Mistair gave a nod to Vanguard then to signal that it was fine for him to drill the path further down. She noted that Rosso hadn't taken fire on them again just yet. Was he preparing his own assault, or not doing so because of the others? And yet that didn't hold true given what took place. So what exactly was he doing right now? He wasn't coming for them directly just yet. As far as she could tell he had remained stationary still... which worried her just a bit. More than a bit given Rosso's displays to this day. But it would serve them better to dig deeper now instead of trying to outpace him here. She could think of some ways how, but each of those had higher odds of failure than success.

That was all he needed to see from her, as he dropped her down on the floor next to him. Vanguard pointed his cannon arm, the barrel rapidly spinning as his whole arm shifted to accommodate for it, at the ground. The beam was being filtered through multiple reticles and lenses, and, as Vanguard watched the beam of pure dark fire make its way through his personal modifications to the chip, he pulled up a small purple screen with his free hand.
Setting a few parameters, he limited the beam's size in order to increase its intensity in one location, no longer needing to haphazardly fire it as he did before. He didn't need to collapse the whole space on top of them, and he had a little extra time on his hands - he used the extra speed and efficiency that being linked with Mistair alloted him to quickly scan the floor beneath, and dotted reticles to triangulate the best point of data flow to puncture.
Once his parameters were set and his personal reticles were in tune, the reticle on the ground solidified and became more than just a picture in his vision; Mistair would see it, too, as the tiny laser rose up to meet the laser of his intense cannon fire, the blazes of energy and power the likes of which only he could create in such short time.
"We're gonna need to be quick about collecting everything, and be careful - we don't know if they've hijacked our work."

"If they wanted to hijack it, I can think of a few reasons as to why if what was said is true."
Nightshade had made mention of it. Rosso hadn't shown any signs of it, but that didn't exclude the possibility. She would prefer if it didn't get taken though given why she had to make such progress on it in the first place. As they were making their move, they noticed on the screen that the area was rather dark save for a warmth that was illuminating the area. And they could make it out to be what appeared to be lava in nature. And then like a spark, a small detonation triggered inside of the hole as Vanguard drilled, widening the hole just enough to aim to cause the two of them to drop through it instead. Vanguard had been able to burrow through with his force with ease, so it was something likely planned to be done in response to what he was up to. Because at the same time in the tunnel the flames that Rosso was launching before also came blazing down with much greater force than his previous attempts, leaving the option of dealing with it or dropping through the hole to avoid it altogether.

The floor beneath him shifted, and Vanguard almost immediately sensed that something was amiss. Even at the force he applied, it shouldn't have been this easy to drill through the floor, especially if they had been trying to deter them away from it.
No, he had fallen right into a trap. He looked up at Mistair as the scent of lava wafted their noses, and, then, his dark flames ignited a gas inside, causing an eruption that made their options suddenly more open.
Except, almost immediately, the smell of cinders drew his vision upward, and he saw the familiar pillar of flames. He almost didn't have time to think, but, he could at least give them some.
Reactively staunching the blaze of his cannon, Vanguard nearly immediately replenished his inert reserves and grabbed hold of Altair again, his hands setting alight and suddenly expanding around them as the force of his inner pyre became a barrier.
"I cannot hope to hold him off for long like this, but, I've given us some time to think," he said, urgency forcing him to drop their coded speech. "This is where they want us - do we want to try further, or make way elsewhere?"

The scent of lava was a telltale sign that this was either a trap or they were deeper than she knew. And while she didn't know the lay of the land here, she had doubts that the base here would be built over something like that in Netopia. So she was leaning on this being a setup. But given how quickly Rosso's attack resumed it served to say that they both knew what it was. She was trying to judge whether or not they would be able to continue to weather the onslaught or not for much longer and take their chances with the trap rather than with the zealot of flames. If they didn't go into the trap, would he become more aggressive? If so...
"I say we take their bait this time. If we can handle it, we can likely manage to get what we want and manage to get away all in one move instead of having him cut us off instead."

Vanguard nodded, tucking Mistair underneath him as he rolled forward. His hands collapsed back into shape as his barrier fell, and the full of the flames blazed upon the empty space on the floor next to the hole that they fell into.
As they fell, Vanguard quickly accessed his databanks and produced a small item out of his slotted coil, palming the circular device in his hand. "If we're going straight into an enemy trap, I plan to be prepared - this is for you. I don't trust anyone better to protect you; just be kind to him. It's his first time in the field."
Without any further explanation, Vanguard used his position to place the strange item onto Mistair's back. She'd feel it attach with a murr of energy, and the sound of rapidly cooling air particles suddenly filled the air as Mistair's body was encased in a sheet of ice. At first, it could be seen as though Vanguard had inevitably doomed her, but, the ice took shape over her form into a suit of armor that was actually quite maneuverable, and as the shape over her face solidified into a helmet, she felt the glow of a new set of eyes staring into hers, at the same time as she stared out into the world beyond them.
"Greetings, ma'am. If Mr. Vanguard has placed me on you, then it is to my understanding that you are in need of the most potent protection system Siega Corporation has developed. My battlefield position is the Armiger, and I am currently accessing your Navi Customizer and uploading my additional program data into your system. May I have your permission to proceed?"
This was a hand Vanguard had yet to play - mixing his own, personal work with the work he did with the NIA. It was a card he had wanted to keep to himself, and hopefully keep his company out of the crosshairs. What they did was delicate work, and they could scarce survive yet another onslaught from malevolent intentions. To keep it to himself, though, would be to forego using all of his resources - and he needed all the help he could give. He waited for Mistair's response, expecting her to ask some questions on the matter. Armiger was, afterall, a unique form of Navi.

Mistair glanced back up to the relentless flames that Rosso had set loose as they became more distant with their descent. But Vanguard brought her back down to his attention with what he said next, blinking once and raising one brow the next.
"First time on the field?"
To get hit and the back and frozen would be something she would expect from Nightshade and his associates, so she certainly wasn't expecting to be frozen in the sheet of ice. And yet soon after it was revealed just what was happening and the ice made sense, as she blinked a few times into the set of eyes before her. One of the Siega Corporation's own, Armiger... well, this would be quite the way to be introduced to the field, wouldn't it? Though with the name and the form he took compared to other navis, she could picture what role he had in their group.
"There's several things I'd like to ask, but it looks like we don't have the time. You may."
They could both feel it. The immense heat from below was one thing, but there was something there that they could already see as they made their descent and Vanguard came face to face with an all too familiar sight: a single eye. The Reaver's Eye on what appeared to be a massive dinosaur-like being, one that Vanguard would have seen at least once before. One that was on par with the one that had taught him personally, and one that lived inside this world of lava all too well.
Vamin, of the Four Reaverkings. The one to represent Famine itself. The massive being already well within striking range of them, it pulled back its arm and took a wide swing at them, aiming to send them careening to the floor below that had lava all about it with only a few safe landing areas. The reason behind Rosso's diminished aggression, having left it up to it as he left some time ago to deliver a nasty bite.

The sheet of ice solidified further at Mistair's request, as Armiger began expanding her own Navi Customizer with his own set of programs. Under the dense layer of protective ice, the demanding heat around them didn't seem to severe, and Mistair would feel as her own defensive measures were increased alongside the voice of Armiger in her head, making her somewhat aware of new capabilities at her disposal.
"I am a type of specialized Navi referred to as Defensive Navi Equipment. Rather than a typical navi form, I am more akin to a customizer package, and come equipped with a series of typical Navi Programs as well as my own unique parameters to provide for the most efficient means of defense available against the threat that is Darkloids.
". . . given our current situation, however, you can worry less about the specific defenses I offer against Darkloids, and more against just general defenses. Our current defensive capabilities are an extension of your personal armor settings combined with mine. So long as our combined defenses can withstand any given assault, we are both safe from general harm. I also proffer all of my resistances, affinities and immunities - for example, the lava below us is of no concern to me, and is therefore no concern to you. Secondarily . . ."
"Armiger, stop prattling the woman's head off. You're not under evaluation from the corporation right now, you're under evaluation from me; stop reading your scriptual data. This isn't a simulation, the both of us are in danger. Give her the basic run down of what she needs to worry about, and move on to doing what you do best - protect her."
The eyes glancing into hers blanched as Vanguard suddenly interrupted him. The next time Armiger spoke, it was with a little more urgency, as he began to realize just what he had been brought into. "In short, I'm additional armor alongside a set of certain defensive programs, and, if it comes to it, I'm an equippable Darksoul. I'll focus on protecting you, so you don't have to worry about that."
It was about this time that Vanguard glanced down and saw the inevitable - the glowing red eye, from down below. Even before the rest of the figure came into sight, he knew of only one being that would have that eye and find comfort in the lava they were falling into.
He cursed under his breath. "Sir Vamin! What are yo- gyah!" he suddenly paused, quickly raising a hand and bursting his full force against the moving colossus, less worried about where he was hitting and more worried about the kickback from his blaze. Carrying Mistair and Armiger with his momentum, he released additional bursts of power from various points on his body - repositioning his cannon across his form to give him direction - in order to quickly position them above one of the footholds in the pool of lava.
Looking up, Vanguard glared through the haze at the behemoth, dangerously aware that they were at a severe disadvantage within this lava pit against the monstrosity that was Vamin. The Reaverking harbinger of Famine was a familiar sight, indeed, from his time alongside the Reavers. To find him here, now, and apparently under the command of Rosso and his lackeys, concerned him.
"You could say I know him," Vanguard simply stated, knowing that Mistair and Armiger both had questions for him. He didn't have the time to explain himself, right then, and could only hope that they would continue to trust him. "Vamin!" he called up, trying to get his attention.
"Remember me? I am Var's protege, Vanguard. I haven't heard anything from Juno or any of you for months! When were these orders given, and why wasn't I informed? . . . When did you all start working with them?"
All the while, Vanguard was passively feeding information onto his visor, mostly buying himself time so that he could better communicate with Mistair and Armiger. Once he had the message prepared, he sent it, and Armiger received it first. This time, Armiger spoke in his wearer's head.
Ma'am . . . Vanguard says Vamin sustains himself from the lava. The reaverking can repair himself without worry while he has enough of it to consume.

Mistair could certainly tell that this was Armiger's first time in the field as he went into explaining his capabilities. She couldn't help but manage a small chuckle at this as Vanguard chastised him in order for him to summarize it briefly instead of giving the entire laundry list. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, they had yet to encounter any Darkloids as their enemies, leaving Armiger's full potential not yet required. But as long as he did his part, she would focus on making sure that she didn't put his efforts to waste.
"I'll do my best so you don't have to worry too much as well. With you, I can probably--uwaa?!"
It was around here that Vanguard had met Vamin's blow successfully to launch himself about in a quick burst to one of the few footholds that still remained in the area. Thanks to Vanguard's knowledge, he knew that the lava that Vamin had around him held more than the usual properties that it would ordinarily possess. Mistair did note that Vanguard was acquainted with the behemoth in question, but filed it away for later and simply nodded for now instead. In response to Vanguard's survival and ability to reply, Vamin's own booming voice quaked in the area in response to his inquiry.
"Still around, eh, Vanguard? These orders were received quite some time ago. If you weren't informed then it means these weren't your orders to receive. As Var's protege, you should know what to do, right?"
Vamin's mission wasn't any different than before. If Vanguard wanted to get past Vamin, it would be the same as always. Vamin might have represented Famine itself, but he wasn't bothered to listen to anyone who couldn't fend for themselves. If he wanted out of this situation, he would have to do so off of his own merits. And as he informed Armiger and Mistair, in this haven he wouldn't be able to simply force his way through him. But to escape, they would have to engage him either way. Mistair was thinking of ways for them to handle this as well, and dealing with all of this lava was part of the problem. While not impossible, from what she could tell it wouldn't last for long. He wouldn't be someone that Rosso would allow to take over their duties if he expected them to easily have a solution to the Reaverking. They would be using all of their resources, so she would utilize her own tools to their fullest to make certain that the now trio managed to do get out of here alive instead of melted down.

[[Note: I have approved stats for all Navis present.]]
Vanguard's eyes narrowed at Vamin as the reaverking answered his questions. He did not like the response, but, at least the monstrosity deigned to answer his question before annihilating him.
Of course, given the nature of the man who trained him, Vamin probably felt lucky of the same.
Vanguard leveled his right eye - the reaver eye - with Vamin's and then turned to face Mistair and Armiger for a moment, considering his options. He turned back to Vamin, his eyes still narrowed, and considered the weight of his words, and the words of his master.
"Naturally, the correct thing to do is fight. For whatever cause burns brightest within me, I shall fight - and woe to any who stand in my way."
He adopted a demeanor much more befitting the Navi he was while under Var's regime, his arm cannon appearing back as his targeting systems came back online. The blazing inferno from his boots died down as his systems began working more on their targeting than on his celerity, and he loaded a series of battle cards into his coils to begin charging them.
He referenced his current available resources from what he had been burning since this encounter began. The majority of his battle chips were still available, and the vast majority of his innate abilities were still processing. His main concern would be if he misjudged his need for power and Vamin ended up requiring his speed, which would leave him stuck in his power output for an extended period while his systems tried to reconstitute. He noted the blue glow around his person and glanced back at Mistair for a moment, clad in his stalwart defender, and wondered just how much longer she could keep his Darksoul ablaze amidst the chaos of a full-blown battle.
Hopefully, this was ended quickly. He put his charging rain shower on standby, and instead loaded in the first of his preferred modifier rounds. In order to get things onto a strong start, he decided to test some waters - or, more specifically, some lava.
Setting himself up between Vamin and Mistair, he lowered his cannon into the mixture of lava beneath him, the barrel of his weapon rapidly expanding into the barrel of the Volcano Chip. His chip, enhanced by his overt specialization on versatile combat, radiated with power that no one else would be able to muster within it, and he soaked up as much of the lava as his little volcano could manage before he aimed and fired his round at the monster.
Vanguard's eyes shifted back, their normal white hue flairing with the purple reticles they were known for. Instantly sprouting from his eyes and lining Vamin's body, Vanguard assessed Vamin's weak points, and dotted the monster's body with his reticles. At this point, there was no longer any hope for escape.
He aimed for the one at a juncture just beneath his jaw, at the base of the monster's neck, took aim, and unleashed a massive maelstrom of lava propelled by a large stream of darkfire, which focused through a small circle at the end of his cannon into a hair-line thin stream. Watching the massive blast condense down is the last sight that many training dummies have seen, as have many true enemies. The amount of brute force packed into such a small space would destroy nearly anything, only amplified by his ability to target strategic fluxes in enemy code.
The kind of power used to fell opponents beyond hope, and with extreme prejudice? Not quite yet. He couldn't hope for such an easy outcome against a Reaverking. What he could hope for was a testing of the parameters of his environment.

His own Armor is still applied against the attack in this case (but not his ally's). -- Armiger and Wielder inherit each other's Damage Mitigation effects. -- While Bonded, if Armiger’s bonded ally would be deleted, Armiger instead unbinds himself and sacrifices all of his Survival Methods to revive his ally at 20% Health at the end of their defensive phase. -- When Binding, Armiger's Version-Based HP Bonuses are converted to Armor at a 10:1 Ratio and his other HP Bonuses are converted at a 20:1 Ratio (Max HP is adjusted; Current HP remains unaffected) --- Armiger cannot bind with an ally if he is below 1000 Current HP (prior to binding) --- Armiger and Wielder cannot interact with other Union Abilities while Bonded ---- [Advanced]
[Mistair gains +70 Armor, Armiger gains however much armor Mistair has.]
On Mistair, Armiger finished uploading his main files and Mistair would feel the massive uptake in defensive capabilities - at least, for a Navi as low power as Armiger was. It was clear that he was a quality product, but, that he didn't have experience. He magnified her defensive qualities, sure, but, not by much.

Vamin's own reaver eye seemed to gleam a brighter red with Vanguard's reply. The answer of the one who had done quite a number of deeds as Var's protege. This demeanor was the one he was more accustomed to, and the one he would be engaging with today. As Vanguard set about leveling the playing field, Vamin knelt down in response, placing his hands into the molten terrain. And as Vanguard finished charging and let loose his attack, it found its mark dead on. And as he expected, Vamin was still standing when the smoke cleared. The terrain had remained yet unchanged too, perhaps due to the intensity of the amount? No... Vamin himself was the cause of this. As Vanguard was attacking, the field seemed to undergo rapid change, but ultimately no change at all. And then from beneath the lava did his first attack spring forth, from his knees specifically as electric rings came soaring out at Vanguard from the front as others had looped around him toward Mistair. Vamin wasn't sure of her purpose, but Vanguard's associates were also not to be undervalued. And it was here that the Reaver King's own speed was shown not to be lacking, swinging his massive arm up from the lava to come hurtling at them time and again, massive shockwaves following up each and every motion before he brought his head down, the horn-like appendage extending out to slam down and shake the foundations of the area.
-
She was focusing on keeping him ablaze at the time, so she wasn't outputting to her best just yet either. But upon seeing the electric rings incoming, she did use the same defense she had before when she was under attack as the barrier formed up around her. And it met the attacks time and time again as she started considering her next move: namely her next landing location thanks to this attack. It managed to hold up well until the shockwaves got the better of it, angling herself to be pushed back and avoid the falling head strike that was primarily aimed at Vanguard to begin with and land on another somewhat stable platform. Part of her fatigue from the previous confrontation was still setting in, but more than that was a sinking feeling that was eating at her which she could presume was Vamin's own doing. Like her insides were trying to tear her apart. Then she would have to act fast then, scanning their surroundings and taking particular interest in an area that was within Vanguard's range, but not just yet. First was setting up, then was working on the problem at hand.
:Vamin:
Defense:
Famine's Plateau The ruthless field of lava that Vamin specializes in, beyond the norm accomplished by others. Effects: Custom panels. Co-exists with other existing panels. These panels become active after Lava Panels have been activated once. While active, those in possession of the Reaver's Eye can activate it regardless of its current value. All others take 500 unavoidable damage and have -200 armor. If any opponents are immune to these effects, allied forces instead gain +1,000 Damage and +5,000 Health/Turn and all attacks are considered Aimed. Inactive outside of Lava Panels.
Lava Panels removed.
Damage Taken: 5,041.
-
Set:
Progression The speed at which the disaster trudges ahead, not slowly but surely. Effects: Can change the stage twice as many times.
Panel Master Active. Stage changed to Magnet, Metal, Lava, Magnet, Metal, and Lava.
Attrition A clash that continues as long as the strife does, until resources are lost. Effects: Opponents' skills require an additional use to be used. Opponents' avoids avoid one less attack. Opponents' recovery and armor are reduced by 20%. Opponents' attack slots and auto charges are reduced by one. For every two turns that pass, these effects are advanced by a stage. (Skills require two additional uses, avoids avoid two less attacks, recovery and armor are reduced by 40%, attack slots and auto charges reduced by two). Pierces Immunity. Passive.
Inexhaustible The inversion of scarcity, lasting without end. Effects: As long as Lava or Famine's Plateau is active, Vamin recovers to full health every turn. Passive.
Feast or Famine A wealth of unending stamina so long as the terrain favors the one who bears famine. Effects: As long as Magnet, Lava, or Famine's Plateau are active, Vamin's HP, Damage, Armor, and Regeneration are boosted by 1.5x and Attack Slots are boosted by 1 based on how often they have been active throughout the battle. If the stage is changed, it counts as 1 turn having passed for the stage. (Turn 1 = 1.5. Turn 2 = 2. Turn 3 = 2.5.) Passive.
Presently: 4x
Concluded Famine When the cycle is concluded, coming full circle and returning to its source. Effects: For each time the opponent changes the stage in a turn, Feast or Famine is slowed from progression by the number of times that they have. If they manage to change the stage 6 times, Attrition's progress is halted by one turn. Passive.
Fatigued Force Diminished force, striking against the king of shortage himself. Effects: As long as Magnet, Lava, or Famine's Plateau is active for part of the turn, all damage taken is mitigated by 90%. If the damage cannot be reduced/mitigated, it is instead reduced by 45%. Passive.
Relentless Hunger A nagging sensation that tears one apart from the inside of all who challenge famine itself. Effects: Opponents take 250 Unavoidable Damage per turn. This damage is increased by itself per time the stage has been changed in the turn.
Stage started as Lava and was changed to Normal. Stage changed six times by Vamin. Feast or Famine activates six times. Changed seven times total for Relentless Hunger.
Attack Slots: 10 Armor: 880 Regeneration: 18,000 or 38,000 HP: 500,000/500,000
Relentless Hunger: 2,000 + 500 Unavoidable Damage @ All

Vanguard.EXE
Vanguard felt the heat rapidly rising as he drained lava into his barrel, and the lava seemed to only shift in composition. Just as he suspected, the Reaverking's lava was something entirely different, and was not so easily absorbed.
He could feel the intensified heat from the growing power in waves, and as the lava licked around at his feet, he sent bursts of flames into his boosters, lifting him just above the monster's battle plateau. Risen above the flames of oppression, he somehow felt stronger. He gazed around, locking onto certain parameters, feeling the environment shift around him, and noted just how depleted his resources really were, and he did what he did best:
He learned.
The environment didn't change in response to him draining the lava. It seemed the true lava within the area was subsumed by something far more primal, and, yet, within a few seconds he saw the terrain rapidly change. He had some sort of affinity to the panels beneath him, and could change them while still keeping his own power flowing.
The monster, as Vanguard guessed, pulled power from the lava beneath him. Any harm he had done to the beast was immediately melted away within its heat, as he was without harm. The sheer magnitude of the monster's integral code - intimately mapped by Vanguard's reticles - also increased with each passing second, meaning he was getting stronger as they played in his domain. But, he also noted that it slowed down, somehow - when he consumed the lava? It was the only thing he had done, aside from strike the beast, and he doubted his attack would have accomplished anything of that sort.
And, then, was the sensation he was all too familiar with. He felt his insides burning out, his own integral code simply giving way to a gnawing hunger . . . he didn't even know he could experience hunger. Just another thing to add to the list of things he didn't know he could experience but definitely had been experienced.
Unfortunately for Vamin, his Darksoul was still alight. While his own fires burned strong, his defensive mechanism would grant him the power he needed. Vanguard's purple flame rose up against all of the monstrosity's blows, even the force of his shockwaves irrelevant to the ever-burning potency of his own zeal.
When the dust cleared and Vanguard remained standing, he stood, defiantly, his purple eyes glaring up at the reaver king. When his gaze suddenly intensified, the reticles on the monster's body responded, all collecting on a single point. Vanguard loaded in his single chip, and let the slightest smirk grace his face.
"You see, Vamin, you fight a war of attrition. A war where the weak use up their supplies in vain, and you rise to the occasion to force these supplies to be used. I applaud that. In many ways, I, too, can fight a war of attrition." He gave a pause, glaring up through the smoke as the spheres of purple malevolence dotted the ceiling of the cavern.
"But, milord, I fight a war of absolution. There isn't a single move left uncalculated, a single thought left without question, a single variable left unnoticed. Before the orders of Juno, I brought Creamland's defenses to its knees far before I attained the power I have now . . . and even you, Vamin, will fall to my calculations."
He sent his next message directly to Armiger, who relayed it to Mistair:
"Um, milady, Vanguard is about to make a very risky calculation. He requests you assist by changing the panels, if you are able."
The world suddenly went very dark. Vanguard had slotted in a chip that he usually would never use. It was too risky, too corrupting, even for his darklight power. But he needed to. It was a calculated risk.
The world beneath him seeped of the eery darkness within his own soul, as the dark flames of his body spread outward in all sides. His eyes turned darker, and his flaring darksoul flared ever stronger. Each of his chips, however . . . he saw their darkness increase, as well.
The first of the meteors fell. He did not like channeling this side of him, so long after he had abandoned it. Especially not before a comrade - Mistair - or a subordinate - Armiger. It was unnecessary. But, his old reaver eye seemed to summon that part of him to the surface. That part of him that once reveled in the destruction ordered of him, and that he still reflects in his own actions as a zealot.
The oppression of the event and the need to power up this attack for raw force prevented him from truly making this attack an inescapable inevitability. It was still possible for the monster to survive this. He hoped it wouldn't come to that.

[Mistair gains +70 Armor, Armiger gains however much armor Mistair has.]
Armiger felt the blows battering against Mistair, and could not help but slip into his own Darksoul for the force of the blows against her. He could feel the weight of his own defensive abilities, but, it could not be helped. The new face slightly recoiled as the stage shifted, the thoughts connecting Mistair and Armiger making it very clear that the collected Navi he knew as his boss would never have used this chip unless it was necessary.
He was concerned.

Vanguard's hand was shown, and Vamin's own eye gleamed in response. These were meteors, with some spawned here. That meant the rest were still coming, but not here just yet. They were still in their descent. But as the strike landed clean on Vamin, the most horrific outcome was made all too apparent. Vanguard could see all too well that Vamin's own data hadn't shifted at all. In fact, the gleam within Vamin's eye very suitably darkened, as if the malevolence within it was reflected in the very darkness that Vanguard had called forth. The zealot was facing one of the very things he hunted all too personally in one of the Reaver Kings themselves.
"...But you forgot to account for my own calculations, little protege. You said so yourself; mine is a war of attrition. And those resources are gone now. My knees stay sterner than Creamland itself."
He had deliberately held off on the opening stage. Nothing was left to chance, certainly. Against an average opponent, that is. They had all made the same assumption when Vamin was their foe, that he was not like what they were personally designed to combat. And that mentality at the beginning had already been its own undoing. Because the ancient entity hadn't been waiting to take the stage...
It had been there the entire time. Missed solely because of Vanguard's own calculated play at the start. And now there was nothing holding Vamin back from playing the exact game that Vanguard played with others; a vicious game that left one beyond hope. One that left them only in the thralls of defeat.
"Now let us see how you calculate your fall."
That being said, his offense was less now than before. The shift was felt in the terrain again, but it remained the same. Vanguard, however, felt the attrition all too well. His resources were about to be far worse for him now than they already were going to be. He waved his arms, flinging what was left of the flaming terrain that was lurking behind the darkness now at those present. A flame that on its own didn't hold a candle to the firepower Vanguard put forth. But that sort of absolution wasn't how Vamin operated from the beginning.
-
It was a risky calculation, but one that she could understood as well. It wasn't one that she was fond of, but given the benefits of the risk it would naturally be worth it against an opponent that couldn't share in its benefits. Except given that Vanguard had landed cleanly the first time, that was why they hadn't noticed. That they were fighting someone that could benefit from them. It was a risk that they had no way of expecting Vamin to be this kind of individual. Both Vamin and Vanguard's Darksoul were alight since the battle began. The rest was applying pressure so he could sap one of Vanguard's own strengths away sooner rather than later. It was a mistake to be learned from, but not one that she nor Vanguard would allow to be their undoing. At this point it would be problematic to switch given the risk to Armiger as well now. But she would take a calculated risk of her own just as well.
"Then it's time we force his hand. Trust in me here."
Armiger was concerned, as was she. But in the face of those concerns, she would take action. The risk versus rewards weren't adding up well. However, the risk was letting Vamin continue to have his way. The monster was one that worked over time. They possessed a finite amount of ways to counter what he possessed. Between the ones here they would have to do that as necessary. First came dealing with the flames, the same field as before meeting them. Without the flames at large the attacks were much less threatening in nature. Even with the field in play, they shouldn't pose a threat. That was precisely why she defended regardless. Vamin wouldn't be wasteful of his own resources. Another pair of stronger ones formed, the darkness that was surrounding them starting to feel frigid and cool. She was going with this course of action instead. A risk that she wouldn't take lightly. And her next intent was palpable at that. And she had chosen this one to show exactly how she felt that they needed to be now: cool and collected despite the pressure they were under. And that she would start her offense shortly.
"I'll make sure that this is fine. And you'll make sure that we'll be. Just do this as you always."

Vanguard.EXE
As the first of the meteors collided, Vanguard did several calculations at once. The oppressive force of Vamin. The inevitability that it implied. The darkness within its intent. The fact that him being elevated off of the ground empowered his attacks in the same way that he could aim pass a barrier of darkness to strike a Navi true. That he did not strike true, with the intent to destroy, beyond all hopes, beyond all chances.
He took that risk. He cursed himself for it as he played back those last seconds in his mind and watched that meteor strike Vamin, as somewhere in that instant, in that instant stretched across days, he knew. He knew that his mistake would cost him.
The meteors didn't kill the beast. They didn't even touch him. Within the malevolence of his own dark-seated hatred, Vamin stood strong, the aura of what he was alight with ire.
Vanguard's eye glared down at the Reaverking, his elevated stance keeping him above the oppressive waves of heat that he still radiated. He elusively weaved himself around the waves of flame that were flung at him, knowing that no move was made without effort. An attack so weak would not be without its worths.
He was a fool for not taking this to the extreme he knew it, but, he unlocked key information. Everything about Vamin was a ruse that he kept hidden, with the intent to give his opponents the appearance of victory. Now, with his own mistake made, he had learned more. It seemed Mistair picked on it, too, as he watched her making her own play.
The large barrier that now surrounded her - was there a layer within a layer? Was she making a point to protect Armiger? - protected her from the wrath of the flames. He appreciated Mistair's ability to stay calm, even as he had almost thrown all of his ideals, all of his convictions, away, with the intent to end a battle quickly. He was presented with an insurmountable wall and thought to attack it before he knew all which supported it. He skipped to the checkmate before reading the game ahead of time.
To put it bluntly, he miscalculated. He wouldn't make that mistake again.
He simply breathed. Taking a deep breath, Vanguard felt his anger melt away. He despised Darkloids with every fiber of his being. His conviction was not defined by blind rage, though. He'd be no better than them if it were. No, he was defined by his clarity of thought, and precision of action. He needn't but remember his master's training.
This would be difficult. He turned to take in Mistair, with the suit of living armor, Armiger, around her. With an ally that he had come to value, and a subordinate relying on his level head, he couldn't afford to be anything more than his best.
It wouldn't be impossible.
Vanguard loaded his next set of chips into his barrel, pointedly noting the additional dark chip he loaded in. He now had to worry about their detrimental side effects, DarkStage's power overwhelming his usual ability to stymie its power. Nonetheless, he had a plan for forcing Vamin's hand and revealing what he had in store.
Mistair appeared to be in line with what his plan was, and instantly shifted the panels. He only had a moment to capitalize, and that was all he needed. There was no possible way Vamin was relying on pure chance of the revelation of his dark soul; there had to be another answer to his level of fire power. He'd find it.
He carefully took the monster's first few blows, and then strategically applied his recovery tool and avoidance methods to appear to try and mitigate the force of the others. The draw on his resources was definitely getting to him, but, this outcome wasn't quite inevitable, yet. He was letting it appear as though he had lost far more resources than he actually had left.
Feeling his natural rise for battle press forward, his own flames growing brighter as they were beaten back, Vanguard went on the offensive. He put a lot of power into his reserves, as the next set of meteors came crashing through into the room, their size similar to small pellets as they zipped through the air, searching for their target.
He followed up the meteors by transforming his arm into a vulcan, running around on all sides to fire at the monster's armored hide, the dark code eating away at his arm as he used it. He followed up by spawning a familiar boomerang, and throwing it at the monster, each of the weapons funneled through his reticles, and thrown with the accuracy he was known for. Each bullet from the boomerang was aimed to kill, the boomerang thrown to destroy.
"You may be inevitable, but you aren't unstoppable. You'll find I, too, can drain someone's resources - I'll figure you out. You're simply another puzzle to surmount, Vamin - another piece of vermin to trap at the end of a maze."

[Defensive Navi Equipment] [Advanced] Unique to the Navis under Project Darklight is the trait that the "Navi" is actually the equipment the humanoid form appears to carry. His battlefield specialization the Armiger, he is the ultimate defense at a Navi's disposal. - Armiger begins the battle Unbonded - By sacrificing a full offensive phase, Armiger binds himself to an ally - Armiger's turn will always proceed his Wielder's -- While Bound: -- Armiger cannot be targetted separately from his Wielder except by "Ignores Armor" Attacks.
Within the protection of the woman's defense, somehow, Armiger felt safe. It was supposed to be the other way around - but, he was new, and he couldn't help his inexperience. He could only hope that he was less of a burden than an additional instance of support in the event that was otherwise dramatically stacked against them. He proffered a bit of information to Mistair, wondering if he could be of use in a new way.
Milady? I know that the usual idea is to stay away from the rampaging tyrant's attacks, but, if he unleashes one that is particularly potent, if we are struck by it, I can reflect its power back against him.

He was certain that Vanguard would've been down in the dumps after he miscalculated so heavily. But his partner over there that managed to keep her composure was having an influence on the rest of them. On top of that, her defenses would be quite vexing to penetrate in a straightforward manner. And Vanguard using the fight thus far to withstand his own assault just now was equally impressive. Then he was right.
He wasn't out of this fight just yet.
He was drained but not dry. His well wasn't empty. So long as it possessed even a drop of water, Vanguard would not yield. The size of the meteors were notable, proof that either they were condensed for the sake of the pinpoint accuracy and strength... or proof that they were just the decoys for the real calamity ahead. He brought back his arm, swiping it forth to pelt down the pellets in question. He proceeded to do the same to the vulcan fire and boomerang alike as his booming voice rang.
"Then let us see which vermin settled into their maze!"
He would grin were he capable of it. In that case, actions would yet speak louder than words. He would make this next one snuff them out in fell swoop. Not unlike what Vanguard himself said. His inaction spoke volumes given his prior movements. This would be their only shot at stopping what was about to unfold next. The inevitability that was Vamin himself.

Good. She had managed to calm the nerves of Vanguard and Armiger alike. Vamin was preparing something, more than just obvious given his lack of aggression this time. Armiger might have been on to something too. It was unlikely that the Reaver King would be prepared to have his own medicine tossed back at him. But they would have to let him get off something like that first, something neither she nor Vanguard were going to allow so easily.
"I'll keep that in mind. But before that..."
It wasn't all too notable given they had been changing climates so rapidly. From heat to darkness to cold to heat to darkness. The heat and darkness both weren't ending, but electricity sparked from her form. From her arms to her fingertips, crackling like a whip. It wasn't something that made an impressive display like Vanguard's own moves, instead a pulse that radiated out with her as the focal point, spreading out to reach Vamin himself. She would leave the field control up to Vanguard this time, the enhancements in the zealot shifting once more as he felt another surge course through him.
