Merrill landed on the ground, falling to his knees. He coughed, his body slowly recovering from the last series of fights.
"Well kid, we survived."
Honestly, Death had saved them.
"Thank you. i know it was out of self preservation, but still."
"Look kid, it's not just about that. You've shown growth. And Guts, standing up to those bigger than you. And I can appreciate that a little."
"Thank you again. Both of you."
Her voice was soft and quiet. She retreated instantly, still emotionally dealing with the burn trauma. They both were surprised at her sudden behavior change.
" I'm sorry... It's my fau-"
"it was nothi-"
Both stopped mid sentence. Merrill looked up. There was a fleet of figures above them. So many that the sun faded out at points between them Merrill then noted something as they began dropping to the ground: The red eye. He had read about them in a book. Reav... Oh, what were they again?
"Reaverbots. I'll be damned. Never thought I'd see any of them again. Merrill, you need to be careful. I can take over again. Scratch that, I WILL take over again."
They both felt Life shake. She didn't peak, but the image of a large Reaverbot towering over her appeared before them. Nothing else needed to be said.
Several dropped within yards from him. Their eyes glowed red, and they targeted him. Life and Death were already in his hands.
"What the hell is going on?"
He shouted, yet the reaverbots seemed not to care. The ones that noticed him all moved in to attack, and some others began heading towards his house, and the ruins nearby. So, he fired a beam of light in the air to get the attention of as many as he could.
"HEY, YOU PIECES OF SCRAP! BRING IT ON!"
"Hey. You should try out that new technique. Use my power to restore your vitality."
Merrill sighed, realizing that the Spirit was right. He took a deep breath, his weapons beginning to glow with a crimson layer of light. He dashed forward, to the closest one, and carved through him. He felt a tiny bit of his energy return, although his body was sore and tight. He grunted, turning and striking another in the eye. He moved around carefully, in a circle. He made sure to stay within range of two or three at a time, until they closed in too much. He jumped, unfurling his wings long enough to get a burst of air beneath him, until he reached a tree. He jumped towards another tree, and another, until there was enough space to land, and fight a few more Reaverbots. He would repeat this strategy, hi body recovering slowly. Flickers of light begining to eminate off of his body, that were white, as the crimson energy of the swords decimated through the many enemies.
As Merrill began to engage them, he was rather successful for a time against them. Their overwhelming numbers slowly dwindling, it would still be easy enough to claim a victory should they keep up this pace. Except they did not keep up the same pattern. As he moved to strike again, the reaverbots slid back as the smaller ones got behind a more human sized one that put up its shield and blocked each strike instead. They had learned in a collective manner in just a short time from the continued attack. But they didn't engage him themselves, each getting back instead.
And something else crash landed instead. A fifty foot tall monstrosity. A mechanical menace somewhat resembling some sort of warped bird, one could presume. It had an elongated back that formed back into what could be considered wings more than not that contains thrusters for sudden movement. With an elongated beak and single shining red eye that was different than the eyes the Reaverbots possessed. A long tail swished back and forth behind it as it stood on two legs, the talons digging deep into the earth with the madness of the sky above and the earth around them. And the tail lashed out first, leveling the trees in the general area as a result.
Well, his strategy worked for a time. He managed to restore enough vitality to get back on hi feet and fight without feeling completely exhausted. But the reaverbots were getting smarter. They began to work as a team instead of just being like training dummies. They had him somewhat boxed in, with the shields keeping him at a short distance, until the loud crash. Merrill took to the air and landed on a branch, outside of reach of the reaverbots on the ground to stare at the large... Thing.
"Are you kidding me?"
The large Reaverbot bird had one large red eye as far as he could tell. He quickly used the trees as cover to jump, fly, and Tarzan-like his way behind the bird, trying to stay out of sight. He managed to make it behind the reaverbot, only for it to swish it's... tail? The immediate area of trees were scattered, a tree branch hitting him in the leg, knocking him off the branch he was on. He landed on the ground, flipping backwards, dodging a reaverbot that was right there by he landed.
"It will know where I am at because of all the other reaverbots. So hiding and sneak attacks aren't an option."
He jumped up, getting into the trees. He stood at the edge of the now open area the bird had created. He dashed up higher and higher, all the way to the top of a tree that was roughly as tall as the bird. He stood on a branch, facing the bird's side. He raised his hands, with Life and Death within them, to summon the rest of his arsenal: Chaos, the red and black lance, Prayer, the white and blue mace, Feast and Famine, the two green, black and brown Daggers, Tranquility, the Yellow and white Rapier, and lastly, Hope, the large two handed sword. The weapons rotated around him and he stared at the bird, waiting to see what it would do.
As Merrill kept his eye on the bird, it in turn watching him as he called forth his weapons. But rather than the tail moving its mouth did instead, opening up before a pink laser fired out straight at him. If it wouldn't hit him, it would in turn hit whatever defense he used or the tree itself if he dodged out of the way. And upon impact with the tree while it did melt away, the blast was dispersing on it and spreading out while maintaining the same level of strength, bringing raw havoc to the forest as it decimated everything on the path and then some. And while it held its ground there were small creatures for lack of a better term fettering out of it.
They weren't Reaverbots for certain. They were black and resembled some kind of bug instead. Shuffling along the ground, they dispersed away from the massive bird and instead started to move out elsewhere. What they were heading to do was anyone's guess. Whatever it was however wasn't involved in this area. The Reaverbots had started moving too. It wasn't like they were leaving the area entirely, but they were moving in a formation away from the giant machine that was acting now. Or at least, they were moving to its side rather than behind it now.
With almost no warning, the bird blasted the beam of hot energy right at him. He dived, dodging the initial blast, but the backlash from the dispersion caught him in the back, sending him into the ground near a handful of the Reaverbots. He stood up, in awe of the destruction by the creatures’ blast. He quickly got up, his healing powers kicking in, healing his burnt back.
”That’s crazy! I can’t take that full on... I’m not sure even my best defense could hold that. I’d need serious time to amass enough energy to deal with that...”
Then he noticed the creatures coming out of the bird. As a a Reaverbot attacked him, he dived to the side, snatching Chaos, and pitching the lance through the attacking Reaverbots’ eye. He pulled his weapons to him, and took a deep breath. Death’s dark energy covering several of the blades. He quickly started carving out s path towards the Bird quickly. As he did so, there was a straggler of one of the black creatures. He grabbed Feast out of the air and whipped the dagger at the creature, piecing into it’s back. He then called the blade with the creature on it back to him, and kept it hovering just out of arms reach in front of him as he maneuvered himself under the bird’s chest area. Feast, lodged itself into the groynd firmly, with the creature attached for later
”Lets see you handle this!”
Merrill used his arsenal of weaponry to keep the Reaverbots at bay. The weapons rotated around him like a barrier effect, striking at any one of them that got close. He called forth his Two handed Claymore, Hope. Hw began running white hot light energy through the edge of the blade. He skyrocketed upward, in an attempt to stab the Reaver-bird in the chest, continuing his momentum higher, running the blade through its body up to its neck and finally its mouth....
