Two things, that I might as well post here rather than in a new topic:
First, are we allowed to change the effect of the mark after we've claimed it?
Second, the only Capcom Navis that have marks are the ones that actually appeared in the Battle Network games, which aren't even close to "most" of them. It's barely even most of the ones that appeared in the classic series, never mind all the other Mega Man (plural of series) which also get Capcom Navis on this site.

1: not sure, up to raven really. Personally i'd say no because no matter what it is you can benefit from it.
2: Capcom navis that dont have marks (specifically ones from the X series for example, or the robot masters from the original that didn't show up in the BN games) can have custom marks created for them. However try to keep it with the original theme of the navi. While its true you can have no mark (by not claiming one here), you cant go "I have no mark because X, ima just take a free bonus whatevs"
The reason for this being that since this is the battle network universe, all navis with a certain level of customization (appearance is more detailed than that of a normal navi) have a mark.

@phen: 1: there are circumstances where later choices can render the mark's effect useless. Choosing Armor and getting SaitoBatch, choosing MB and getting Scuttlest card, and there are probably others I can't name off the top of my head.
2: I was referring to the last paragraph of the OP, which contradicts reality in a way that you can tell when you realize that the number of classic series games prior to BN ending is the same as the number of X games, and not all classic bosses got Navis, and that already disproves the 'most' right there.

It says most Capcom "navis" have crests -- not most Capcom Characters. Classic Megaman Bosses (as well as Bosses from the X/Zero/Legends/ZX/Starforce series) are obviously not "navis", and thus weren't being referred to in the last paragraph =D

Fake answers are fake. At any rate, the amount of relevance your second point holds is relevantly low. So we ignore.
As for changing the effect later on -- nothing says you can't, so that means you can. There's no way to break anything by it anyway, lol. (( Being stuck with the same crest effect is like being stuck with a specific number of Offensive/Defensive/Supportive/Restorative Programs Slots that cost money to change >.> ))
