As one of the more expensive apartments in the complex, Faith Nymphra's home seems quite larger compared to the others. She keeps it quite clean, and one can't help but notice her obsession with the color red.
Curtain color? Crimson for every last window. Countertops? Shiny and marble, but still crimson. Cabinet handles? Crimson. Shower Curtain? Towels hanging neatly in the bathroom? Bathroom mats? Linens on the bed? Rugs lying on the carpet on both sides of the front and back doors? Blades on the ceiling fan? Color of the lamp shades? Frames of the pictures hanging on the wall? Color of the furniture?
All vibrant crimson, with a light touch of maroon here and there to mix things up.
The carpet in the apartment was a light shade of gray, and one would quickly realize that gray was her second favorite color. Wall color, Refrigerator, Bathtub, Lampstands, Pillows, Cabinets, and even the vacuum cleaner sitting nonchalantly next to the kitchen garbage can: all light gray.
Walking in through the front door, you'd find yourself in the living room. The floor is tiled just where you walk in, begging you to remove your shoes before stepping on the carpet so as not to get it dirty. The carpet was so clean that putting your bare feet on it made the them feel cleaner. To the right of the entrance, the kitchen covers the entire right side of the apartment, separated from the living room only by the border of carpet and tile that extends from the front door all the way to the far wall where the refrigerator is located. A pristine countertop wraps around the wall bordering the kitchen and an island in the middle is always garnished with some form of fruit basket that welcomes you to take from it.
In the living room, a single two-person couch sits lonely in the middle of the room, facing toward the entertainment-center-mounted Television that's angled between the corner of the two walls at the left of the entrance. A hallway leading to the two bedrooms is at the corner of the living room farther from the entrance, just beyond a sliding glass door on the wall directly opposite the entrance leading to a small patio. Being on the highest floor of the building, the patio gives a nice view of the suburbs just outside the complex.
Countless well-organized pictures populate the otherwise empty walls about the living room. Most of them consisting of either Faith Nymphra or David Pele and some strangers, but if one were to scan the wall of pictures for long enough, they'd find a few of them that captured the image of a grumpy Cherish Pele or of a quirky Jacob Rayner. One of the pictures is literally just an image of Cherish's hand covering the lens of the camera, but between the fingers you'd just be able to notice the rare sight of her laughing-face that she was desperately trying to keep from being caught on camera. She looked much younger in that picture than she did in the more recent ones, and that silently spoke of how truly rare it was to see her that happy.
Down the hallway there was a door on either side, one leading to a regular bedroom and the other leading to the master bedroom. There was a third door at the end of the hall that led to the utility closet.
The first of the two bedrooms is repurposed to be an "office-slash-guest" room. A command-center's worth of computer monitors fills a desk located in the corner directly across the entrance to the room, and just next to that on the wall is a bookshelf filled to the brim with all sorts of learning material. It's noteworthy that the black office chair sitting in front of the computer desk is the only piece of furniture in the house that isn't some shade of red, but there is left little doubt in one's mind that Faith is planning to change that as soon as possible.
A humble twin sized bed inhabits the corner opposite of the computer desk, and the last wall is taken up by a closet that expands for the width of the wall. A door at the other end of the room leads to a small personal bathroom -- nothing particularly special about it, just that it's extremely clean and has the typical Sink, Toilet, and Shower layout, decorated with crimson where ever humanly possible. At no surprise to the beholder, even the handsoap next to the sink, the bottles of grooming products in the shower, and the painting of the walls in the bathroom are all Faith's signature red.
Across the hall is the master bedroom -- easily twice the size of the guest room. A door leading to a walk-in closet is on one wall, and the door to the master bathroom on another. The king-sized bed sits centered on the wall directly across from the room's entrance; its sheets appearing as if they'd been ironed flat and the pillows looking as though they'd been never used. It was truly remarkable how clean Faith was able to keep this house, and the residual aroma of her perfume emanating from the makeup table on another corner of the room added exponentially to the aura of cleanliness in the room.
There was a nightstand on each side of the king-sized bed, each one having pictures on it of the happiest moments between Faith Nymphra and David Pele. The age of their faces on the picture seemed quite young though -- the pictures had to be several years old, but there none that were more recent located anywhere in the house. Dismissing the minor observation and going into the bathroom, one would find it just as decked out as the guest bathroom, but so much larger in size that it seemed to give each feature some "breathing room" rather than being mashed together like in the other bathroom. The bath tub was totally separate from the shower; the tub being more bean shaped and having steps leading up to it, and the shower appearing more like a small cubical with a glass door.
Back to the main hallway, the last door in the house lead to the utility closet where the washing machine, drier, and storage for cleaning supplies were all housed. Despite being the least-seen room, it was just as well kept as the rest.
Something about the home made it comfortable for anyone to reside in, even guests. The clean and peaceful atmosphere made it an easy place to wind down at the end of the day, and whenever you finally decided to leave, you'd always feel refreshed and ready to seize the day again.
It wasn't a house of dreams, but it was truly a home to anyone that entered.

[Cherish Pele entering from Aqua Net] [Faith Nymphra entering from Aqua Net]
" NNNNNGGGGGHHHHH-GYYYAAAAAHHHH!!! "
While laying peacefully on the bed in the guest bedroom wearing what appeared to be a silver-headband (by which she was Pulse In to the Cyber World), Cherish Pele suddenly went into some sporadic seizure of otherworldly pain. Her chest rose up from the bed as if she'd just been electrocuted by a defibrillator, and judging by the violent sparks that were pouring off of the silver-headband she was wearing, it was highly likely that this was indeed some form of inadvertent electrocution.
Her entire body fell back to the bed after seeming to almost float up from the force of the shock. The lighting in the entire apartment went dim due to the surge of electrical power.
When she opened her eyes, her pupils looked as though they belonged to a blind person: faded and pale. She gasped for breath upon waking up, gasping like a victim that had just been waterboarded and nearly drowned. Her gasps seemed futile though as the sound of wheezing signified that she was getting very little (if any) oxygen in her lungs. Blood began gently seeping out of her eyes as if she were crying, and soon it was accompanied by the blood that she began to cough out of her mouth after her lungs realized that the desperate wheezing for air wasn't getting the job done.
" UHMPH! UUUUAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!! "
Another fierce electrical shock from the head band, but this time it was more serious than before and it wasn't dying down. No, even as the electricity through the entire complex went into a state of brown out, the shocking refused to let up and remained consistent as she screamed in agony.
It was sure to catch Xypher's attention from the other room where Jacob Rayner and Faith Nymphra had Pulse In -- the later of which was now back in her physical body and rushing to the side of the bed where Cherish was being tortured.
Her eyes sockets were bleeding profusely now, and combined with the blood rushing from every other hole in her face -- her nose, her ears, and the blood she was still coughing up -- the bathrobe she wore and the bed she was laying on was getting drenched in the crimson flow. Even the blood vessels around her sweat glands were bursting under the indescribable physical trauma she was undergoing, giving the appearance the she was literally sweating blood right now.
With what little control over her body that she had, she reached to remove the headband in dire attempt to stop the pain.
" No Cherish, you can't! "
But Faith caught her arms and held them down before she was able to.
" I know it hurts, and I'm sorry. But you can't take it off until your consciousness is fully returned. "
" GYAAAAAH-HAAAAA-HAAAAAAAA!!! "
Cherish's agonizing screams started to sound more like crying now, and for anyone that knew her even the slightest, it was a frightening thing to see her cry. This was the girl that could take a bullet and will herself into showing no expression of pain. And to actually hear her crying right now? The pain had to be unbearable.
But crying did nothing to prevent the pain from persisting. The bloodied tears continued to scream as her body's adrenaline fought as hard as it could to break free from Faith's grasp in dire attempt for survival, but Faith remorsefully held strong.
The was smoke emitting from the headband now as it literally began burning its way into Cherish's temples, causing the volume of her screams to amplify in volume as she sat there helplessly waiting for the process to finally be over.
Faith noticed the color slowly returning to Cherish's eyes, signifying the she was almost back.
" It's not much longer, Cherish, just hold on! "
But Cherish had no intent of "holding on" as her bodily instinctively drove her hands toward her head, finally overcoming Faith's restraint, and reached her fingers around the headband. But by now, the headband had nearly melted itself into her skull, so the only thing she was able to grasp was a small chunk of her hair that she violently ripped out.
Faith restrained her again before she was able to cause more damage to herself, then looked to Xypher as the scene continued to worsen.
" There's a medical kit and an AED in the closet at the end of the hallway. Go get them and bring them back here immediately! "
Cherish would be in bad shape by the end of this, no doubt. But unfortunately for her, the worst of it was still yet to come.
From the other room, the screams of the girl that he deleted would ring in Jacob Rayner's ears where the sound would be transmitted to his virtual body that was still in the Cyber World, no doubt giving him the haunting realization of the pain he was causing her right now.

Xy jumped straight out of his chair when Cherish screamed. Headphones off, he turned in the chair and was already dashing down the hallway. He threw the door open, grabbed the med kit and the AED and was halfway back to the room in a matter of seconds. As soon as he returned, he used his foot and slid/kicked his own medical bag to the side of the bed. he vaulted up, planting his body over Cherish's, he tossed the AED to Feint, and held the med kit in his teeth. He took over for Faith, and held Cherish's arms. He managed to spit out a sentence, even with the kit in his mouth.
"What ... Hell happened? this.... side effect of... pulse technoglogy?"
H noted her burns and the wounds spreading. She was going to need serious medical treatment at a hospital at this rate. Need burn medicine, and the blood ment internal damage. She needed x rays and other things. But they didn't have them here.

Faith began setting up the AED immediately, having it ready just in case things took a turn for the worst. Meanwhile, Cherish was still resisting restraint while Xypher held her down.
" What ... Hell happened? this.... side effect of... pulse technology? "
" Yes. During Pulse Transmission, her mind is plugged into the Cyber World like an electrical chord to an outlet. Her consciousness takes a physical form once inside, so in order to break the connection, everything that's sent out has to first come back -- this is what's called 'Pulsing Out'. "
The AED was set up and ready to go on demand, so Faith put it off to the side and went back to helping Xypher hold Cherish down.
" Her digital body was deleted while she was inside, which normally triggers a failsafe that lets us Pulse Out before anything happens. But in this special case, it happened so quickly that it scattered her consciousness around before the failsafe triggered. That caused the two functions to contradict each other: the failsafe forces her to wake up, but the procedure demands to have her consciousness collected and sent back into her head before that's supposed to happen. "
" When you mess all that up, you get this. Half her consciousness came back, but half was still being recovered and reconstructed when the system tried to wake her up. The half on the reconstruction side was trying to 'pull' this half away so that it could repair, while the half on this side was trying to pull back so that she could wake up. The tug of war creates an alternating current in the Pulse Transmission system, which is the electrical shock you saw, and that keeps up until one side gives into the other. Either she fights through it and wakes up on this side, or she passes out and is pulled back into the Cyber World... possibly for good. "
Almost as if on queue, Cherish suddenly stopped all activity and sat there for a moment, but then exhaled all of the air in her chest and fell flat on the bed.
" ... "
At this point, Faith wasn't sure what that meant. She checked for a pulse, just to be sure she was alive.
" ... "
The look on her face told Xypher exactly what she'd found -- or more specifically, what she didn't.
" ... You call the ambulance. I'm going to try to bring her back. Please step out -- give her some privacy. "
Faith's voice was calm and controlled, despite the brief shock she was in. She knew that panicking wouldn't save Cherish's life right now, so she had to act quickly before it was too late.
The situation was one of two things: Her consciousness was either pulled back into the Cyber World causing her physical body to die, or it was pulled back into her body, but her body gave in at the last moment due to the overwhelming physical trauma. There was no time to assume, only time to plan for the worst.
The AED pads needed to be put on bare skin -- that's why she asked Xypher to leave. It didn't require two people to be there, and she knew Cherish wouldn't want anyone seeing her in such an exposed, helpless state.
Tears welled up in Faith's eyes, but she fought them before they could fall and continued doing what needed to be done. When Xypher had left the room, she removed the bath robe and dried away the blood from where the pads needed to be applied, making sure to remove the metal band from Cherish's head before the first shock was delivered.
" I know you're in there, Cherish. I know you won the fight. "
The fight to keep her consciousness within her body, that is.
The metal band had melted to the skin around her head during all the trauma, so Faith literally had to peel the skin away to get it off. It was gruesome to watch, but it needed to be done -- the presence of metal on the body had a slight chance of disturbing the electrical current of the AED's attempt to restart the heart, so she needed to reduce every chance of failure that she could.
She could almost feel the pain of the skin being torn from Cherish's head -- like trying to tear a piece of duct tape from the roll. Faith had to fight to keep her eyes open during it; it was a sight she hated to see, but one she had to bear for her sister's life.
" Shock Advised. Stand Clear. "
With the headband removed, it was now safe to let the AED continue its work. A half-inch halo of missing skin was bleeding from Cherish's head, but it'd grow back when all was said and done. Faith had trouble taking her eyes off of it until the shock from the AED caused Cherish's body to jolt in and out of place.
" Shock Delivered. Continue CPR. "
Right. Thirty Compressions, Two Breaths. Compressions at a rate of one-hundred beats per minute, each at least two-inches deep. Breaths applied to an open airway via the head-chin-tilt technique, pinching the nose, and exhaling through the victim's mouth until their chest clearly rose. The guidelines for CPR were flowing through Faith's head right now like a river, and she wasted no time in getting to it as she planted her body over Cherish's.
" One-Two-Three-Four... "
Faith counted quietly to herself on each compression so that she kept track of what number she was on. Staring down at Cherish's lifeless body was haunting to her right now -- almost as haunting as hearing the sounds of her ribs cracking under the weight of each compression, but that was a normality during this procedure; that's how Faith knew she was compressing deep enough.
All of the confidence that Cherish always wore was totally stripped away right now. All of the toughness, all of the pride -- gone.
The only thing lying on this bed was an empty shell of a once brave girl, but to anybody that could see her now, there wasn't anything special about her. Faith had never seen fear nor sorrow on Cherish's face before, but her dead expression was like a combination of both.
She never really pictured in her mind what she thought a person would look like when they died, but for Cherish not to be wearing the stern look on her face was offsetting to that point that Faith actually missed the cruelty she'd have to put up with from her all the time!
" Twenty-Eight, Twenty-Nine, Thirty. "
Without skipping a beat, Nymphra bent over and shifted from chest compressions to rescue breaths. She pinched Cherish's nose to ensure that the exhaled air wouldn't escape through the nostrils, then tilted Cherish's head back and lowered her chin so that the airway from her mouth to her lungs was completely open, ensuring that the exhaled air would find its way to its destination uninhibited.
She knew she was supposed to put some form of physical barrier between their lips during this process, but she felt so rushed for time that she went ahead anyway and put her mouth to Cherish's for the rescue breaths. She was far more concerned with Cherish's life right now than keeping her face clean. Like blowing air into a balloon, she exhaled into Cherish's mouth, watched for her chest to rise (due to the filling of the lungs with air), let the chest fall while taking a breath, then exhaled again. The blood on Cherish's face was all over Faith's lips, chin, cheek and nose when she had finished the two breaths, but again, this was the least of her concerns.
After another set of chest compressions and rescue breaths, two minutes was up and the AED chimed in to check for a heartbeat again.
" No Heartbeat detected. Shock Advised. Stand Clear. "
" ... "
Cherish's body jolted with an electric current again as the AED tried once more to revive her.
" Shock Delivered. Continue CPR. "
" Please, Cherish! "
The tears that welled up earlier had now finally begun to fall as Faith began her third rotation of CPR. But the road ahead was a long one.
Fourth Round: No change.
Fifth Round: No Change. The AED requests to shock again.
Sixth Round: Again, no change.
It felt like an eternity, but in actuality hadn't been that long since this whole process had begun. Faith said she wouldn't quit, but her body was getting tired -- this process was surprisingly winding for the responder, and she was starting to feel light headed already due to the exertion of each compression and the loss of oxygen with each rescue breath.
She'd lost track of how many repetitions of this cycle that she had done, but for as long as she was conscious, she wouldn't quit. Before she knew it, the AED requested to check for heart rhythm again.
" ... "
" Analyzing Heart Pattern. Please Stand Clear. "
" ... "
" Analyzing Heart Pattern. Please Stand Clear. "
" ... "
Faith sunk her head in defeat.
The machine was broken.
The only think she could do now was continue with CPR, hoping that something would come of it, but by now, it was probably too late.
She'd failed Cherish. She knew not to blame herself, but when she looked back at the scene, her mind told her of everything she could have done better to not let this happen. How could she not feel guilty?
And this situation was all too familiar for her. This was the same position she was in when David Pele died -- sitting there, next to his deathbed, trying desperately to keep him with her. But she learned again today what she learned all those years ago: that you cannot fight what fate demands. This was the second Pele she'd lost. First David, and now his younger sister.
Faith covered Cherish's body with her bathrobe again so that she could let Xypher back into the room. Thinking about it now, she felt like a fool for escorting him out. He must have had far more medical experience than she did -- he probably could have saved Cherish's life, but instead, Faith sent him out on account of "Cherish's Privacy". How naive.
Before calling him back in, Faith reached for Cherish's hand, intertwined her fingers with her own, and held it to her forehead with her eyes closed, almost as if saying a prayer through their held hands.
" I'm so sorry, Cherish. "
She let the heartache and shock of the situation finally take her over as she sat there holding Cherish's hand to her face. She was such a strong woman -- David would have been so proud of her.
Faith knew that Cherish fought with everything she could to stay alive, just as David had done so many years ago and failed. Perhaps she shouldn't have expected so much out of her -- she shouldn't have expected her to be stronger than David was in this same situation.
" I'm so sorry. "
But she was.
" Heart beat detected. Continue CPR. "
" Cherish! She's alive! Xypher, come back! She's alive! "
With renewed vigor, Faith got back up and began CPR again. Before she had even finished the compressions, Cherish suddenly began coughing up blood.
" Cherish! "
Cherish tried to gasp from air, but it was interrupted by another series of coughs. She tried gasping again, but once more, the coughing would suffocate her.
" Keep coughing, Cherish, you're doing good! "
Faith tilted Cherish's body so that she was lying in a recovery position, allowing her to cough out the rest of the blood that was obstructing her from inhaling. At last, she was able to breathe in fresh air, although it sounded gurgling and rough at best.
She couldn't open her eyes -- the blood over them had dried up and sealed them shut. She was barely able to breathe, but she was alive.
Everything in Faith wanted to embrace her, but she knew she needed to give her space. She wasn't too concerned with when the ambulance would arrive or where they would even take her (since the nearest hospital had blown up and all) -- she was just so happy to see that Cherish had made it; she had fought death's grip and won.
" Xy, is there anything else we can do for her? "

Xy nodded, and moved so Faith could take over. He looked down, noting his white jacket was stained in blood from Cherish's thrashing. Oh well, he had others. No time for cosmetics. He left the room, and immediately clicked on his watch.
"Hello?"
"Yes, We need an ambulance, Millions Complexes, Building 17, Top floor, stat. There was an accident and we have a burn/turama victim!"
"i'm sorry sir, but with the explosion -"
"Cut the crap Medina. This is medical specialist X 2-4-M. I'm calling in for a Doctor."
"... Very well sir. Alpha unit inbound to your location."
"Thank you, Medina"
He sighed, and could only listen as Faith did her thing. He could faintly hear her voice as she did CPR.
With the closest hospital in shambles, he knew they would have to take Cherish to the medical unit back at the lab, or to one in a different city/country. But The team he called would be able to take better Care of Cherish than he could without being at a hospital. They had years of experience on him, and dispite his knowledge, this wasn't just some doctor visit or basic surgery. He decided to look at the other set of active tech...
He went and looked at Jake. Now he was curious to what happened, and how he faired against their foe. This was getting complicated. The technology had acquired his curiosity now. He wanted to analyze one of these devices.
He walked back to the door, when he heard Faith call him in.
He walked in the door, hiding the shock of blood on Faith. He immediately walked to his bag. He reached in, and pulled out some things: a wrispand like object, a small screen, which he placed on the bed, two pairs of gloves, and a small container of a green salve like stuff. He pulled out a needle, a thin tubing and two different bags. He set those next to Feint as well. He handed a pair of gloves to Faith, and leaned over and put the wristband on Cherish's wrist. The screen suddenly lit up with her pulse, counding the waves, beat, and the blood pressure. It also started measuring the pulses her brain made when misfiring. He put one glove on, handed the jar to Faith and spoke, already reading the numbers from the data and preparing the IV.
"Put those on and start applying this salve to her head. That should help stop and bleeding still on her scalp and deal with the burn issues. I'm going to give her an IV of Morphine for pain, and then the other liquids have vitamins and such for those who donate too much blood. The Ambulance is on its way and should be here soon."
He immediately got to work with finding a vein, and hooking up the first IV, all while monitoring her pulse and the data provided by the small screen he placed next to the bed... He was also counting down the time in his head that it would take the team of medical specialists to arrive.

Faith did everything that Xyph had told her to do, and Cherish seemed to be stabilizing. It didn't take long before their procedure was interrupted by a global message from Juno through Faith's PET.
"Pleasant morning. I would like to take this fine day, to invite all members of navi-kind to my home in Elysium, the final salvation of the living. This morning, an interloper attempted to finish myself, by destroying the servers in our great Electopian hall of knowledge, the National Combined School. In an act of hatred for navi-kind, humanity has risked its own kind in order to kill a single navi. The Netopian International Agency was behind this attack on the great independent state of Electopia. Isn't that a shame. Happily, this act of reckless disregard for human life and national sovereignty will cease to exist in a mere few hours. The Elysium servers, now safely imprisoned behind walls of flame and the impregnable fortress that is Dr. Tenma's server room, is happy to announce the termination of the Program: Earth. For those navis that choose to ascend from their earthly home, this unit invites you to Elysium, as within the next few hours, everything else on Earth will... cease to exist. For those humans who have had the unfortunate luck of living in these end days, I wish you the sincerest condolences. Best of luck in the next life."
Faith sighed to herself at the end of the message, despite the silence of fear that it demanded.
" Things always have a habit of going from bad to worse during tough times, don't they? "
Saving Cherish's life seemed futile now that it was about to just be taken away again, along with Faith's and Xyph's own for that matter.
" I ~*Cough*~ ~*Cough*~! "
Cherish seemed liked she was trying to say something, but was cut off by her body's response to cough out more blood. It wasn't as bad as before, but by the sound of the coughs it was clear that there was still some blood trapped in her lungs. She had enough strength to lift her hand to her face now, but rather than cupping them around her mouth, she went to wipe her eyes instead.
" Cherish, don't try to talk. You need to keep resting. "
" ... "
She didn't say a word, but the look in her eyes when she had finally opened them spoke loudly enough. For a moment, Faith was actually relieved to see that stubborn gaze in Cherish's eyes. It was a complete contrast to her lifeless appearance just moments before -- a sight she'd hope to never see again.
" I'll get enough rest when I'm dead. "
" Don't even kid like that, Cherish Pele! "
" I'm not. "
" We almost lost you! "
" Well in case you missed the memo: the world's kind of ending. And resting won't change that. "
Faith was quite for a moment. She knew where Cherish was going with this.
" Get me some new Pulse Tech. I've got work to do. "
" A medical team's on its way already, Cherish! "
" My body's not going anywhere -- just my consciousness. They can still work with that. "
" And what will happen if you're deleted again while Pulsed In?! "
" Then I guess I die, don't I, Faith? But what's the difference between dying with the rest of the world or dying trying to save it? "
" ... "
She seemed so non-chalant about it, as if the danger didn't even phase her.
" Now get me what I asked for. We don't have time to argue. "
" ... "
She sure was demanding for a half-dead girl. Nymphra compromised though and went to grab a new set of Pulse Transmission equipment from her closet. At the end of the day, Cherish was right: when you're back is against a wall, you have no choice but to fight back.
" I'll meet you inside, Cherish. Don't push yourself farther than you're capable than going. "
" I'll go as far as I need to go. "
Cherish had been cleaned up a bit during the whole ordeal -- some bandages to stop the bleeding from her head and most of the blood was wiped up from her body. She was actually doing pretty well for a person that had almost died two times in the past twenty four hours -- three if you count the exploding building that they'd escaped.
Her luck would run out eventually, though, and what worried Nymphra was that every time that Cherish narrowly evaded death, it made her more confident. And that was dangerous.
After Cherish has Pulsed back into the Cyber World, Faith turned to Xyph.
" I'm going to go respond to the threat as well. I can't thank you enough for all your help. What you choose to do next is up to you -- I hope we meet again. "
There was no guarantee that she'd be able to stop Juno's plan. And if she did, there was no guarantee that she'd return, either.
But there was little time for good-byes. Faith gave her farewell and went into the other room, where Jacob Rayner was, to Pulse into the Cyber World and join the scene in Elysium.
