Joker.EXE
The shining metropolis had not a cloud in the sky as the bright, digital sun rose over the horizon. As the network shifted from night to day, the lights that lit the city up with the radiance of the sun flickered out to give way to the real thing, and, in the blink of an eye, the night time flow of the city had been taken over by the sudden activity of day time.
Navis came out of their digital apartments, acting as little hamlets in the net that paralleled their PETs in the real world. Others came in little beams of data, from other parts of the Net, intent on coming in early to get to their place of work, or maybe to pick something up and make their rounds within the city.
A curious group of workers were already setting up an area within the city square, the construction Navis efficiently erecting a stage with a podium and a perimeter for a crowd within a matter of minutes.
It was a good thing that the people of Electopia hasn't the slightest clue who he is, or what he is, Joker lamented, as he watched his work crew. In his escape of the Animus Syndicate, he decided he could go ahead and "borrow" a large sum of Zenny. It was the remaining funds that was within his creation project, anyways; that meant that it was his Zenny, right? It didn't matter.
As soon as he was out of the Animus Syndicate, he started thinking on just how he would expand his connections. It was that train of thought that led him here, to this beautiful metropolis that his recently hired crew of low-level Navis was putting together a stage within. A stage for his first public appearance.
He stood off the side, observing the work done as any good employer would. While he ran calculations in his mind, data and numbers flying past his vision from his blue visors, he also surveyed the passerbys - the Navis either showed great interest in the happenings of the crew, or little interest at all. Some of them walked by with little screens floating beside them, humans speaking to them from the other end - others walked by in groups of other Navis. Some of the passerbys pointed and whispered to their comrades about the work crew and the event area they were building. More pointed at him, standing beside his crew and stage, his height easily scaling over the little stage they had erected for him to stand on. It was probably an amusing sight.
He is starting to get tired of just sitting around and watching, though. The work crew is working at a sub-par rate, and he was nearly certain they had already messed up on a few of his precise calculations. Besides; he could've already been done, by now.
Holding up a hand, Joker signaled for the crew to stop. Looking over the work they already had done, and comparing it to the blue prints he had provided them earlier that morning, Joker decides that the group had completed more than enough.
"Thank you for your contributions. You will find the agreed upon amounts have already been sent to your accounts; however, I can handle the construction from here."
The construction crew look at their materials nearby, still plentiful, and then look back at Joker as though they were about to question his decision. Obviously thinking better of it, the head of the crew barked off a few orders, and, in a couple of minutes, Joker's hired work crew was gone.
"Good riddance. All I needed was the foundation, anyways . . ."
Taking a few strides forward, his long legs taking him across the reserved area in just five steps, Joker turns and looks across his area of rented space. He taps a finger against his visor, and the whole area fell away from the physical plane as his vision analyzes it in little more than structural data on a three dimensional plane. He looks over the grid of information before him, measurements and analytical data such as weight capacity and the number of average Navis he could fit within his reserved space . . . and notices a small error in all of his designs.
It wasn't so much an error in his design plan as much as it was an error in someone else's execution of it. There was no way this stage's foundation would support him once he stood atop of it. Tsking, Joker isolates the stage in his field of vision and closely analyzes its structure - just as he figured, the lesser Navis couldn't even get something as simple as a foundation correct. Annoyed, he takes a few steps forward, well aware of the public eye all around him, and lays a single hand on the stage. Accessing the satellite server, he pulls up his blue prints from this morning that he had stored within it, and memorizes the data script.
Authorizing Access . . . authenticated. Download . . . completed.
He pulls a little of his access away from the satellite, never fully disconnecting from it. With such a small scale use of his abilities, he wouldn't need too much of its power . . . in fact, he wouldn't need it at all.
He focuses on the bugged information in the area around him, finding large quantities of it as his disposal; from his own core and within the network. Drawing from the Network, first, Joker pulls the data to his will, rogue little bytes of data from all over congregating around his hand. Rather than warping the area around him, Joker controls the data, and condenses it around his hand - within seconds, he had an aura of crimson around his own body to call at on a whim.
Channeling the crimson to his will, Joker spread the corrupted data over the stage. Flowing from his hand, the simple, wooden framework of the stage was suddenly consumed by a crimson glow, the wooden beams swallowed within the crystalized bugged data. Looking around from his vantage point, Joker surveys the rest of his rented space. He still has plenty left in reserve to work with.
Flexing his power a little more, he spreads the crimson glow from the stage and allows it to flow over the ground underneath him, the corrupted data sliding across the stone all the way to the very perimeter of the square - and halting at his command. Never losing his control of the otherwise uncontrollable data, Joker raises the crimson up, until the whole area around him is blocked in by the crimson data.
With the very air charged with his life essence, Joker seeks out the intimate points where crimson met normal data, and forced the crimson to his whim in order to rewrite the data paths. He felt more than saw the stage change as he wills it, and the very ground beneath his feet shifted to his whims; wood turned to metal, carpets were added to stone, signs and banners were raised, ribbon barriers erected and reinforced, large screens placed all over to display his cause. Changes to the network that were controlled and operated by corrupted data. To him, it was not a weapon to be feared, or a danger to the net around him, but a tool at his disposal. He rewrote the network area that he had rented out to his purposes . . .
Data Overwrite, Complete.
. . . and, then, he pulls the Crimson back in. The red glow that had consumed the entire square collapsed and rushed back towards him, the only signs of its presence being the changes he had made in the data around him utilizing the bugged data's power over the network around him.
The empty square was now set up like a proper event stage. The entire complex perimeter was now lined with red walls, five feet tall, which blocked in the area save to leave a space at the very front for an entrance point. Poles sporting Joker's navi crest like some sort of banner, the upside down greek letter delta, were raised on the left and right sides of the square, three on both sides. The stone pavilion had been replaced with a stone pattern of red and black, like a large-scale checker board.
At the front of it all was a large, grandiose stage, raised some eight feet off of the ground before expanding out to a similarly designed, checkerboard platform that spanned the width of the pavilion, which would give Joker a clear sight of all of his attendants and plenty of walking room.
A nine feet tall podium was set up front and center on the stage, which would reach up to his chest level once he was standing behind it. A large screen floated up behind the stage, displaying his navi mark as the logo to match a letter head to his new company's name - The Dealer Foundation. Smaller screens were set up in between the banners on the sides with the exact same display, and a little sign pointing towards the new square he had set up was erected at the front of the square.
Now standing at the base of his much larger stage, Joker steps back and looks at his work. Noticing a slight haze of red over everything in his vision, he made a note to forcefully suppress the cloud of crimson around him. No need to have something so potentially volatile floating around; besides, it probably looked a little frightening to the weaker Navis in the area. Pathetic little things.
He turns to look out at the streets beyond, which he hasn't seen since he started his rewrite, and notices the surprised looks of Navis from all around.
Let them stare, he thinks, chuckling to himself. He takes his hand off of what had been just the foundation of this massive set up just a moment ago, and takes the steps up to his stage to get behind the podium.
He had rented this space and made the necessary calls to ensure that he would be able to advertise his little start up to the whole city, and knew that similar display boards as he had set up were set up all over the city. The real focus would be at his speech, though . . . he knew that, in order to do what he wanted to do, he would have to work on two fronts. A legitimate business would do well to cover up for his less than legitimate enterprises in the dark, and it would all start here. Joker had gone through all the trouble to get out of the Animus Syndicate's grasp, and had fought tooth and nail to get out of their network in Gigamerica. Luckily for him, he is supposed to be a national secret . . . which means that the Syndicate can't call him out, publicly.
Besides. As far as the rest of the world knows, for now, he hadn't done anything wrong. Now, all he needs is to wait for the Navis to notice his advertisements and show up.

This area brought back some memories, Regis had to admit. It had been quite some time since he had been here, but it was quite obvious that the city had stayed bustling, despite all of the things that had gone on in the past. Even now... The Navi's eyes flickered around, noticing with some amusement the various apartments and citizens going about their business. It was a nice place, to be honest. But still. It felt a bit too... tame, for what he preferred. Mainly because of how content and somewhat dull it felt. The break was nice though. Not bad to try and soak in while he was here, giving a small hum as he tapped against the 'stick' on the side of his hip.
He blinked coming across a particular sight though. It wasn't often that he saw something being in the process of setting up. After all, most things had finished out by the time he strolled around. Especially not anything in the very beginning stages, it looked like. Though he was going to brush it off, and continue walking, he stayed himself, noting the lone Navi walking up and... collecting data? The height alone gave him some pause, but the key part had him even more intrigued. This caused him to raise his eyebrows in surprise, before they furrowed in slight confusion.
What is...?
He turned, staring, as the area seemingly fell to the crimson that pervaded the place, causing him to tense up as he warily watched. But it didn't seemed to be particularly malicious. Atleast, for now. But it was definitely an ability of another magnitude. Especially given what was causing the changes. But the originator of that potential concern and fear didn't seem to care, showing for all the world could be done.
The wielder of crimson data seemed to finish, and Regis couldn't help but give a small snort at it all, amused in what amounted to more of a stage setup and advertisement more than anything else, if he had to pin it down to something in particular. That degree of control and manipulation... While it wasn't the immediate outward strength that most would associate with being strong, that sort of highly developed skill was not really something to shrug off easily.
If nothing else, the tall Navi's little display had certainly made him curious enough to see what this was all about. And maybe if the other was willing, a spar? It would be interesting to see how far he could press his luck against someone like that. Especially being one that was not the usual sort of opponent for himself. As the crimson cloud was dismissed, and the area finalized into its stage appearance, Regis began to walk forward, strolling over towards the taller Navi.
"So, what in particular do you deal with, if you don't mind me asking? That 'little' show should certainly mean there are rather large aims of this Foundation."

Joker stopped mid step, turning his head to glance in the direction of the voice he heard. A precursory glance suggested a simple swordsman with a low budget on armor options; a closer look, especially at the stick at his side, made him think of a warrior who had a very specific focus. If his main worries were whatever the stick was intended for, then, the lack of useful armor would make more sense . . .
Bah. He couldn't help but analyze whomever he came across. He pulled himself out of his thoughts, ignoring the stream of data flowing over his blue visor, and, with a step, vanished from the stage and appeared in front of the small, armor-clad Navi. Kneeling so that he could get on his single visitor's level, he more closely studied his opponent. Small stature, incredibly humanoid, and simple blue undergarments. Fit for quick movement and possibly a disciplined fighting style. What purpose, though, did the stick at his side serve?
"I am starting an organization intent on giving Navis and Children alike a place to call home until they might find a new one," he answered, letting a faux warmness seep into his voice. As true as the statement was, he had darker intentions. He could honestly not care less about the adoption service. Not that this one would know about that. "The little exertion of my power from a moment ago was less for show and more for simple efficiency of the task; I am not the one for show."
That last statement, at least, wasn't false. He knew his power, and had no need to boast about it. Still, the fact that the other Navi would comment on it piqued his own interest. Either the Navi respected the power, or wanted to know how he, himself, could grasp a hold of it. If it were the latter . . . Joker would be proud to disappoint.

Regis took note of the Navi's observation, but did not really say much in response. The taller one had a clean cut, sophisticated appearance, a sharp contrast to his own looks, something that he was rather used to. He didn't mind either way, whatever the Navi gleaned was likely just the usual. He knew what he appeared like to others, after all. But he blinked, before giving a small clap at the Navi's words.
"An admirable objective. Explains the Foundation part, I suppose. Not so much the Dealer though."
Regis' tone was rather casual, marking it as a mere observation. Which it was; he couldn't really say that this was the Navi's end goal after all. As nice as it was, and he did find it a rather good sort of thing to do, it wasn't quite often that people were as altruistic. And with a name like that, it did make one wonder. But he didn't know the Navi, so for all he knew, it could be true.
"If you're one for efficiency though, I will cut to the chase. My main interest in reaching out to you was for a spar; I'm rather inclined to trying to combat those with strength to try and increase my own. While an odd request, I know, would you want to?"
He had kept his rather casual tone throughout it all. Ultimately, he wasn't quite sure the person would be interested in this small request that he had. But it didn't hurt to try, now did it? ...Or maybe it would? It remained to be seen, after all.

Joker raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued ever more. Paying a little closer attention to his analytics, he detected an increase in the Navi's battle status. While it was still a relatively weak battle status, it showed promise . . . he was curious if he could push it higher. His own craving for battle was born from his desire to destroy and make use of his gift, and see how others could be pushed to abandon their care and give into the only thing that mattered: Survival. In his eyes, the strong would survive . . . only his calm demeanor and control hid his truest intentions.
"The 'Dealer' portion of the name is an allusion to my own name, Joker; a playing card with the wild card factor, possessing unquestionable power and flexibility," he explained, pushing up from his knee to rise to his full height. "As for your request, if it would give me the opportunity to study another's fighting style, then, I will gladly test your mettle."
If he didn't survive the encounter . . . one less weakling. He stomped his foot, and the walls of the enclosure closed in, making a secure, make-shift battle arena out of the stage set up. He remained calm, simply standing, waiting . . .

Ah. That made a fair bit of sense then. He couldn't shake off the feeling of... something with Joker, but he couldn't quite pinpoint it. Well. Maybe he would get a better grasp of it once they fought. He gave a nod as the taller Navi stood, leaping backwards as the ability that intrigued him in the first place seemed to happen once again, the challenger looking around as he watched the arena rise up. That was still an interesting thing to see, having such a high degree of manipulation and control. Particular with the rather strange, and unusual look the materials that Joker crafted had. He couldn't really recall when he'd ever seen it.
"To return your courtesy then, the name is Regis."
He spun the 'stick' in hand as he pulled it from his side before halting, the higher end of it pointed towards Joker, as a blast of light erupted from it. It was followed up with a simple sweep upwards, as a slicing shockwave rushing forward to trail after the shot, before staying still. His grip was still tight onto it, Regis seeming to relax and wait. Given Joker's analytic abilities, he would be able to see that along the side of the 'stick', 4 white circles had appeared, shining dimly.

As the other moved to the ready, Joker connected to his satellite server. Authenticating access, he connected at about 10% efficiency; just enough to get what he needed. Analyzing his opponent's stature, movement, and even delving down deep into his code, Joker cross referenced the information with data held in its servers, and adapted by downloading the appropriate counter measures.
Offensively Focused Combatant, Detected. Defense Files, accessed . . . downloaded.
Joker felt crimson surge into his being. Outwardly, Segis would see a surge of data wash over his form, but, left no visible changes. What Joker felt, however, was the compacted Crimson that now resided within him: dense and heavily collected, to provide a harder shell against the other's assaults.
As the first beam flew, a small reticle locked onto the energy, and returned to Joker the attack's information. Forceful and energy formed, but, relatively weak . . . he let the first strike hit him, the blow cushioned against his hardened skin. As the second strike hit him, he didn't even stagger.
[20% Connection . . . authorized. Downloading additional files . . . Offensive Files, accessed . . . downloaded.]
Joker remained studious of the opponent, waiting for any other strikes; strikes that never came. He knew that the opponent was capable of dishing out more; which meant that he was biding his time. For what, he may never know.
It wasn't ideal for him to be using his fighting capabilities against such a weaker opponent. With his brief analytics, he had already come to the simple conclusion that, at his current power level, Regis was incapable of harming him. To finish the battle quickly would be the easiest way to handle this situation . . . but, he had agreed to a spar. If his enemy cared to learn something, perhaps he has yet to see the warrior's best efforts.
"If this is to be a learning experience . . . I would hope you would care to try your best," he prompted, putting a little bit of his real malignancy into the last part of the statement.
He raised his hand to the air, drawing a large surge of data to his palm. What he saw was bugged data, rushing in to his command; whatever Regis thought was going on, he didn't care. Condensing large quantities of it, and even pulling from the infinite reserves of his personal satellite server, Joker compacted and refined a large sphere of crimson energy just above his hand. The whole process took maybe a second.
Turning to Regis, he considered his options. On one side, he could use this extra energy for an empowered attack. On the other, he could use it to heal the small irregularities his aggressor caused to his form. Was it really even a choice? Joker crushed the sphere into his hand, allowing the compacted data to flow over his form. The small burn marks in his tunic from the bursts of energy evaporated, and, with minimal effort, Joker was back to full strength.
He maintained his connection to his server, never letting go of it, and felt it surging him with excess crimson energy. A small field, a crimson glow, floated around his form as Joker raised his foot, stomping the ground. The space in front of him rippled, and a powerful shockwave of crystalized bugged data rushed forward. Should the material touch Regis, he would feel the horrific burns and the sensation of his very being getting eaten away, as most Navis felt from bugged data of any caliber; this was just a whole lot worse. It didn't look like bugged data, and didn't appear to warp the net around it without control. He had way too much command over it, in its refined form, for it to do anything other than he desired of it.
Raising his hand, Joker stepped forward, and was suddenly in front of Regis. A sphere of crimson encasing his fist, he swung, spinning on his heel for successive strikes; once, twice, three times total, each swing carrying behind it his gigantic strength.

He watched as the data surged over Joker, lifting an eyebrow as he took virtually no damage from those two attacks. That was not too surprising though. It was about what he had expected, given the other Navi's ability to wield and manipulate data so well. Seeing the taller one's gaze on him, eyeing, Regis merely gave a small lopsided grin in return. So, data manipulation was his method of defense. Would it also be his method of-
Well. Wasn't that an ominous statement? Atleast, that last bit had a bit of maliciousness to it, the 'stick' user felt. But no matter. It looked like it was his turn to go on the defensive. Regis tilted his head to the side at the sight of the sphere of crimson data. How... interesting. So, it was likely to be his offense as well. And his support, unsurprisingly. In a longer fight, this would definitely not be to his advantage. A solid defense combined with what could be a rather potential healing capability...
His form flickered as the crimson shockwave rushed forward, seeming to pass by his body. Regis lashed out with the 'stick' at Joker's chest right as the Navi appeared before him. The black weapon continued to moved as he swung it to match the fists, a glow appearing over it as he did so. As his taller opponent's last attack swung in, Regis' free hand moved, an open palm brushing the fist to the side. He looked down, noting the slight sting to his hand after having done that. So despite the man's sophistication and politeness, his strength did match up with his size. Not bad. Well, since he closed the distance for him...
"Given that you asked, I suppose I should oblige then, hm?"
It was a casual statement, as his weapon was finally revealed; drawing from the top, in his right hand was now a sharp katana held in a reverse grip, the hilt of the sword looking entirely similar to its scabbard, giving it the appearance of a 'stick'. He stabbed it into the ground, a symbol of crossed swords appearing that was encased in a circle, before a set of spiraling lights erupted upwards, attempting to tear through the taller Navi. Following that up immediately, Regis' hand left his sword's hilt, as he held his hand right in front of Joker's chest. As the lights continued their spiral, a series of blast followed suit, centering around where the swordsman's hand as, continuing the potential damage that was being sent to the founder of the Dealer's Foundation.
Well, if his opponent was able to withstand that without any trouble, it'd be his lose. Either way, he was learning more of his own weaknesses. Now, it just come down to surviving the spar in piece...

Joker.EXE
The grazing bash of the stick against Joker's tunic was surprising at best, and still felt like a pestering insect. His ability to meet blows with his attacks and deter them meant that he was atleast a somewhat competent opponent, but, he was still finding it difficult to believe that this battle would net anything worth his database's storage.
Then, the Navi shifted, and drew a gleaming sword out of the stick in his hand. He looked at the gleaming blade, surprised but maintaining a calm demeanor; the Navi's battle status and strength capacity suddenly raised tremendously. The energy he detected the Navi building seemed amplified on the edge of the blade, much like how he utilized his Crimson to empower his own strikes. The readings on the amount of power held within the Navi seemed far to great to be held within a Navi of his caliber.
Joker's surprise only fueled his eagerness; he didn't get surprised on the battlefield, often. It simply meant that, at the very least, his opponent was a tad more interesting than he had first believed. Regis stabbed his sword down, and, as that surging energy rocked all around him, Joker allowed it to batter and bruise his form, searing agony wracking his very core, never allowing a single utterance to escape him, despite the pain. When the aurora faded, and the battering ceased, Joker was left standing, but, was far too weak to battle. Crimson smoke curling from his battered and burned body, Joker huffed, and knelt down to preserve his strength.
"Ho! Hohohoho . . . Your battle capacity was much higher than I first imagined," he praised, chuckling underneath his breath. He moves his hand from his other arm to rest it on the ground beneath him, truly worst for wares. While he could've avoided the majority of the onslaught, he hadn't the resources to avoid it all . . . the little Navi had really surprised him.
He'd gotten sloppy.
"Ha . . . it would seem you got the better of me," he huffed out, exerting his control of the surrounding area to absorb ambient crimson. He needed to reconstitute himself; he was only barely holding himself together. The stage, walls and even the checkered floor seeped away and drained inward, losing detail and falling away to the red data it started as as it all drained back into his form. When it was all said and done, he was once again left with just the wooden foundation of his stage; and he still didn't feel as though he had collected enough data to reform himself.
He knew that a small trip to the Crimson Satellite would fix that, but, he still had the little Navi in front of him to consider. That kind of power, even in a Navi of his caliber, meant strong and incredible things for his future . . . if he could direct that, and somehow pull Regis into believing he was guiding him . . .
. . . hmm. He couldn't just bring Regis along, though. While he had the means to remove him should he absolutely require it at this moment, he needed to be certain that he could handle and even eliminate Regis no matter how much in power he grew. Whether it was that he simply got sloppy this time or Regis had truly overpowered him had yet to be seen, but, he wouldn't risk bringing on a loose end that he couldn't handle. Not this early. His bold choice of healing rather than attacking was perhaps his largest blunder; a mistake he wouldn't make again, should he have the chance to test his mettle a second time.
For now, though, he pushed his reverie back, and slowly stood up. "You show great promise, Regis. I enjoyed analyzing your capabilities, and have gained quite a bit of insight. I am wont to study anything I can when given the chance, so, should you desire another spar, simply contact me.
"Until then, you may expect contact from me. I'll be on the look out for anything you might find interesting enough to test your mettle against," he proffered, wearing a fake smile. "From one analyst to another, if you would?"

Regis watched Joker with a calm, his hand falling to the top of the hilt as it still rest on the ground. Despite how it looked, he would still be able to react, should he be fast enough. But as the light faded, it seemed like that might not be necessary. In a way, that had been a bit more brutal than intended. He had expected the Navi to throw out more defenses against him. But then again, a fair number of people had the habit of underestimating him. Perhaps that's what happened here as well, given how confident the taller Navi had been earlier. But it was interesting. Despite his polite demeanor, it seemed like deep down, Joker was a bit of the same. After all, what normal person would act like they did in this sort of thing?
"This time around, that seems to be the case."
Regis merely nodded, pulling his blade out of the ground and sheathing it, allowing it to rest at his side once again. Either way, even if he had won this fight, it had been with an element of surprise and negligence from the other Navi. Even in their opening exchange, it showed that he still had a ways to go. Not quite strong enough to make every strike stick. And not quite suited for the long haul. It was a troubling thing to learn, in a way. But also one that was necessary, for the path he was treading. As another upside, it also introduced him to the strange material, and manipulations that the other Navi used.
"I wouldn't mind another spar later on down the road. And your style... I've never quite seen that level of control and manipulation before; or even the crimson material you forged earlier."
After all, next time Joker would be more prepared against him. Not so easily compliant, nor willing to let him have the advantage. Whatever reason the seemingly benevolent Navi had, it fell in line with what Regis current sought out to do.
"That sounds fine to me. I'm always keen on getting stronger and seeing more."
Regis gave a slight smile back, figuring that even if the Navi didn't contact him later down the road, it didn't hurt to have this connection for now. But still... Tilting his head to the side, the swordsman debated asking, before shrugging.
"Do you require any assistance? Though, I hope I didn't ruin your opening day with all this."
It would be poor form for him to wreck the other's venture with this after all. Especially if it hadn't quite started. He wondered if it was appropriate to have asked that, but it was more of out politeness than anything else. Joker had stood on his own. And he seemed to be the rather prideful sort; born from confidence in ability, rather than arrogance from ignorance. His offer was likely to be rejected.
