For those facing a larger-scale NPC for the first time, it can be a daunting... and occasionally unfair... encounter. Twists and turns generally occur, often coming out of a left-field blind-spot. For this reason, it's best to be aware of a few potential issues that you are likely to face when you're staring down a boss.
Special Effects
It's worth noting that NPCs generally sport one or more special effects in role-play. Examples include the total inability to use any dark-karma effects in the presence of Duo, or Vile's inability to be defeated by any Navi that is not considered a "true hero". In RP-fights, these special effects will generally be stated or eluded to, so tred with care.
Stats Rules
If a battle goes to stats, note that NPCs do not have to follow normal stat-creation rules. Many large-scale NPCs are designed more as "raids", intended to be fought by multiple Navis at once. This becomes more apparent the stronger the NPC's level is.
Winning the Fight
In RP-fights, NPCs are as much a puzzle as they are a fight. In some cases it's like a normal fight against another Navi, where there will be a clear winner and a clear loser. Other times, there will be some effect eluded to or a specific win-condition, stated or non-stated. Other times, you may fight a boss multiple times in order to have more chances to figure out weaknesses and proper strategy. The most important rule when it comes to an in-story NPC fight is stay smart, as damage alone will likely not bring victory.
Strategy is key!
This is equally important in stats and RP-fights. In-stats, play it safe until you truly believe that you understand the entity that you're fighting. In story-fights, the one OPing the NPC is likely watching you fight very carefully. Smart moves, moves with well thought out tactics, and moves executed between multiple Navis are more likely to be seen as successful by your opponent. We're looking for a reason to say that you've won, so give it to us!
Backing Out
Always know that NPC fights are a commitment. In general, you will be given the chance to escape or simply not enter the battle. if you make the choice to pursue an optional fight, then you will not be allowed to escape the fight unless given approval by the person OPing the NPC. It is also possible that the NPC could lock down the area, making escape impossible.
Be sure and keep these facts in mind when you encounter an NPC. I know that at times it feels like these encounters are just "newbie crushing", our way of beating down people. However, the truth is they serve 2 very real purposes; the first is to set up specific events in-story, and the second is to give you a chance to shine. Just note that a good shine takes a lot of elbow grease!
