a far more devastating attack for the tactician to deal with, but also a tremendously widened gap in the hole that the shadow had previously opened up, creating an exit-point substantially harder for Mistair to goal tend in the process.

"Something sort of like this, actually."
As he went into motion to do spiral blade-wave, he would notice that the goal keeper had launched herself toward his direction now to meet him early. And in doing so she held out her hand as the veil formed as she caught the wave before it could continue its plummet, but just before he would reach after his commitment to dash toward her just enough to still be in dangerously close proximity of her. And rather than do an offensive strike as his armor was flashing, he would find his legs frozen over solid where he was now, revealing what she planned to do now to the unknown shadow as well now that the fight had been brought to them proper. She then would use her arm to bring around the attack he planned on receiving earlier around with her now on top of him. Instead of it attacking like a brought down stick as it appeared to be, it would surge with electricity and snake about instead, coiling around him from a different angle and reinforcing itself so that it could complete the capture process.

that was a familiar move, and told the shadow volumes in one moment. Denied the chance to absorb his own attack, he prepares to dash backwards, but falls on his back with a slam, gasping as he does so. The sudden whip would be an unexpected change of pace, as would the surge of energy that shocks him badly as a result. However, Mistair would be in for a surprise as well at this point. The first is how quickly he manages to twist against the bindings to loosen them just enough to slip free, displaying a total immunity to the attempted paralysis, and the second would be the fact that his armor had never stopped flashing through the entire assault.
For the first time, the Navi's voice lets loose with a yell as the kinetic energy from his fall, the power of Mistair's subduing assault, and the electrical surge from her whip are all channeled into the shadow's pike, loosing as a vertical wave that starts at his feet to break the freeze, and rises to the ceiling in a solid white wave of destruction.
His target was lost, and his options were spent. He'd have no choice but to use his last option for this encounter.
A malevolent feeling rises in the capsule, piercing the hearts of both Mistair and Vanguard: pure evil, without regard or remorse. The feeling alone was shocking to say the least, but it wasn't without source. Beneath the shadow, a black hole expands outward into reality. He gives Mistair one last glare before kicking off and falling into this hole, entering the depths of Black Earth as his escape route before closing the portal behind himself, escaping his unfortunate encounter before being captured.

With his movement she would be forced to disengage further as the power erupted into that pillar of light. But before she could aim to about this further, that burst of pure evil would be released. And the black hole that was there to offer the Shadow his asylum from them had opened. As he was offering one last glare, he would be able to make out her face thanks to that when he was. Perhaps a reaction that was unexpected as well. It wasn't anger or frustration, or surprise or joy.
It was something akin to... interest? And she was peering into it keenly, being able to see that her hand was starting to move to do something. The motion felt deliberate, as if it had been planned for an eternity. But it froze, as if the motion she wanted it to do was either a motion she did not know or stopped herself from doing. Her hand would fall back to her side, standing in silence for a time before she would motion with her hand to have the ice form over the window to seal it closed and stop them from needing to hold on or be sent soaring into the great beyond.
"...Or something like that but without the failure."

His deliberate actions were accentuated by his progression from one goal to the next. As one task failed, that opportunity lost and his adversaries on high alerts, he shifted gears to a new goal. While they were still weary of his previous endeavor, he changed tactics. This was a smart and calculating individual; a pleasure to deal with that Vanguard hadn't felt in a long time, other than Var himself.
Vanguard focused on analyzing his moves, then, and preparing his own defense. Using the debris and the momentum caused by the vacuum of space, their assailant tried to collect more energy and use it against him, and as Vanguard prepared to defend, Mistair intercepted, catching the attacker from exiting out of the window. With him now shoved between Vanguard's cannon and Mistair's power, Vanguard raised his cannon with the intent of making a move, but not before Mistair made her own plans.
The attacker unleashed a sweeping strike that was easy enough for Vanguard to duck out of the way of, his reflexes much stronger as his already potent vision had evolved, and as the attacker dashed forward, Vanguard could almost see the intent before it came to fruition. Preparing his own answer, but Mistair acting a bit faster, Vanguard watched as Mistair interposed herself between the would-be attack and his attempts at absorbing his own blow. So, when his assailers refused to give him energy, he could make his own, then?
Mistair caught him, repurposed his own energy, and attempted to capture him outright, but he maneuvered out of the paralysis and then erupted a column of white destruction against the ice trying to encase him.
That was when Vanguard felt it: Malevolence given purpose, darker and even more powerful than the evil of Forte's presence itself. That portal opened up, and Vanguard felt that presence and almost quailed entirely; but it was only open for an instant. He almost missed Mistair's movement, but it wasn't the first time he had seen her almost do something instinctively and then stop herself from it.
The danger of the scenario gone, after Mistair closed the portal with a sheet of ice again, Vanguard released the sword he had planted into the ground and relaxed for a moment, trying to breathe through the feeling of perversity given presence. Thankfully, it left quickly as the portal was closed.
He sighed, slumping back down where he had planted himself. He had purposefully not engaged with Zane due to being exhausted from the confrontation with Var; he was lucky to have just kept himself standing in that encounter just now. In whatever case, he was now alone with Mistair again, their previous conversations, and the implications of her knowledge of this individual that even Vanguard couldn't see, hanging in the air like a cloud.
"Your analysis of new enemies is keen, too, you know. I was seeing what you knew before I applied my own quick analysis of it, and it pretty much added up. I've told you before that I appreciate your insight.
". . . as for our previous conversation, I can't say I disagree with you. I've noticed their particular opinions, but it isn't my fault, per se, that Armiger and Centurion have their purposes, and I have mine. I didn't design them, and I don't have the knowledge necessary to redesign them, like you could. All I can do is help them do what they were made to do to the best of their ability, and try my best to keep them safe amidst the chaos in the process. I of course lament the nature of their design; it's demeaning." He pauses her to refer to the band around his wrist; Var's current shape. "And this is temporary, if I have any say in the matter. Moving forward, as previously discussed, this is the most logically sound option for maintaining Var's support.
". . . But that doesn't change how they will emotionally see it. Just as his emotions would have compromised him, their emotions will compromise us working together. Do you foresee any opportunity for compromise? We've come so far to risk needing to be on our own again. That defeats the purpose of the efforts put in by Var, to pass on the torch to someone new. My way forward was different, because I didn't feel the need to do it alone." He let that hang in the air again, sounding somewhat defeated and disappointed in himself. At the end of the day, though, he couldn't change his own view of the scenario. It was sound to him.
"There is also still the matter of what you know of the opposing forces. Their medium, and what you know of your own connection to them, all things considered. What specifically are you, Mistair, in relation to what they are? Are you one in the same?"

It only made sense to be worn down from constant conflict. In which case they could adjust and take a different approach next, but before any of that was considering the fight that just took place. She did nod in agreement for the sake of her analysis, as it was true that she had contributed plenty in terms of that in their battles. It was just that the others always took center stage and had their own takes on how to deal with whatever came their way and handled the analysis between themselves. She just happened to stay on guard in an area that technically by all rights still belonged to their enemy rather than relaxing her guard at any stage here. They may have assigned the duty to Var, but it never meant to just believe their enemies would not be thorough and at least keep an eye on them regardless in the event Var failed. They had no reason to trust in a brutalized tool, simply put.
"I will say for analysis in this case at least while the appearance was shrouded, the approach was plain to see if not unorthodox. I merely looked for the obvious after your first engagement and his continued approach."
She had merely gone off of what those obvious deductions produced and responded accordingly. Each move that was made were moves available for a specific means, and anyone who had those means often veered in the direction of using them in certain ways. Assuming their goal was to be optimal about it, something like this would be the result so long as you approached them swiftly and surely. In a way, just as their unknown assailant was merciless and sure in his actions, if one applied the same back you could accomplish similar results. Be prepared for your own backlash and strike in a sure fashion, and you could accomplish similar results. Putting that matter aside, the topic of their previous conversation left the others up in the air.
"The Armored Destroyer hasn't been big on 'small talk', so how emotionally charged he is will be something determined when addressing him directly. Emotions are just as unpredictable as they can be predictable. Faith is a morally correct woman. I don't think at least that she can see this from any kind of good moral angle, but she won't be the worst judge in this event. That one should be obvious on who holds the least amount of love for this sort of thing. The predictable one here is Genesis. The only compromise I can foresee there is him agreeing to not try to strike you down on sight at any given opportunity until this is all squared away. The rest will depend on who all can be convinced with truth or convinced with fabrication in order to assist otherwise. But remember again that secrets kept are the same sharp blades to be used against later."
She was still against conceit, so would prefer that if they would search for new partners in this battle that they did so openly and with their truth in the open. There were some who wouldn't care about what was done or those who would rationalize it away all the same. Not everyone was the same on the subject matter. But what would always be sound to Vanguard would always be insanity to others. In that he was right to sound defeated, as it wasn't something that would be changed without changing points of view. He would have to understand that just as he was firm in his belief that he was right, the same deserved to be applied to others asked about the same. They had every right to assert their beliefs over it just the same. What decision they came to after that was up to them just as well. Just as...
"As for whether the haze on my own compromised relations with them go, that's still as hazy as before. We can assume their medium is the same and they simply are cloaking themselves, much like our shrouded one had until he fought back harder. All the same if we were one in the same, why would I deign to be here rather than with them? Why would they have to go out of their way with subterfuge with the amount of strength one of their individuals possess? Amusement? I don't imagine concern for casualties would be their problem either assuming they're looking at it from a logical point of view, so not that either."

Vanguard was realizing that asking for Mistair's analysis was really just requesting if his own were accurate enough. Every thought and angle he came from, she seemed to not only find his thoughts but further develop them. They thought along the same train of thought.
It only made sense, given how well they got along up until now.
As for her response to his question, cloaking abilities were not unheard of. Rosso had displayed some semblance of power at times, before he, too, developed a complete lack of any signature. It was strange, surely, but not out of the question to presume that they were either a Net-based or Wave-based medium, just cloaking their power otherwise. Subterfuge didn't meet their needs, no, she was right, there . . . so it of course offered only one last option that Vanguard could see from the scenario.
He decided to keep that idea to himself, as, ultimately, if that were the case, it was the best possible scenario. ". . . You're right, as always," he said simply, hanging his head and chuckling. Lifting his vision back up to her, Vanguard brought himself up to a stand again, his power thankfully rapidly restoring. "At the very least, then, that means we need to be on our way to Sharo to touch base with the others; alternatively, I can send a message to the overlord again and see if they've moved, so as to prevent a wild goose chase."
Deciding that was the best choice of action, Vanguard went ahead and pulled up the screen that he had used some time ago, now, to put together a message to send to Genesis.

She offered him a reassuring smile as he was back on his feet. She wouldn't say she was always right seeing as she slipped on capturing someone not too long ago, but it was nice that things were still alright between them. Sending the message instead of heading directly to Sharo at this point was good too as it meant they could avoid missing each other this way just by asking where they were. And it wasn't as if Vanguard had a means to contact their other missing member, though he was likely alright given he typically was fine while being his lone wolf self. It would keep him active, but perhaps not all that successful if he got into a fight again if Silver Horn was anything to go by. Still... all of those thoughts aside for now.
"The message should be the best approach. He isn't exactly slow when he's left to his own devices. And while we wait for his response, let me see Armiger for a moment."
It would be a curious request no doubt given she only asked for Armiger but not Centurion as well. There was an obvious reason she felt for that, but she was fine explaining that just as well when she would be asked about it.

He expected that she already knew his assertion of her always being right had different intentions than its literal meaning, so he didn't bring that up. Still, her request as he finished the message and sent it was interesting, to him. He had immediate concerns, in honestly, as he glanced up from the screen to look at her through raised eyes. Given what she had just displayed to Var, it wasn't illogical for him to be concerned, given the situation.
Given what she had displayed since their joining forces, however, it would be illogical to not trust her judgment and her intentions, here, as well. His coils rearranged and aligned, as he ejected Armiger's navi crest and held it out for her. Even as she was expecting it, he couldn't help but ask the question. "Why specifically Armiger, and not Centurion, as well?"

She would take the navi crest in hand, looking over it for a brief time. It wasn't very long, a minute at most before she would hand it back to him. It didn't appear as though she had done or changed anything, but she was able to explain why she had asked for him for the time she had without a problem.
"Genesis was held up at Sharo before we fought Blu. Armiger was with him but never confirmed what actually held them up, so I was just confirming what it was through Armiger."
Centurion was always with them while Armiger was with Genesis. Seeing as Vanguard was making the most optimal use of him that only made sense to have him with the Overlord whenever he could. Armiger was never detached until Zane had done so now, even when they were in that camp undersea. It just meant that she was able to see how forthright Genesis had been just as she had convinced Vanguard to be now.
"And it added up just fine. They were held up, no thanks to the new arrival."

Vanguard watched her examine Armiger, and then listened to her explanation. It made sense, then - through her analysis of his data, he would be able to figure out where he had been, in a way that would access even what Armiger wouldn't have remembered, and Vanguard wouldn't have thought to do. He had known that Genesis was held up; when he didn't speak much on it, he was curious, but also considered that it was just an unfortunate error on the Network's part, or their way back.
All things considered, it made more sense that their new visitor had been a part of it. He shook his head, looking at Mistair; what was even the point of their own attempt at telling the truth, if Genesis would act under cloaked lies, as well? It frustrated him, the necessity of it all.
". . . Very well," he said simply, looking at Armiger's Navi Crest for a long while after she had completed her work with it. A thought came to mind, just then. ". . . Genesis is opposed to Navis being tools, but if that's all they are he won't forego the opportunity to abuse them. He has seemed . . . changed, I think i the word I want to use, since the fight in Sharo against Nero and Rosso. He lost something, I feel like, but my memories after the third reconfiguring of my previously nonexistent ribcage is rather hazy, I must admit." He proffered these thoughts without much prompting, adding in a bit of humor at the end to lighten the mood, but, ultimately, his statement was going somewhere.
". . . I don't want that for them. They do deserve more, in the same way that, when it can be permitted, Var deserves more than this," he went on, holding up his wrist to reference the band. "I . . . I cannot convince their creators to make them into anything more than what they wanted them to be. I do not have the skills to make them into something more." He looked, then, to Mistair.
"You do."

It looked like he was thinking about it now that the meeting was inevitable. And he also could understand why she would check with Armiger if the case was that Genesis likewise had similar thoughts about his dealings with others. Vanguard knew just as well that he wouldn't be the first or last person to choose a veil of secrecy when presented with the option. But really he wasn't even unique in that case. Almost everyone active now were carrying their own veils of secrecy. Whether or not those secrets were spilled by others besides the secret keeper themselves was something else entirely. But for now the topic of discussion was why the Overlord had become not visibly changed, albeit his actions at least carried a different weight to them than they had before Sharo.
"If there is anything Genesis hates most on his list of things he hates, it would be Navis being turned into tools. He can't fix those tools once they become as such either, so if the person carrying those tools shows a lack of regard for how they are used, he obviously will see no reason to show them any more care or respect than he perceives their owner to. He can't save them even if he were to relieve them of their owner, after all. Though with how often your ribs are removed, you might be better off removing them before the battle yourself at this rate."
She couldn't help but smile at that idea, seeing as his rib-cage often was removed anyway before the fight was over. Aside from the humor, the grudge Genesis had for those who would do such a thing was practically all-consuming to the point where even Genesis himself questioned whether or not he was even honoring her soul with his hatred. But it wasn't as if he could simply let it go either. And so he wandered in search of that answer, and gathered strength for a purpose many would assume to be selfish and self-centered. But all she could see was someone who had slowly but surely become disillusioned after things had gone so wrong time and again. Even now there were several things Genesis had chosen to neglect, like what happened with Pandemic for example. He hadn't stopped to discuss any of those things, only moving ever forward. He couldn't stop because he needed to move as quickly as he could in order to regain what he lost. The longer he took, the worse things could potentially turn for him.
"As for what he's lost, well... I suppose you wouldn't have paid it that much mind actually. It isn't my place to tell his tale on his behalf. But he's been rather tame about it all said, which by all rights means you should consider it more frightening than if he was responding with his usual unbridled, unquenchable fury or spiral of depression."
It meant that he had a plan this time. And one that would not end well for those that had caused the transgression in the least. With his vindictive nature it meant that nothing short of the oblivion of his adversary, Nero, would satisfy him. At the very least Genesis may prolong your ride into oblivion, but he never looked for alternatives besides it so far. So that at least was still well in hand. As for the last matter at hand, Vanguard wasn't wrong on this front either. Vanguard understood his creator's point of view and that was itself its own dilemma for him. One that he had avoided for the time being and one that probably hit a snare or two given they undeniably were influenced by the global assault as well. And one that he would need to decide how he wanted to confront sooner or later.
"The only way you could convince them would be through results. But the only results you could present now that they care about are success and failure. And for them, that means one of two things. The first and better outcome would be their continued existence. The second and worse outcome would be their creators issuing their closure for being ineffective. But before I do anything, you need to ask them what they want. If they are more than tools, then they should have the right to decide what form they live in. Simply because they are a spear or a suit of armor doesn't relegate them to merely a tool. They can still think and act of their own volition. Mind you it wouldn't make them excuse Var, but it's otherwise a step that the two of them should be allowed to make themselves."
The issue would instead lie in whether or not they were allowed to do as much. And if Vanguard would compare how Genesis seemingly treated Armiger, it was treatment that should have aligned with a familiar behavior to him. If how Genesis treated Armiger appeared abusive, it was simply because he had mirrored the treatment that he perceived was expected of them. They were allowed to augment, but little more than that unless they had deemed it otherwise fitting.
"It doesn't have to be an immediate decision either. Neither of them have exactly been allowed much free thought after all, something I think Centurion would have something to say about with what happened just before fighting Var. It was for his safety, but you could have explained it or simply allowed him to stand at the sidelines like the Armored Destroyer had."

The image of using some sort of device to remove his ribcage, or just outright smashing his own fist through a reticle into his chest, brought a smile to Vanguard's face; if it were possible to do so safely, he surely would, as he was quite tired of the amount of pain that having a constantly regrowing ribcage brought with it.
As for her comment on what he lost, he understood that it wasn't her tale to tell, even if she knew much about it. That was Genesis' personal business, much as his endeavors with his original creator were his. Her analysis of his personality, Vanguard not knowing much about the Onyx Overlord, made him think along the same lines she was, even if she didn't share those out loud - to be on a path separate from his normal circuitous behavior, he must have something planned that is giving him focus. Given his . . . disposition, Vanguard couldn't imagine anything more than the most destructive of impulses giving Genesis clarity.
Communications with the outside world were difficult at the time. For whatever reason, his company hadn't reached out to him. He hadn't been in touch with them since the trip into Sharo, due to the difficult nature of communication lines, there. He had been so caught up in the moment, he had honestly forgotten to check in with them, now that the chaos was at least at bay for a moment.
In truth, he were a much simpler navi than what one would expect for the digital CEO of a company. Navis like Gate faired much better with that title and expectation; Vanguard wasn't that kind of leader. He left the managerial processes to the people that created him; or, rather, reformatted him after he was first deleted. With everything that had transpired, he saw the value of his connection to the human world, as he felt it gave him more of a moral stance than perhaps Genesis did, but he wasn't sure if his current connection to it was the best suited for him. Humans that captured his creator and made use of his creations to further their research . . . all, ultimately, just another end with the means of violence, subterfuge, and conquering to meet it. As a combat navi, his ultimate purpose was to forward the cause and stand to fight when no one else could, or for those that could not . . .
. . . would he be able to find a purpose, in Var's ideal world? He found himself looking at that band, and wondering, if Var's ideal world, as much of a fantastical utopia as it may sound, ever came to pass, what would remain for them? To defend those in need of defending, to fight for those that could not fight . . . what when that was no longer necessary? He had proven that his abilities could be used for more than just combat, but, he wondered now, even moreso than before, if he was willing to continue being at the beck and call of this particular group of humans.
". . . It doesn't excuse it, but the explanation for that, at least, was that I was in the moment. I hadn't even considered it for anything more than trying to keep him and everyone else safe . . . his safety shouldn't be mine to dictate, though. In that way, we must accept that we all still have our flaws."
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, centering himself and calming his rampant thoughts for a moment. When next he opened them, he shifted the coils on his wrists and pulled away Centurion's Navi Crest, as well. Indicating to her that she could activate Armiger, he engaged Centurion, the electrical spear forming from the navi crest and arcing surges of energy through the air.
He waited for Mistair to engage Armiger, setting Centurion up so that he could wield himself. The electrical form of the navi equipment took shape. It was a massive expenditure of resources to take on such a form, and was made that way by design to make his uses as a weapon far more powerful in return. It was a leash, in Vanguard's eyes. He had allowed himself to perpetuate any lack of self-worth these two may possess by his own short sightedness up to this point.
No further.
". . . You two have been an invaluable asset to the journey, so far. I . . . wanted to apologize, for pulling you into this without asking you, first, and then for protecting you without giving you the chance to say otherwise. That was my mistake . . . here, in this place, the company can't hear or see us, though.
"I wanted to offer you more autonomy. A form that didn't take on so many resources, and more control over yourself. To find your own style, your own place. My ally and friend, someone I believe you two can trust, if you so choose to, Mistair; she can make you into something more.
"If you wanted that."

It looked like he had everything in sorts then. In that case, all they could do now was see in which way the decision would turn. Would Armiger and Centurion be fine as they were or decide that they wanted to try taking a different step? Had they ever even considered as much before all of this? Of course not. They had given it the same amount of thought as Vanguard himself would have seeing as they were all cut from the same cloth. But as he himself stated, they were all flawed in one way or another. Even those that sought out such a lauded perfection.
"No matter how hard anyone tries, nothing is flawless after all."
She would engage Armiger to let him stand of his own accord as Centurion would. Though she had never seen Armiger personally do as much, not even in Tianna when Centurion had done the same. Well, it was harder to get him to detach from Genesis than it was for Centurion to disengage from Vanguard or Faith before this. That only made sense when the defensive armament was paired with one of the most defensively sound individuals around. But when Armiger and Centurion were brought into this, the first person she supposed they met besides Vanguard would be her, face to face with Vamin. She couldn't speak to whether or not they were willing to offer their trust to her with everything they'd gone through, but if nothing else she was as willing as they were on that front all the same.
"And if that is your choice, simply keep in mind the form you would wish to take. The rest will work itself out."
